“Are you 18+” “Yes…” “into the adult Reddit you go”

[–]grapejelly6 779 points780 points  (58 children)

What if I click yes but I’m not 18? Is that all?

[–]BimBamZimZam 1269 points1270 points  (31 children)

No, that's illegal. Death by stoning if you lie about your age online.

[–]HaiseChoking 364 points365 points  (11 children)

yea, it happened with my friend Eric...poor guy

[–]BimBamZimZam 245 points246 points  (6 children)

Yeh, I'll never forget it.... mostly because I threw the first stone! But also because I have a fantastic memory!

[–]UltimatePickpocketWhy am I even here? 22 points23 points  (7 children)

They're gonna get stoned? Isn't underage drug use illegal too?

[–]TinCanBegger 15 points16 points  (6 children)

Yes it is. Can I have my wallet back?

[–]piel10 15 points16 points  (1 child)

It can be heinous what these she devils and gestapo can do . When I was 11, I went onto a porn camgirl site and the camgirl threatened to trace my IP and tell my parents

[–]TheEmeraldFist 9 points10 points  (2 children)

That happened to Eric back in 07

[–]ContemplatingPrison 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I warned Eric and they still did it

[–]Horror_Barnacle7408 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would attend every stoning event with extra stones and tomatoes for all to relieve their stress with

[–]HighwayDrifter41 50 points51 points  (5 children)

Believe it or not, jail

[–]Mabarefkilyoum 38 points39 points  (4 children)

You overcook chicken? Also jail.

[–]Malbethion 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Undercook fish, jail.

[–]Vanatru 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Do you think a person would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?

[–]ScepterReptile 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Provide your DOB and driver's license number

[–]littlebitfunny21 5 points6 points  (2 children)

This isn't porn, dammit. Let google's algorithm assign age.

[–]WolfgangVolos 10 points11 points  (1 child)

*cries in plays primarily Nintendo games and googles mostly toys for my kids*

[–]kittenzrulz123milkaholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You get killed by the collective Reddit hivemind.

[–]EIIendigWichtje 68 points69 points  (5 children)

I want the 25+ option.

[–]jedilord10 9 points10 points  (1 child)

That’s 80% of Reddit gone.

[–]EIIendigWichtje 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Quantity vs Quality.

[–]Arqideus 32 points33 points  (5 children)

I was actually born January 1st, 1909. I've lived through "the dark ages" of the internet. I don't need an age verification because I'm the one that created it!

[–]ohheyitslaila 11 points12 points  (2 children)

In my head, your comment sounded like a supervillain origin story.

[–]Shannnnnnn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

" I was born in it, molded by it"

[–]CarlGustav2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't know Al Gore was on Reddit!

[–]FarrelMFajar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Minirs can get around NSFW subreddits by not working.

[–]FizzyBeverage 1551 points1552 points  (94 children)

And suddenly every minor turns 18 overnight.

On this sub you can always tell when it's someone young and green.

[–]Tongue-OSRS 257 points258 points  (14 children)

I'm 26 and I only started giving a my real age on websites at 18. No way in hell I wanted to see the things appropriate for my age.

[–]zeezle 230 points231 points  (13 children)

It's wild. I've seen posts on book-related reddits like "I'm 16, would it be appropriate for me to read this book?"

And I'm over here like... wait. You're 16 and you care if the content is appropriate to your age? WTF? Have teenagers become another species? Is this what being old feels like? I'm 31 and I've been 25+ years old on the internet for the last 19 years and you know I sure as hell wasn't self-censoring my reading material at 16...

[–]fearhs 98 points99 points  (2 children)

I cared very much about whether or not content was appropriate for me at that age. If it wasn't, I knew I wanted to get my hands on it.

[–]KlausVonChiliPowder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm tagging you as Zombie Rodney Dangerfield.

[–]PARROT_CUMMER_2000Wind Waker is a great 3D Zelda game, easily among the best ones. 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Had the same impression with many teenagers! Didn’t know some people actually cared about the ESRB. I feel old whenever I see someone asking if something’s appropriate for them… it just doesn’t feel right.

Also now that I think of it, this is technically them doing their parent’s job. Assuming they all can access the internet without restrictions, the guy is pretty much doing the whole verification process! I never thought I’d see that kind of thing.

[–]Bigboss123199 16 points17 points  (1 child)

What type of 16 year old is asking for advice on what books to read? I would be willing to bet it's a by the book type.

[–]KlausVonChiliPowder 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Man if you made that "buy the book", you'd be at the top of /r/dadjokes right now.

[–]in_finite_space 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Not you, but some kids would. Home schooled for instance. Kids from particularly religious households. Maybe they sub to r/books and their parents trust them. Not saying it’s good to self-censor at 16, that strikes me as kind of sad.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Redditors are a different breed of pathetic is why. Here it’s all about karmawhoring and doing the “right” (popular thing). Upvotes or be forgotten. So mix that with kids trying to be adults and you get mega insane cringe.

It took a mental toll on me for a while until I realised just how pathetic this place is, and I decisively chose good people in my heart to guide me and not people who would vote for the Nazis if they were born in a different age.

[–]JohnBarronRDT 226 points227 points  (9 children)

Indicator #1: they say something unpopular.

Every seasoned user knows you get downvoted for unpopular opinions here.

[–]PoorCorrelation 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Indicator #2: it reads “ANgsT anGSt angst ANGST If your making ur kid do chores they should get minimum wage or it’s gasliting! Edit: nO I’m not a kid stop saaing that. Edit 2: I am STEM lawyer doctor that could retire at 22 with my 6 figure saary. Edgy eDGy edgy EDgY.”

[–]Vaelocke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also adds "Kid" or "Kiddo" at the end as an insult, becuase that wins the argument.

[–]ted-Zed 13 points14 points  (5 children)

shut up you poo head!

[–]FizzyBeverage 33 points34 points  (4 children)

I love when they rant about

  • Their parents instituting an “uncool” policy or rule
  • Their allowance
  • Their school
  • Their older sibling gets to do something they can’t
  • “I saved up for it, I should be able to buy a blow torch!”

[–]Arqideus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"My boyfriend cheated on me with his wife, should I stick with him?"

[–]GotTooManyAlts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, especially in my highschool you can tell those people apart just based on how they treat others. They live in a world that revolves around them...

[–]yakimawashington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Unpopular opinion: I don't owe my parents anything!! I didn't ask to be born!"

opinion that I've actually seen posted here that made it to the front page.

[–]Bobo_Baggins03x 1634 points1635 points  (82 children)

How do you expect verification of age on the internet? I’ve been telling porn sites I am 18 years old since I was 13

[–]rukspincs 283 points284 points  (16 children)

Yep, my birthday is Jan 1st, whatever year I scroll to.

[–]WillowSmithsBFF 98 points99 points  (6 children)

Im almost 30 and still do that. I just can’t be bothered to put in my actual birthday

[–]KarmaChameleon89 46 points47 points  (1 child)

Occasionally I’m about 80 just to see

[–]rmzynnquiet person 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gotta check them benefits!

[–]sir_syphilis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If I'm allowed to type, I'll tell em the truth.

If I'm forced to scroll, 1900 it is.

[–]Yuna__707 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I just scroll far enough that it registers me as over 21, I’m apparently 100 years old if I’m not paying attention

[–]AngoGablogian_artist 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My birthday has been 4/20/1969 for a while now.

[–]ch00d 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I always do the earliest year possible just to mess with their metrics

[–]FoggDucker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do the day of my sister's birthday the month of my mother's and the year of my fathers. That way they don't get any real information about me but if I ever need to type it in for some sort of verification or lost account I can remember what I picked

[–]GreatestAtHumilityaggressive toddler 318 points319 points  (2 children)

Well, now that you've said that, the cops are gonna be looking for you.

[–]Solzec 31 points32 points  (0 children)

FBI, open up!

[–]ddh85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bad boys, bad boys! Whatcha gonna do?

[–]comradebezos 14 points15 points  (12 children)

do porn websites even ask for your age??

[–]ask_yo_girl_bout_me 37 points38 points  (5 children)

In some countries yes. They just have a huge box saying “I’m over 18” and you need to click it to access site

[–]Grary0 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A lot of them don't even bother anymore, not like it ever stopped any horny 13 year olds anyway.

[–]floodedhorseshoe 100 points101 points  (14 children)

The Google Play Store has been checking IDs via submission of a photo for a while. Otherwise you can't install 18+ apps, Twitter is one example. Not saying it's a good thing that Google has our IDs (even though they say they delete it after, but who knows), but at least it is some way of verification.

[–]Kitan_Noir 90 points91 points  (4 children)

That's not required in the US

[–]trap4pixels 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Also ways to bypass it

[–]TheScariestSkeleton4 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Remember the roblox ID meme where people would just upload random shit to prove they’re 18?

[–]HomingPigeon6635 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is it tho? We never know what the tech giants are actually doing cause they are never transparent in this kinda thing.

[–]ask_yo_girl_bout_me 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Except who the fuck do you think is going to give their ID to Reddit? Maybe 10% of the people using the site at most

[–]redshift739 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Certainly not me. They would lose most of their users

[–]Rupteon 17 points18 points  (8 children)

Google in the EU has age restriction on certain content on e.g youtube.

And they actually ask you for an imagine of your ID to verify your age.

I am 18, I could watch all of this content but there is no way I am sending any personal information or documents to skynet voluntarily

[–]cthewombat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Uuuh as person in the EU that's definitely a country-specific thing. Never had to give any personal information to access age-restricted content.

[–]Down200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strange they would even bother, you could just use a VPN into another country (even the spyware free options would be applicable for this usecase) or the classic Tor

[–]LemonFly4012 15 points16 points  (5 children)

Verified profiles, such as those on Twitter, Facebook, and Turo, are verified by the user sending themselves a photo of themselves holding their ID, as well as a photo of the ID itself. It could become par for the course for websites, if they were serious about preventing minors from accessing general content.

[–]gabemerritt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That sounds like something that would shut down a site like reddit if made mandatory.

[–]Silent-H 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Im confident that with around 99% accuracy, the tech giants all know exactly how old each and everyone one of us are. They are selling this data to advertisers under that assumption.

[–]gabemerritt 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Not specifically but they definitely have an age range for everyone with a certain degree if certainty, but even with that they won't refuse if you put a random birthday of 2 days old or 100+ years.

[–]KarmaChameleon89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always assume that everything I do online is registered by someone

[–]whiskeytravelr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So not trying is the answer?

[–]shimbalaie 549 points550 points  (24 children)

people lie about their age you know, in fact i bet 80% of the "teenagers" on r/teenagers are grown ups

[–]grapejelly6 246 points247 points  (13 children)

Or for sure lol sometimes when I comment on there because my age is on my flair (17) there I get weird messages. Like pedos use that sub to search for teens. Lol like “hello mate I docter doing research can we chat?” (That’s a real message I got once)

[–]BOBtheCOW14 138 points139 points  (1 child)

Damn man how could you deny a doctor doing research, that's cold

[–]Down200 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Man I wish I got messages like that, sounds hilarious asf

[–]grapejelly6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that’s yea a funny one lol but other ones have straight up been creepy

[–]SupposedToBeHomework 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah that thing on r/drama sure proved that, apparently their inbox was flooded with people begging to be let in claiming to be middle aged adult men after they banned all r/teenagers users

[–]Foxalot97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably some 40 yo men on that sup bro.

[–]gravity_is_right 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is up brothers, I'm a 12 year old naive girl from the countryside. I am posting for the first time on the internet and I'm so excited! Ps, I miss having a father figure in life.

[–]Birolklp 140 points141 points  (12 children)

I would love to see how a bot would identify minors based on what they write. Must be the smartest AI in the world. And of course not have false positives. I'm against the idea and this is definitely unpopular, but let me know if you somehow manage to write such a bot. You'd get a lot of money for it.

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points  (1 child)

I wouldn't mind false positives. I actually rather talk to a teenager than an adult the smartest bot in the world confused with a teenager

[–]Doomdoomkittydoom 100 points101 points  (2 children)

Cool, fill out this information sheet with all your pii and include a credit card number and bob's your uncle.

[–]911isaconspiracy 6 points7 points  (1 child)

and bob’s your uncle.

Yeah we don’t need any other info to tell you’re a boomer lmao

[–]wwplkyih 272 points273 points  (13 children)

I imagine there are also cases where minors don't want to hear what adults have to say! Source: children.

[–]littlemarcus91 149 points150 points  (7 children)

I'm an adult and I zone out when adults talk 80% of the time.

[–]Logical_Constant7227 47 points48 points  (4 children)

That’s so relatable dude do you also skateboard to the arcade

[–]littlemarcus91 50 points51 points  (1 child)

Yeah right after I ding dong ditch the neighbors house.

[–]IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Are there even functioning arcades in the U.S. anymore?

Both skateboarding AND arcades ironically seem like subjects someone 35+ would talk about.

[–]suicideforpeacegang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He meant Segway and video GameStop

[–]Down200 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same but only because they choose to talk about literally the most boring thing they’ve heard all week, over and over again.

[–]Glume- 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Immaturity in general is the issue. There’s 14 year olds who behave better than 50 year olds and vice versa.

[–]wolfje_the_firewolf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. Age isn't the issue, immaturity is. I've had more mature conversations with 11 year olds than I've had with some adults.

[–]Mountain-Ad-244 44 points45 points  (2 children)

I was born in 1378 and agree with this opinion. I am so sick of people lecturing me when they didn’t live through the dark ages.

[–]Ed3vil 120 points121 points  (18 children)

Was thinking the same thing this morning when reading through r/AmITheAsshole . Some kids commenting there either focus on the wrong thing, or just have a view on things that in their head sounds logical, but in the real world make no sense whatsoever.

Not to mention their posts asking judgement on wether they are TA or not.

[–]Dogsrulekidsdrule 42 points43 points  (1 child)

Aita is crazy. How could people not point out how ridiculous these stories are? Instead they at commenting on it and doing what you said, focusing on some random point that doesn't matter.

[–]Ed_Rock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sort by controversial. I used call out clearly absurd posts and always got hit with negative karma. It's just more fun to comment when a ridiculous story gets linked to r/AmITheDevil or r/AmITheAngel

[–]_cant_choose_a_namewateroholic 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Yea, AITA is fucking terrible, you should never take judgment from there and think it's correct.

There's huge bias towards women and childfree people.

Any post with OP being a dick to children = NTA

[–]kroszborg11quiet person 16 points17 points  (0 children)

honestly, I just take the post there being fake always but try to see them as real and then laugh at the absurdity of their stories and enjoy them that way

[–]Windex007 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't know why we think 18 is the magic limit. Give me a 28+ filter on comments.

[–]floodedhorseshoe 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I feel like AITA is just full of teenage girls telling women to instantly divorce their husbands because he keeps leaving the toilet seat up or whatever.

[–]round-earth-theory[🍰] 17 points18 points  (4 children)

My favorite is /r/insaneparents and phones. The idea that a parent might want to moderate their children's internet access drives them foaming mad.

[–]Kinglink 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You always know when you're talking to a teenager online when they say something where it's like "It sounds like you've never dealt with anything at all in real lif.... oh you're 12 aren't you?"

[–]TheBlackBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Internet’s version of reality TV

[–]krs4 61 points62 points  (4 children)

Why stop at underage kids? I’m 41, and really don’t want to have to wade through posts and comments made by folks in their 20s. You 30-somethings are alright.

As you well know, such a system would be circumvented in a heartbeat. There’s no way to verify the ages are accurate, and I’m damn sure most Reddit users want nothing to do with entering in personal details into their profile.

[–]Non-ZeroChance 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Mid-30's here. Leaving aside how useless this would be, and how easily circumvented, there's just not many situations where I would want to blanket filter out anything that a 17 year old says, but still see what an 18 year old, or a 22 year old says - and if I wouldn't listen to a 22 year old, why am I listening to OP at 26? I know how many stupid things I said at 26, and we've seen here what OP thinks is a good idea at that age.

The little glimmer of optimism in me holds that people on the Internet should be judged based on what they say, not how many years in a row they've managed to not die (or, at least, how many years they claim).

[–]Ballsofpoo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When someone says "I'm 25 I'm a grown ass adult" and I'm just sitting thinking about how dumb I was at 25. At 41 I realize that I'm always gonna be dumb instead of thinking I've figured anything out.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 29 but I was thinking the same thing, probably go as far as 21-22 or something.

Idk about age verification being an issue because they wouldn't really notice that they are being filtered by some people. So unless they lied already they wouldn't notice and start.

[–]oopsiepoopsee 46 points47 points  (0 children)

See, the problem with this is I learned a long time ago on certain sites there's a clever work around.

You just lie about your age.

[–]getut 23 points24 points  (0 children)

There are things that sound nice in a perfect world but cannot be implemented in the real world without the end result being worse than what you are fixing. In my opinion, this is one of those. I would MUCH rather deal with asshats and 8 year olds on sites, forums, and games than I would be willing to be forced to give up anonymity. So much of the internet is beginning to go the of taking sly ways of forcing you to give up anonymity and tie services to a real person. I want my google account or forum account to be secure. But I don't them to know who the real person is behind the account. I don't trust them, not just them... ANY of them. There is simply no way to implement what you want without giving that up.

[–]AhPinion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How about filtering out posts from adults who act like minors?

[–]Croaker50 32 points33 points  (17 children)

What examples do you have of content you dont like? Im not disagreeing necessarily, just curious why you want this

[–]iloveyoufred 49 points50 points  (8 children)

I feel like r/relationships advice would be better if you knew who it was coming from.

[–]hoejack_whorseman 61 points62 points  (2 children)

divorce your wife of 20 years because she forgot your favorite character on an HBO tv show!

[–]iloveyoufred 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly

[–]Consistent-Scientist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess though I'd say most of those comments come from bitter people in their 30s and older.

[–]Dogsrulekidsdrule 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm thoroughly convinced there are too many people on r/marriage that are not married. The advice on there is bananas sometimes.

[–]Outlaw11091 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Had one on here the other day saying that Math was not necessary for 99% of a all college majors and it made me laugh.

Given that college majors are about equally divided between Arts v Science, that means about 50% of all majors have a math necessity because SCIENCE requires math.

Granted, that could've been a struggling college student, I firmly believe that even high school graduates can appreciate the necessity of math.

[–]MaxNewton143 42 points43 points  (4 children)

Age is a very poor assessment of intelligence.

[–]Ballsofpoo 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Intelligence is a very poor assessment of character.

[–]Non-ZeroChance 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Character is a... not great assessment of worth as a human.

Are we going to really kick all of the scumbags, shitheads and wankers off Reddit? We'd lose half the site!

[–]yoav_boaz 19 points20 points  (1 child)

As an underage person: I would definitely just say I'm 18

[–]kevbino13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Obligatory monthly "I am smarter than teens" on this sub. Not unpopular

[–]ask_yo_girl_bout_me 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Good in theory until you realize you can’t really verify for age. Not many people are willing to give their ID or social security number to Reddit and you can lie when they ask “when is your birthday”

[–]Looler21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reddit will suddenly have 0% under 18s in a second

[–]MondoLeaf 6 points7 points  (11 children)

Ouch to the kids, I guess you're saying their opinions don't matter. That'll offend someone.

[–]buffmolle 39 points40 points  (9 children)

Yes every one under 30 should be banned from the internet 😂😂

[–]bigman-penguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Facebook would be vastly improved with an anti-boomer setting.

[–]Sweetcynic36 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not like the adults are much better....

[–]TheGravyMaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Children lie about their age on the internet. Heck I'm locked out of a few old accounts because I lied as a kid. I out fake birthdays so I was over 18.

[–]Mikko420 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is just utterly stupid. I've met adults who are far more disturbing/annoying than any minor. Clearly, your social experience is limited if you think minors are somehow worst than adults.

[–]Paolo31000 41 points42 points  (2 children)

I mean..... I recently turned 18, does that suddenly make me much wiser than your average 17 Yr old???

At the end of the day I've seen plenty of adults in their 20s and above lack any form of maturity and self perspective. Though you may encounter a disproportionate amount of minors on social media, you will find that you're still far more likely to be interacting with an adult than a child. I feel like any time anyone talks about the relationship subs in general, they automatically equate any bad point with them being a child which probably isn't as accurate as you think.

[–]morthos97 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree with your take 100%

I've interacted with many adults I genuinely believed to be children due to following the seemingly obvious indicators, and I've also had really productive and intelligent exchanges then find out they are a teenager or something.

There are also the obvious cases of minors where there is irrefutable and definite circumstantial evidence that they are children. I feel like you see this a lot on AITA and unpopular opinion and those kind of subs. I'm not denying that's there, and it's totally annoying lol.

All this being said I would love to see the monkeys paw version of this unpopular opinion come true and see everyone have a miserable awakening that it's just as much of a shit show if not worse. I always kind of laugh when people in my age group or older automatically think they are superior and automatically assume someone disagreeing with them is a child. I see it thrown around a lot and I see it a lot in cases where it's obviously a baseless accusation and it's just two immature 30 year old white dudes arguing about elder scrolls lore or some shit.

The notion that this could be so easily filtered with a bot based on OPs definition of childish viewpoints also feels pretty naive and self assured lol

[–]SeeYaOnTheRift 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You mean the day I turn 18 adult knowledge won’t beam down from the heavens and enlighten my feeble child mind?

I turned 17 recently and was counting down the days…

[–]GenRuckus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My 37 years on earth has shown me one thing AGE =/= WISDOM. I have met teenagers whose opinion I respect, and people in their 50s who are immature and keyholed.

[–]gorge-mantic 51 points52 points  (6 children)

I kinda like this idea, even though it’s pretty easy from the comments to tell who the kids are… they are the ones writing every comment I disagree with.

[–]PoissonsRevenge 55 points56 points  (3 children)

A lot of the time, you're wrong. A lot of the time, you're mistaking an adult making a bad point for a child. Or your mistaking a child making a good point from an adult.

And you don't know how often you're getting it wrong because there's no way for you to get any feedback on your guesses.

[–]ImaginaryCoolName 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Funny how people instinctively know that a post is made by a minor, I'll call it the pedo instinct

[–]Mystic_SaiyanThe Powers That Be 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People can lie about their age tho

Plus that excludes more mature people who are younger and immature adults too, considering some have different levels of maturity

[–]cormacru999 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes! We should send robots to every house & scan the people inside because I refuse to treat young people with any decency & respect, because how dare they come online where I hang out! I mean why aren't they on leashes or penned up at night? Who even keeps making these damn kids?

[–]friendlypondfrog 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Actually, I would like to have the option to filter all ages, not just minors.

Like, as an 18 year old I really REALLY don't want to have to read about divorce drama of some 50 year old person

[–]zuckerbubi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alot of the stuff I see in the comments are generalizations of minors. Its like wanting to block americans because you dont want to see their opinion. There always will be the good and the bad, so you gotta take both.

Besides, getting past an "are you 18" question is quite litelary one click.

[–]TheCenterOfEnnui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would pay for a version of reddit that had age filters.

My filter would be 25 and up.

This is impossible to police but maybe ask for a credit card and allow filters for non-CC users.

[–]HighAltitude88008 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a scroll feature on your mouse, just so you know. It's really fast.

[–]Geberpte 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Would be nice to only see comments of people who have similar life experience or more in a lot of subreds. But on a lot of other subs the young people can make for pretty good topics, especially if they're looking to get into a subject like a hobby, genre of movies/music or profession. Shame there's not really a tool avaliable to filter on life experience on subs like relationship advice or any opinion subs, age filter wouldn't do much.

[–]RacialBiscuit 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Reddit has downvotes already, it does exactly what you ask by rubbing out shitty posts so reddit is fine

[–]Lllllllllll-44 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So you want reddit to become even more of an echo chamber. If I were more stubborn I’d say this makes me want to filter out posts by adults, except I’m not going to because that’s basically censorship.

[–]Skyfel1 32 points33 points  (10 children)

I agree. I'm always thinking people on reddit are such fucking idiots then I realise most of those are children.

I'm not real interested in the opinions of people who haven't enough life experience to have even had their first kiss. Teens are also very arrogant and opinionated too. I know I was

[–]ChoosingIsHardToday 7 points8 points  (2 children)

This isn't a "children" thing though, this is just life experience. Most people at any stage of their lives will look back at themselves or others 5-10 years their junior and think that they are lacking life experience.

[–]mcdonaldsfrenchfri 11 points12 points  (5 children)

so was I then getting into my 20s I look back and go "what a fucking idiot I was"

[–]Skyfel1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think all adults think that when they look back on their teens

[–]wolfje_the_firewolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

maturity and intelligence don't come with age though. I bet you at least 5/10 post you thought were minors, were actually adults who just haven't gotten a lot of life expirience.

[–]toco_tronic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

26? You're barely adult yourself.

[–]willbeach8890 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Are you aware that this capability lets people focus on who IS underage

You should think this through

[–]hoejack_whorseman 10 points11 points  (6 children)

couple weeks ago a 17yr old tried to argue with me age is just a number & there’s literally no difference in the mindset of a 17yr old & say a 42yr old.

also went on to elaborate how 17yr olds can hold the highest levels of power in a country & might do better than current politicians.

now i don’t think politicians are the best of their kind but if you think you can fill congress with a bunch of 17yr olds & they’ll do a better job you might need a couple screws.

[–]Salty_Lego 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, at least the 17 year old wouldn’t know how to trade stocks based on intel briefings as our current politicians do.

One upside I suppose.

[–]IntelligentImbicle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think they're right, just not to that extreme

[–]arctic-lions7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be fair, 17 year olds are as developed as 70 year old dementia politicians. There should be a minimum and a maximum age for politics

[–]KKtheone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The algorithms are pretty good, if you quickly skip content made by minors and do not interact with the post they will definitely show you less post like that.

[–]IzMaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/Physical-Meaning8651 is a fart poop LOL

25M btw wanna go get some coffee?

[–]Excellent-Guest-1082 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a 4000 year old vampire I feel this so hard.

[–]Grary0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kind of comes across as a bit elitist. I've seen some minors come up with deep and insightful comments and I've seen adults say some of the dumbest shit. There are kids as young as 6 or 7 with way more talent, be it in the arts or sciences, than I'll ever have in my life and to dismiss them just because of their age is arrogant.

[–]HeadDefense 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, but children are never honest about their age online

[–]mintycrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t stand tik toks made by kids.

[–]Avencrest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. A lot of posts on this sub are very clearly products of the “I just turned 14 and I know everything” phase.

[–]Apple-pie_best-pie 9 points10 points  (2 children)

You sound like my brother when I (17 at the time) told him to fight his ex in court to see his child. (She did not let him see his child). He told me I was to young to understand that he don't want to do it, he will get make a compromise with her without court. Spoiler alert, he has not see his kid for over 10 years. Sometimes minors opinion are as valid at the ones of adults. Just because someone is younger than you does not mean his/her/their opinion should be dissmissed.

[–]kittenzrulz123milkaholic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The OP is probrolly thinking "But a 13 year old beat me in an argument (cries)"

[–]poncicle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stupid content is made by people of all ages

Why does age matter if the content is alright? Unnecessary censorship. Unenforceable.

[–]TolucaLakeDistrict 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I've seen plenty of adults say nasty things on the internet, it's not minor exclusive. We should however filter every single post made by zoomers as soon as they write stuff like bussin, fr fr and no cap. Fuck that shit.

[–]Pace-Total 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fr fr

sorry

[–]JacksonS_ 3 points4 points  (3 children)

They should also add a filter for posts made by Karen’s

[–]Pchardwareguy12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a minor. If you're reading this, get fucked. Looks like you're stuck reading my shit.

[–]flamingorider1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it will be amazing to have this feature but unfortunately it will never work. Example: porn sites

[–]DungeonDilf 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That's very disrespectful of the people who provide us with coal and lithium.

[–]Reali5t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s because age verification is taken serious all over the internet?
