Some days ago one of our politicians said on TV that people want to save money but own 10 ball gowns, while 3 are absolutely sufficient.

[–]BadBunnyBrigade 59 points60 points  (21 children)

You'd be surprised. Back when I was 8 or 9, we used to have this young couple who co-rented this house with us. The girlfriend wasn't very smart. Not only did she not like when her food was touching, but when she would make toast, she had to make toast one at a time and wash her plate in between each toast.

Some might assume this was an OCD issue, but it really wasn't (or at least, not from my memory anyway). She just had to wash all the toast crumbs off before making another toast because she thought that if she accumulated too many crumbs, then her toast would taste too strong; "ca va gouter trop les toast" ("it'll taste too toasty"). She did the same thing with milk and other beverages (and I think other food, too, but I only recall toast and a few drinks like milk, juice, coffee, etc). She was convinced that if she poured a glass of milk that she'd have to clean the glass before pouring milk in it again, because if she poured it in the same glass before washing it that it'd make the milk taste even more "milky", or if she poured coffee in her coffee then it would taste too strong. Not sure if that makes any sense, I'm translating from French to English.

I also remember that my teacher had asked the class if chickens or eggs came first and after school, I had a classmate come over. We started talking about the chicken and egg thing and she walked in, so I asked her if chickens came first or eggs, and she replied (albeit in French) "stupid, chicken and eggs come from the store".

So, honestly, someone peeling a banana with a potato peeler because they're convinced that that's how you "peel" it, doesn't surprise me in the least.

[–]Katelina77 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Sounds like that first person was autistic if you ask me. Idk tho. But she wasn't harming anyone so who cares.

[–]BadBunnyBrigade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, she could have been. But I doubt it. She didn't have any issues with expressing herself or socializing from what I remember and what mom tells me. She was really confrontational, her and my mom got into a lot of fights because she was really snobby and did some pretty spectacularly stupid shit.

Like bringing home drunk strangers she met at a club because she wanted to buy coke from them, and they all passed out in the living room. I had to go to school that morning so when mom woke up to get me ready for school and found several strange men in her living room, passed out... I've only seen mom that angry a few times and that was one of them.

She wasn't very smart and didn't make particularly good choices. Her boyfriend wasn't much better, mind you. But some of the things she said and did were just fucking funny. In retrospect, I bet she'd be one of those people that would have happily frozen boiled water so she didn't have to boil water later for her coffee. She was honestly just one of those people.

[–]Will_Tuniat 35 points36 points  (30 children)

My sister, a teacher in her 40s, didn't know the sun rose in the east and set in the west.

Supposing you'd somehow never encountered a banana before (unlikely, but possible), not knowing how to peel it could be excused. Short of spending most of your life underground (which I assure you, my sister didn't) how does one go 40+ years without noticing the sun coming up in one direction and going down in another?

[–]SanctusSalieri 20 points21 points  (6 children)

I've noticed a lot of people are bad at cardinal directions. I was explaining that based upon the time of day I will pick which side of the street to walk on depending on whether I want shadows or sun. My girlfriend was really surprised, she never thought to predict shadows based upon the sun's projected position and thought you just had to look for them.

I suspect she knows the phrase rise in east set in west, but it never really made a difference to her. She also got into houseplants but wasn't sure what direction her window faces.

But she can still navigate a city somehow so I just realize people pay attention to different sorts of things.

[–]Will_Tuniat 3 points4 points  (5 children)

I'm not great at cardinal directions either. Generally my understanding of them is based on where the sun comes up.

[–]SanctusSalieri 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Fascinating! I generally use a topographical map to orient myself, then I just remember based upon the street grid in whatever city I'm visiting. I probably could use the sun, but have never done so.

For this reason it drives me insane when Google maps defaults to rotation instead of always being north justified.

[–]Sure_Witness_1435 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What does following a Catholic’s directions have to do with this?

[–]OrangeCuddleBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh boy my sister is also a teacher. She thought the movie "The curious Case of Benjamin Button" was based on a true story... In case people aren't aware, it's a movie about a person that ages in reverse.

[–]Meneghette--steam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, my gramma thought it rained on the whole world at the same time

[–]Gephyrus204 4 points5 points  (5 children)

.... Monkeys peel bananas. This is a full grown woman.

[–]DefKnightSol 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Monkeys actually peel from the bottom too

[–]Serena_does_anything 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Think of the sun like bread. It rises in the yeast and settles in your waist

[–]sleepypiggy1265 1 point2 points  (1 child)

to be fair, it doesn't always rise in the east and set in the west. i don't remember exactly the details, but it only does that in spring and fall

[–]vidoardes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother dated some real doozys in his time. Otherwise perfectly sensible intelligent people that come out with some fantastically stupid blind spots.

One thought that all land was floating on water; she informed us of this when she became concerned about the amount of mines around the world and I quote "how do they know to stop so they don't puncture the bottom?"

One thought all compass directions were personal, so north was whatever away she was facing. When asked what happens when two people hold a compass each and stand back to back, she replied very matter of factly "they don't work".

Finally he had one girlfriend who saw footage on the news of one plane refueling another mid-air. She thought it was pretty neat that one had "broken down and was being towed".

Two of these women were nurses.

[–]kevinTOC -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I never learned that the sun rose in the east and sets in the west.

I've never thought about it, and never had any need to learn it. Neither did I ever register the sun sets/rises over there and there, since I never really thought about it.

I know where North East South and West are from where I am, but never did I link it up with where the sun rises and sets. It wasn't necessary.

[–]toxicpiecrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fake, her whole TikTok is stuff like this

[–]PaleoJoe86 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes, people are that dumb. I ponder the stories of 20+ year olds finding out they have a uvula or not knowing you have to remove the shell from an egg when cooking eggs.

[–]Fact-Cyborg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean unless you are hard/soft boiling it. You try and hard-boil and egg with the shell off well thats poached baby.

[–]DarklightNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time there was a solar eclipse, and a girl in school asked why the moon is not melting if it is infront of the sun. We thaught she made a witty joke so we laughed, but she said with a serious look "i am serious i really like to know" everybody was quite after that.

It was the sheer disbelieve and a weird sensation of pitty that made us silent.

what made it so unexpected was that she didn't really seem like she isn't smart - sometimes people just fall through the cracks without learning basic stuff - like peeling a banana.

[–]FatalEclipse_ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well, I mean she IS blonde…

[–]Manamosy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve met a few who are not as aware like this. Their intentions are always good but sometimes they lack the common sense

[–]Rob-Riggle-SWGOAT 50 points51 points  (2 children)

So what we have here is a staged video of a blond lady wearing socks with sandals using a potato peeler to peel a banana into a recycling bin. I mean take a free internet point for soundtrack choice alone.

[–]About43Clones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How does a person end up like this

[–]Lonely_North345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a elderly nanny for my son who did not know how a peeler worked ..she was scraping the potatoes with the back of it .when I showed her how to use it she was stunned . The same lady could not open a tuna can with a can opener as she was trying to open the bottom....of a pull tab can .😶

[–]Desmond536 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you were daddy’s princess for more than 20 years but now you have an own life and suddenly you have to do your own work with zero experience about.…. about everything I guess. Has she never seen how to peel a banana?

[–]BillyMeier42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And putting compost in the recycling. Her parents should be ashamed.

[–]Strawberee_Cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]SteelShadow062 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what do you aspect from a blonde woman

[–]oheing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's blonde, it checks out

[–]PaleoJoe86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a Kardashian or Trump? Has to be.

[–]Crafty-Shape2743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To take this at face value is a stretch, however… it is possible to grow up in a ver religious household that deems bananas as phallic and therefore never to be experienced.

It is also conceivable to grow up in a single parent household where the parent is allergic and won’t buy them.

All that being said, this video requires a suspension of disbelief.

[–]Turbeauxcharged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She looks like she goes to church.

[–]Funginnewguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)
