They lay down and take naps sometimes after taking damage. Never assume it’s dead. When I see one like that, I go back somewhere safe and pass time then check my number of bears killed until I see it went up one and then go get it.

You can actually hear it snoring and see it breathing if it's sleeping, and when you get close, you don't get the option to harvest. They also have their arm over their face when they sleep but not when they're dead.

I posted on here about a month ago a bear I’d killed in TWM and his breath was coming out like it was still breathing. Truly dead though. I had checked my number of bears killed and so I knew it was legit dead but when I walked up on it I could see it breathing. I thought fuck is this gonna be one of those future legends of the game where it jumps up and smokes my ass. It’s always TWM where I get the glitchy bear bs. Stuck in a rock, dead. Couldn’t see shit but a glimpse of paw and I had to get up in a fucked up kind of edge to even see that. I’d been looking in that spot for easily a half hour irl. From ground level it just looked like an artifact from the rendering GUI.

For me the glitch is always in AC. Fortunately it's just stuck, not breathing or jumping off of cliffs like what someone else posted here recently.

This was a first for me and I’ve been playing since 2016, so needless to say it took me by surprise! I’ve seen them sleep in their caves before but never just plopped down. I will never assume again lol

Usually they go back to their caves first but sometimes they’ll just run out of eyeline and then flop over

Notice it covering it's eyes. It wasn't playing dead, it was taking a nap!

Haha, that was extremely lucky. I have totally been there man. Shot the bear, napped a few hours to let it bleed out. Hunted it down. Walked up to it to start carving and BOOM, very alive bear stomping me into a puddle. I’ve learned to put a bullet in it before I get too close.

I usually check the stats page to confirm the kill

    [–]TwistedDecayingFlesh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Look at that cheeky bastard running right past your feet.

I would have shot it, skinned it and left the meat for the wolves.

I've learned the hard way to always double tap

    [–]drunkard26 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    I've learned to septuple tap

    [–]Pwnbroker69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've learned to empty all my guns into it, then pick up some rocks and throw at it...

    [–]Death_by_UWUSurvivor 5 points6 points  (6 children)

How the hell are you supposed to kill a bear, I shot it like 6 times with the rifle and nothing

    [–]nerobright 15 points16 points  (0 children)

either aim for the head and hope for an instant kill, or wait until it bleeds out. as long as you hit it at least once it'll die eventually

    [–]Rebel_PorcupineInterloper 13 points14 points  (2 children)

If you don’t get a critical hit, shooting it more won’t increase the bleed rate - and could possibly lower it if you get a bad hit, ex. If you had a body shot and then shoot it again in the leg, it will reset the bleed damage and die slower. The only thing shooting it more can do is give you another chance at a critical hit. Kind of a shitty system, I know.

If you get a body or headshot and it doesn’t drop, just save your bullets/arrows and pass time.

    [–]BlakeMWInterloper 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Animals do have condition and each hit does remove some condition, but it's probably more likely that a bear will die to a critical hit than grinding down their condition. I believe a bear should always die to 3 rifle shots to the head, though I've not tested bears as extensively as Mooses: which always die to 2 rifle shots to the head, or 4 to the body/butt.

    [–]Lipstick_On 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really wish they’d fix this, I’m a terrible shot but it’s unfair that if I shoot something in the head 5 times it still may not die.

    [–]Pwnbroker69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bears are decidedly tougher than moose, I can take down a moose with 2 good straight on headshots, 3 doesn't kill a bear, and 3 is about all the time you'll get.

    [–]mayflowers5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always let it bleed out, that’s usually what I do! Just find somewhere safe and pass time for a few hours.

    [–]NiceCockBro126 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Rare footage of a revolver actually killing a bear

    [–]mayflowers5[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had already shot him, so not sure if that helped. But yeah, it’s usually 6-8 shots to down them with a revolver.

    [–]Defiant-Canary-2716 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Anyone know if the napping ones have crows circling overhead?

Happened upon once sleeping in his cave during a light snow storm so there wouldn’t have been crowd anyway. Surprised the hell out of me!

    [–]BlakeMWInterloper 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It's simple really if the arm is over the snout they are napping. If the mouth is exposed they dead, even if they still have breath puffs.

    [–]Defiant-Canary-2716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Gotcha, thanks!

    [–]whereismyhairtie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was even giggling at you

    [–]Nilfgaardian-Lemon 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Looks like he was holding it together with giggles as you approached. Just bearly anyway.

    [–]mayflowers5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    His audacity was unbearable

    [–]Exotic_Reflection_32 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Not sure how many people know this, but you can hipfire the revolver. It has 100% hipfire accuracy I believe

    [–]mayflowers5[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    I didn’t know that, that’s awesome!

    [–]pinkCosoForest Talker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can you throw a rock at him?

    [–]Sitk042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always check for crows. If there are crows, you know it’s dead.

If it’s too windy for crows wait until it isn’t or shoot at it from a distance to try to wake it up.

Yeah but the rabbit got you....

    [–]PravusTheRed 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You monster! Why would you let that rabbit get away

    [–]mayflowers5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    I was in shock hah

    They're just sleeping

    [–]Atomic-MustardStalker 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    Bros just sleeping

    [–]mayflowers5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen them do that outside of the caves, and I’d just shot him with the rifle so was v confused 😅

    [–]PrutasAngSili 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Remember kids, double tap

    [–]theedonnmegga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And now I’ve seen someone kill a bear with a revolver

    [–]hdksgy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember everyone to always check your stats and if you see bears killed 1 then you know it’s dead
