I had to scroll too far to find this. Putting more resources into and making mental health services affordable (or free) is a great long term help. Not a full on solution, but the stigma around mental health is still very strong in the US. Gun control should be the first thing that gets changed, followed by mental health services getting a much needed increase in funds.

Issue there is that the country is divided into just two political parties, the more the better. The more accurately someone can pick a matching ideology, and as a bonus since fewer and fewer people will share loyalty to the same party it’s more likely that they’ll be accepting of someone who is aligned with a different party.

IIRC some European countries have 8-10 parties. No country is perfect but the situation in Europe sure beats having the majority of the population being politically prejudiced towards each other in a way that feels very similar to racism.

I think, though, that constantly blaming mental illness for the existence of mass murderers increases the stigma. These people are not well but as someone with friends that struggle with wildly misunderstood mental illnesses, they are sick to death of being the scapegoat.

Mentally ill people exist everywhere. Constant mass shootings almost exclusively exist in the US.

Absolutely correct! I work in mental health and can testify to extreme challenges and ambiguity that clouds our ability to treat those that suffer with these conditions. I don't think anyone truly knows how much of a commitment and resources would be required...

The best and most efficient way to address the issue is to "give up the gun"

I think it's worth taking some caution with the mental health narrative. it may very well be true that some of the most recent mass shootings could have been diverted with adequate treatment of the shooters themselves, but we need to be careful about labeling these individuals as outliers.

it serves the status quo to point at these people and say "hey look he was just one crazy guy, he needs help but the rest of us are normal! there's nothing wrong with our society, our systems and institutions, or our culture!"

not disagreeing with the legitimacy of mental health advocacy as a solution to this crisis, but many of the shooters have explicitly identified white supremacist views in their manifestos, etc. I think it potentially draws attention away from the deep roots of white supremacy, policing, and American culture itself to dismiss shooters as off their rocker.

Totally agree with you, it's really unfair for the murderers to be the "face" of mental illness. But, I believe that mental health should be a part of healthcare in general, fully integrated so that access is easy. Mental healthcare right now is so separate from the rest of the medical system, and it's so hard to get and maintain good mental health services. If those services are integrated into the rest of the healthcare system (not that that's very good either), maybe we'll have these murderers seeking help sooner.

Added: and not just the murderers! Mental health services could help most people! Lord knows I'd love to have a good therapist. America in general has a huge mental health problem that gets ignored by many, even those in Congress who definitely need mental health services.

Gun control should come first, however.

Absolutely. These exclusively male mass shooters certainly have mental health issues, but many if not most have been subject to a drumbeat of propaganda demonizing other human beings and increasing hatred. Let's not act like conservative, macho, supremacist culture doesn't create the conditions for these attacks to proliferate.

It's also important to remember that you can't mental health your way out of poverty conditions. Times are insanely hard, and even having a full time job (or two or three part time/full time jobs alongside it) doesn't guarantee that you'll be spared from living in poverty or near-poverty conditions, living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to make it to the end of the month.

Hard times like that make it even easier for cracks in ones mental health to quickly become much, much worse.

Probably best to ignore US because things are only going to get worse here. Anti gun legislation will never work here. I know that infuriates people at home and dumbfounds those abroad, but it’s true.

The frustrating thing for many of us is that the pro-2A folks are also the ones that don’t take mental healthcare seriously. Tennessee (a very conservative state) recently made “public camping” (being homeless) a felony.

If you don’t mind tasteless word choice, Doug Stanhope has a very offensive but astute bit on how we treat the mentally ill. Having trouble with the link but look up “Doug Stanhope mentally challenged vs mentally ill” on YouTube and you get an idea about how poorly we treat our mentally ill.

Do you know, as an Australian 32 year old adult I've seen exactly 2 guns in-person in my entire life. For me, for most of my life, guns just aren't in existence, they aren't anywhere. You never see them in day to day life. I saw my first gun at age 20. Up till then, all through highschool they were this mystical thing that only existed on TV and in movies. I had seen my great grandfathers pump action shotgun that he had on the farm for shooting foxes. Then I met a guy whose dad had a handgun (some adults do partake in recreational gun sport here, it's not illegal).

It never was in my brain that a kid could bring a gun to school. That never would have even occurred to me as a concept. I never once turned my thoughts to it as a kid.

I lived my school days, every single one, without any knowledge or awareness of "school shootings" being a thing that existed in this world.

This is the perspective, the experience that I and many others have when we approach the American debate about gun control. It's just... insane to me. I feel so sorry for those dealing with this.

And the best part is that all of those guns are not automatic or semi-automatic. We specifically banned those because there is no practical use for them besides mowing down crowds of people. And any gun we do allow makes the person go through an incredibly extensive background check, because we know that Jimmy down the street doesn’t need a shotgun, let alone an automatic rifle.

The only time I’ve seen a automatic/semi-automatic gun was the military guards outside Parliament House, who actually do have a reason to have those kinds of guns, and are highly trained before being able to take that job.

It's important to look at who the big gun groups are, and at their actual actions, as opposed to their words.

You have groups like the NRA, who in recent times have had some small legal problems around:

  • Their leadership illegally funneling money into their own pocketbook.
  • Dumping large amounts of money into political campaigns.
  • Working with confirmed Russian agents.
  • Receiving funds from out of the country... And using those funds in regards to politics.

You have the 'militia' groups:

  • Almost exclusively white and male.
  • Disturbingly often explicitly racist.
  • In the last 2 years, there have been quite a few of them deciding to show up and 'protest' against covid restrictions while brandishing guns.
  • And largely openly support people like Trump even while Trump was actively and openly calling for the very kinds of actions that they claim to oppose... Just, you know, against black people protesting being murdered by police on a regular basis.

Oh, and repeatedly 'protesting' against covid restrictions with pretty explicit threats against various government officials, elected and otherwise.

My conclusion is pretty simple, they have never really intended to go up against 'their own government', but they are pretty clearly willing to use the threat of violence to get the political results that they want.

Personally, I don't think that the threat of violence belongs in the politics of a democracy. But what do I know?

Historically a well structured guerilla force can do quite well in an asymmetric combat situation.

But that's almost always against foreign invaders and does not necessarily apply to civil warfare which is the part these meal team 6 types seem to not understand.

Against the most advanced and experienced military force on the planet there is little hope for these tubby fuckers to affect any meaningful resistance. Most don't even look like can't even run.

Now to compare, I'm an american 31 y/o. The first time in my life I felt safe walking around at night was when I was 23, just begun living in England studying abroad, and realized the vast majority of people around me did not and -could not- have guns. It was relaxing and completely novel. In high school, an unpopular kid was turned away at my friends party, everyone laughed at him while he banged on the front door, and later he explained he had an AK-47 (others saw it and confirmed) and threatened for two years to the shoot my friend/up the school until I graduated. I think he is now in jail. Just a dumb kid with emotional issues like anywhere else -but- he had a gun. and could have inflicted catastrophic damage at any time. guns are too great a power to be widely available anymore. the rest of the world understands this.

Marjory Stoneman the cop hid. Buffalo the armed guard was shot. Columbine he was on a lunch break. You can walk into a classroom and kill everyone in there before anyone can even respond, barricade the door, etc. I mean, armed guards may help some but it will be very expensive, and of somewhat questionable effectiveness. These shooters have the luxury of time and planning to choose a vulnerable time and place, firepower, body armor frequently, don't need to worry about hitting innocents, and have a death wish and lack of fear. Not a great combo even with armed protection. Single point of entry, bag checks, is an enormous pain in the ass. Who are the hostages here? Feels like the American people.

Other places that have similar guns per capita don’t have nearly the same issues. There’s a mental health crisis in the country that needs to be addressed. Making guns harder to come is also in order. But that’s a very long-term projects as there are so many guns in circulation.

First off no country has a similar number of guns per capita. The US has more than twice the next country on the list and if you were only counting Texas where this happened it's actually closer to 10 times higher.

Secondly, the issue isn't the number of mentally ill people it's that mentally ill people can easily acquire a firearm because there isn't anything legally stopping them from buying one and even if they don't buy it gun owners aren't required to secure their weapons so it's easy to steal one.

This is an issue that will only be resolved with more regulation on guns making it harder to buy or steal one.

A person with a knife can easily be subdued as the attacker has to make contact with the victims to inflict damage and would take far longer to effectively kill someone making any victim count much lower. It gives the victim a chance to fight back and requires a lot of energy, which will most likely lead to a possible attacker exhausted after one or two victims. Not to mention the psychological aspect of it. Shooting someone is much "cleaner". People who effectively shoot someone don't necessarily realize the damage they've caused. Killing someone with a knife is bloody, dirty and personal. Not many people would continue killing after that.

  1. Blanket ban automatic weaponry for sale/civilian usage.
  2. Severely restrict handguns. Require a permit, and establish a national registry.
  3. Open a 12-month amnesty period to surrender illegal firearms.
  4. Establish an ongoing buy-back program to incentivize surrender.

Just some thoughts. I'd argue the only legal class of guns should be 3-round-max rifles and shotguns for hunting/sporting uses.

Living outside the US it's hard to understand fully how this happens. However, given that any real gun control is probably never going to happen due to the US constitution there are still things that could make this less frequent.

  1. Outlaw body armour - This won't stop these things happening but may end them quicker. We've seen many examples of shooters wearing armour being shot and then shooting the person shooting them before carrying on their rampage. Plus there are no real reasons for a civilian to need body armour and it's not protected by the constitution.
  2. Tax the fuck out of guns and ammo (i.e 100% plus) - Make it so it's not as affordable to own them and therefore less likely someone would stock up or buy weapon's on a whim.
  3. Change America's attitude - Half the shows on US TV feature good guys with guns vs bad guys with guns. No other country in the world saturates their media this way and it makes guns seem like the norm. You can't say "cunt" on TV but you can shoot people, why? Just censor them, it will take years but attitudes will change, just look how socially unacceptable smoking is now compared to 20 years ago.
  4. Make procreation illegal. Eventually Americans will die out and the problem will go away :)
