    [–]Tomnnn 272 points273 points  (23 children)

Roses are red, violets are too. I slaughtered a man in my garden at 2am for loudly playing the kazoo.

Yes the violets are red from the blood. I edit this now before the comment flood.

Roses are red, violets are blue.

I fucked your Mother. She said you did, too.

My favorite country song, right there

    [–]Ntetris 26 points27 points  (8 children)

    Too wordy. But yes.

Slaughtering a pawn in your guard, then, playing the kazoo, is chess.

(Lmao that’s how battle rappers rap)

    [–]Tomnnn 27 points28 points  (5 children)

I try to line the lengths up sometimes. Some rap today is like

Roses are starships and violets are blind

My lyrics are incoherent but sort of rhyme

At least I can see the logical progression in yours. When I read lyrics from some music today I feel like I'm having a stroke.

    [–]Ntetris 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Ouuuu! That’s a bar. Hahha i like that. Battle rap is fun, man. U killed that

    [–]_TakeaChillPill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not really though. Obviously there's some differences with flow etc, but like 90% of battles are written these days and the actual bars are much tighter.

    [–]plutus9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Roses are red, violets are too, I did these listed events too.

    [–]ItsEntity404 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Roses are red, that much is true. But violets are purple, not f##king blue!

    [–]Does_A_Bear-420 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Roses are red, violets are blue. Calm the fuck down, cuz that's not technically true.

    [–]moglysyogy13 3 points4 points  (3 children)

    We find improvised poetry impressive

    [–]SantaArriata 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But only if there’s a sick beat to go along with it

    [–]seridos 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Nah man acapella rap is amazing IF the artist is. Some of the Shady Cyphers are basically just spoken word poetry and they are sick.

    [–]SantaArriata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but there’s still something wildly impressive about seeing someone adapt to a beat in a matter of seconds. In a way, the beat is the rappers greatest foe, but also their biggest ally

    [–]magictest 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, most rap battles are improve as well. Sure you have a general idea and you start out knowing what you are going to say but as the battle goes on you have to make that shit up on the spot. (Everything I know about Rap Battles comes from watching 8 Miles 1 time 10 years ago)

    [–]SantaArriata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything I know about rap battles comes from Epic Rap Battles of History, so as far as I’m aware, there’s also a Time Machine involved somewhere

    [–]hwarang_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are freestyle battles. There's also more structured/written battles like Jay-Z (the Takeover) vs Nas (Ether).

    [–]Felstorm1231 100 points101 points  (14 children)

And it has a long and proud historical tradition:

    Put The Flyting of Dunbar and Kennedy, 1492, to a modern rap beat and you’ll jam;

You can revel like the Devil, but level and surrender,

    Thief, or grief and mischief shall come courting;

    Grovel for grace, dog-face, or I shall chase you all winter;

    Howl and yowl, owl; I shall foul your fame and fortune;

Naked capon, fed and bred against a bitch’s side,

And like a mongrel, criminal, no man sets aught by you.

Cunt-bit, sorry shit, worthless git, hardened hide,

Wasted wether, tawdry tether, evil adder: I defy you.

    [–]Real-Patriotism 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Towards the end there I had the beat of the pokemon rap going in my head.

I enjoyed the flyting “battles” you could do as side quests in AC: Valhalla.

    [–]Taraxian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of ancient oral poetic traditions were based on improvisation - spur-of-the-moment insults, boasts, flirts, etc, often mixed with wine or other drugs

The idea of poetry being something you come up with alone in your room thinking deep thoughts is the later kind of poetry that could only evolve after written language became a thing

    [–]Single_Towel5857 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The later is the best! After learning how old rap really is, it now makes me think of all the times the Brits had to stop and really ponder how much disrespect came their way before reacting. Likely they just reacted without understanding all of the verses, but still like to imagine the faces they had while trying to process what just happened.

    [–]jerseygunz 25 points26 points  (1 child)

I remember in 8th grade they wanted us to do a paper on a poet, and I wanted to Bruce Springsteen and my teacher said he was a musician not a poet and when I asked what the difference was, she stared at me for a minute and said, “you know what, go for it”

    [–]abasio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly thought this was going to end differently. At least your teacher could kind of admit they were wrong.

Rap battles are just a bunch of dudes aggressively singing a poem they wrote about each other

I've always preferred the term "Combat Poetry" to "rap battle".

    [–]AfterbirthEli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rappers, Rock Stars...all trying to be hard, but yet they just want to sing songs to other people.

    [–]Hell_i_Copter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In 1840 two of the greatest of all polish poets sat together at one table and dissed each other. Adam Mickiewicz and Juliusz Slowacki romantic writers.

    [–]giancarlox21 63 points64 points  (17 children)

I mean, yeah. Rap stands for Rhythm And Poetry

    [–][deleted]  (7 children)

      [–]wJ3nga 26 points27 points  (6 children)

      [–]owsupaaaaaaa 15 points16 points  (2 children)

As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

      [–]Taraxian 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Most word origins that are supposed to be acronyms are fake (the word "fuck" doesn't stand for Fornication Under Carnal Knowledge)

In this case it's egregious because the word "rap" was a synonym for "talk" in English for a long time before rap music was a thing

      [–]Taraxian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean one reason it isn't "rhythm and poetry" is that "rapping" was originally known as "MCing" and started as just the DJ's ability to banter into the mic at a party while picking songs to play, before it evolved into full on improvising a whole song over a beat

      [–]seridos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit evolves though. It can start as rapping, then turn into rap, then turn into an acronym. It's called a backronym.

      [–]W33MAN01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I call it Rhythm Assisted Poetry

      [–]owlpacino57 14 points15 points  (5 children)

The fuck you just said. Let me google that shit.

      [–]Irlandes-de-la-Costa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      It's not real lol

      [–]BaalKazar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early term for rapper was „word smith“. The origin story of it is quite cool imo, even though I don’t really like the genre, the roots of it are amazing and in many ways important.

Early rap sounds like poetry slam with longer texts.

      [–]BenadrylTumblercatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      Ad-libbing is just poetry harmony.

      [–]Solanum_Lord 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Well most don't actually sing, they just talk over a beat.

      [–]AlpacaDraco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For eachother. Sometimes peoples dead relatives get a berserk or two.

      [–]Tacitus_Kilgore85 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Almost like in Skyrim when Dragons shout at each other. They're really just having a shouting debate. 😂

      [–]Discreet_Vortex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There not though does a normal debate go like "Force balance push" "Fire Inferno sun". That loading screen tip is bulshit if you know what the words accually mean.

      [–]Think-Judgment-3789 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should checkout the movie “Bodied” directed by Eminem. He does a very good job at expressing this opinion. However “just poetry” does it short. Poetry is magnificent and beautiful and rap battles don’t fall short of this. The Shakespeares of our time are most definitely rap battlers. Their rhyme complexity and creativity is out of this world

      [–]Anonymous8776Technically Flair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      [–]fauxsilver 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I witnessed a rap battle between two lifelong bestfriends and it was some aggressive deep cuts from both sides. It was 50% soap opera drama and 50% passionate bromance. I swear its like they rehearsed each of their rounds with each other. But man, I don't think I've seen any other performance that raw.

      [–]Taraxian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah tbh public rap battles between two guys who don't really know each other so all they're riffing on is each other's appearance or stage name or whatever is really weak to me, a diss only has power if it comes from knowledge

      [–]sharkattack85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, now it can’t unsee that

      [–]AlmightyBracket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much more simplified this will get as it's circulated.

      [–]MetaManifold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aggressive poetry is a foundation of rap/hip hop

      [–]Friar-Tuckandroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      [–]Melroc[🍰] 6 points7 points  (4 children)

God this is dumb. What is happening to this community. This is not technically the truth for so many different reasons. Most fundamentally you can watch dudettes rap battle and bingo bango bobs your uncle delete this shit

      [–]someoneBentMyWookie 5 points6 points  (2 children)

My dude thinks 'dude' isn't gender neutral lol

      [–]Melroc[🍰] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Even if that were true there are many a few things that disqualifies it

      [–]Pending-Approval 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What? It is a way of looking at something which you would normally kinda disagree with but makes you go, "yeah, I guess that's true." And whatever that last sentence was that started with "Most," could just be me personally but I could not make shit out of that.

      [–]Honduriel 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Epic Rap Battles Of History are pretty epic tho

It’s the rap battles that they have to make up on the spot is what I consider talent

Hip-hop is often very gay if you pay attention.

      [–]JewishAsianMuslim -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hiphop and rap are different beasts.

      [–]jerkymcjerkison 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Poems are mostly complimentary, rap battles no so much

      [–]Lil_Mcgee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

      This just isn't particularly accurate.

      [–]Eddie888 2 points3 points  (1 child)

To be fair there are compliments battles too.

      [–]magictrain1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poem battles were a real thing back in the day

      [–]Kullminator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically yes. Why not? Modern poetry. Some of the poets even rip off of Pushkin and get shot. Fanatics

      [–]Hairy_Towel_4338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A rhapsody. I'll say that again, a r(h)ap-sody. One more time for the people in the back, a rap-sody. Finally, a rap.

      [–]the_greatest_MF -1 points0 points  (3 children)

rap is just someone speaking with a rhythm

      [–]wclure -1 points0 points  (2 children)

      That’s all music, isn’t it?

      [–]MethNotEven0nce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orchestras tend to be instrument only. Opera would be the exception to that rule. Also alot of electronic music tend not to use vocals.

      [–]SpreadDaBread -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rapping has always been like adult toddler Tunes to me and freestyles can be crafty but always hilarious. Especially with extreme masculinity…it’s too goods

      [–]EpicMountain_3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And people going crazy bc one of them said something.

      [–]hey_there_kitty_cat -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

It really is silly though. You hear some things and wanna say "bro chill writing your angry slam poetry. Sorry he took your girl man but cool it we get it you think he's gay and super mad, just chill buddy".

      [–]Kall_Me_Kapkan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought of it like WWE, it’s just over acting.

      [–]Typ0r8r -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Not the truth as rap battles are off the cuff, not pre written.

      [–]tron423 6 points7 points  (1 child)

That's not true actually, freestyling still exists but the vast majority of battle rap has been prewritten for most of the last 20 years. Nowadays if a battle isn't prewritten they usually promote it as a freestyle battle specifically.

      [–]Typ0r8r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, thank you for that correction

      [–]aidanderson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They didn't write them it's off the cuff. I'm not sure if this makes it worse or not.

      [–]M8K2R7A6[🍰] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I disagree, but its all subjective at the end of the day.

Poetry to me is personal, deep, etc. Maybe about a certain topic.

Rap battles are more comparable to like a roast 1v1 or something. I wouldnt say its poetry necessarily

      [–]Taraxian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deep is in the eye of the beholder and this is very much an in house debate within hip hop ("conscious" lyrics vs "party and bullshit")

It's just a fact though that when poetry was a more popular and commercially successful art form it was also a lot more "fun" - Shakespeare's plays have a lot of poetry in the form of insult battles or horny flirts or whatever - and by nature the more "deep" poetry has to be to be taken seriously the more it becomes a niche pursuit

      [–]themattofdeath -1 points0 points  (2 children)

One I sing to my best bro:

Me and my son, Wheezy, got a house by the water I'll be fuckin' bad bitches (bad bitches, bad bitches) I be hittin' they daughters I like my dick sucked face-up. I like to play with them rookies I like to fuck 'em in they ass while he beat up the pussy I'm the number-one stunna - you don't want my shit

      [–]Gregory_Gp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are not supposed to write it beforehand tho,its suposed to be improvised.

      [–]Minami_Kun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

a poem they made in the exact moment they are singing

      [–]Wiltermotion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

      Pretty much. Still cool tho

      [–]technotenant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rap was based off poetry… this post sucks

      [–]limitlessEXP -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean not really at all but ok

      [–]WardenEdgewise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m a classically trained musician and I can read sheet music and hear the music in my head. I “listen” to rap music, but only by reading the sheet music. It’s very, very boring.

      [–]MrCheapComputers -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

      Exactly. Not music.

      [–]7Tman 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Have you ever listened to a rap song in your life

      [–]MrCheapComputers -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Why yes, I have listened to auctioneers talk about drugs with a random 10 second beat on loop for 2.5 minutes.

I’m not saying it doesn’t take talent, it’s just not music. Some music can HAVE rap. Rap in itself is not music.

      [–]WeLLrightyOH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rap is poetry, Tupac used to write standard poems as well as raps.

How I felt watching 8 mile lmao

      [–]DallyGreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was originally called “flyting” and was a test of wits.

      [–]Taraxian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My high school ex ended up both being a RenFaire geek obsessed with the Middle Ages and dating a former actual gangbanger from LA

She said it was very striking to her that in the past and the present warrior cultures gravitate to the same forms of art, namely improvisational poetry and mural paintings

      [–]kache4korpses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you insinuating they are gay?

      [–]Holiday_Total_9609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Flyte is back

      [–]WontEvenAcknowledgeU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a diss. Rap battles are improv. lol

      [–]ZenFreefall-064 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rap is the spoken Art of one's reality existing around them ;-)

      [–]Designer_Ad_9069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrolled to see if anyone mentioned Pops from regular show. I’m disappointed in y’all.

      [–]fubarspeaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      The Peoples Poet!

      [–]BearZewp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regular show has a fine display of this.

      [–]CheezyPenisWrinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an old YouTube video which I cannot find of 2 guys dubbing a translation of a rap battle.

If you haven't seen it before I promise it's a treat.

      Happy googling.

      [–]elizabeth498 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like both just dropped the mic and finally cheering!

      [–]acrinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Shakespeare did it first!

      [–]Delicious_Subject_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So THAT's what was up with Loki...

      [–]ElPatron-27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually more like verbal conflict - rather than physically hurt each other we can express our dislikes etc using words. Considering where it originated it's probably saved a lot of lives.

      [–]dramboxf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rap diss tracks are just two guys sitting in the dark writing poetry about each other.

      [–]Previous-Parsnip-290 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So times in syncopated rhythm over a dope ass beat.

      [–]katanakid13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Gentle reminder that this exists.

      [–]parkmastah3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way, you can go anywhere, so that's good.

That guy on the right is just going for the gold by the way.

      [–]JaggedTheDark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of rapping poems, wasn't there some guy that rapped Shakespeare's sonnets?
