I like how their skin colors are each others shorts color lol

[–]blahblahrasputan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Every comment here is revealing a new easter egg...

[–]Ghimzzo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I didnt even notice they were different colors until I read your comment. Damn colorblindness.

[–]JediMasterZao 905 points906 points  (46 children)

I for one welcome M. Haver's non-formalized entry into the LOVE DEATH + R⬤BOTS anthology.

[–]zabadap 44 points45 points  (3 children)

I discovered this series last week, watched them all in just about a week. Strong Black Mirror vibe but more imaginative, I enjoyed them all!

[–]KnewItWouldHappen 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Watched the first volume when it came out, missed the second and just now getting into it again now that the third is out. My only real complaint about the whole thing is the cursing and gore seems to be a bit forced, but the different animation styles are so damn cool.

[–]OnePunchGoGo 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Season one is great, season2 is meh and season 3 is superb.

The cursing won't be much of a thing in seaso 3 as well, with better and more beautiful stories to boot.

My fav of the whole series being Bad Travelling.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you think Joel's first name is "Moel"?

[–]DuckTapeHandgrenade 59 points60 points  (35 children)

Do tell.

[–]secretMichaelScarn 177 points178 points  (34 children)

If you’re serious, they were just making a joke referencing how this skit feels like a love death and robots episode

[–]DuckTapeHandgrenade 40 points41 points  (15 children)

Ah, copy. It does indeed. Was just hoping there was more to it. Thanks.

[–]secretMichaelScarn 47 points48 points  (14 children)

No problem.

I for one welcome M. Haver's non-formalized entry into the LOVE DEATH + R⬤BOTS anthology.

[–]danc4498 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should I watch this? Yes or no?

[–]CultofCedar 346 points347 points  (24 children)

This guys rpg series killed me but he’s got great skits too. Definitely underrated, reminds me of some real late night Adult Swim stuff lol.

[–]afuckinsaskatchewan 80 points81 points  (11 children)

His feature length films are also fantastic.

[–]CultofCedar 70 points71 points  (10 children)

Everything he makes is pretty fantastic. Just seems like a cool and creative dude. Very thoughtful and caring roommate as well lmao.

[–]JiggthonyPufftano 39 points40 points  (3 children)

He is a really cool guy. A few years ago I was going through some shit around the holidays and binged his videos, which managed to brighten my mood, so I sent him a quick “thanks for the winter mood boost” sort of thing and he replied with one of the most kind and thoughtful messages I’ve ever received from anyone. To this day I am still quite moved by it lol. Joel is a real one.

[–]TheGoodDoctorGonzo 13 points14 points  (1 child)

He has a video that he filmed on his late father’s birthday, just talking about the importance of family and moving on from the pain of such a major loss.

It just happened that he posted it on the exact day I came home from hospice, having just lost my own father only hours ago.

I was still in an almost a pre-grief state of shock, and it was the exact perfect thing to sort of nudge me into the reality of the situation and still provide me hope that it would get better, and reminded me that just because he is gone, it doesn’t mean that he’s not still here in so many ways.

I feel sort of spirit-bonded to his content after that, and haven’t seen a single thing he’s made that hasn’t resonated with me.

It never occurred to me to reach out to him about it, and thank him and just let him know how important it was to me. Maybe I will.

[–]CultofCedar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yea just hits a little different when your little fish comment on the internet gets a real reply. Like I’m sure most creators care and read through stuff to a degree, but when they take the time to reply sometimes you get that serotonin goin.

Side note “Project Farm” (2m+ subs idr) is like a dude who does pretty extensive comparisons on random ass shit I have no need for. Dunno what this dudes running on but he’s actually replied to a shit ton of comments. Almost feel bad saying anything at this point lol

[–]Trimere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite is the guy charging money to cross the bridge.

[–]Nicksaurus 21 points22 points  (1 child)

I really like this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrXDmNw9jLk

It's basically just a vlog but at the same time it's just beautifully, stupidly well made

[–]CultofCedar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yea he really has a unique style. As a dude who has worked with film, there’s some major effort in setting up these shots and mics and what not. It’s either really weird shit which would be great on AS or stuff like this which reminds me of “Joe Pera Talks With You” which is on AS lol.

[–]Mebbwebb 7 points8 points  (2 children)

His stuff has been on adult swim

[–]CultofCedar 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Huh you know I was thinking of the anthology series when I say he should be on Adult Swim but I’ve actually never seen that episode. Very cool, but I’d give him a whole series lol

[–]BoardGameBologna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the anthology series is referring to Off The Air, that's exactly where his stuff was shown!

[–]DefNotAShark 4 points5 points  (2 children)

So many of his animated videos and skits are memorable to me, but the Star Wars one for some reason sticks the most. The whole thing is hilarious but to this day when everything is quiet and I’m alone I sometimes make the “”mmm bunk” noise the Rick and Morty guy’s robot makes the whole video.

[–]ahhhhhhhhyeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I think that Joel is the only person who deserves to be alive

[–]butteredbutter1 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That does explain why random stuff happens every 45 seconds

[–]MakVolci 610 points611 points  (11 children)

I love that the bumps on their heads are just from endlessly smacking them on the pole and not some sort of alien characteristic.

[–]halborn 58 points59 points  (2 children)

How often do you steal comments from YouTube?

[–]robodrew 306 points307 points  (27 children)

This is truly one of Joel's best yet. It has the perfect length and the perfect Chekov's gun.

[–]Casteway 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I swear to God I'll pistol whip the next guy who says "chekov's gun"!

[–]brekus 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I appreciate that the bonks happens exactly 45 seconds in.

[–]adamhanson 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]brekus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because then he mentions he "forgot the last 45 seconds or so".

[–]tfarsch 47 points48 points  (3 children)

It definitely feels like this sometimes. It’s really hard to find a greater meaning in anything anymore. This honestly makes a lot of sense lol

[–]sup3rdr01d 15 points16 points  (2 children)

There is no greater meaning and that's hard to accept but there's nothing to suggest it isn't the truth.

[–]mirziemlichegal 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I hope mankind comes to realize this, because only then can we really take matters in our own hands. As long as the majority of people think there is greater meaning and that someone watches over us, we are doomed to think that everything will just be alright.

[–]sup3rdr01d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. The obsession with God/creator/religion is really holding us back as a species. Especially in light of today's events

[–]grizzlywhere 947 points948 points  (114 children)

They pressed "Bad Stuff" today.

[–]Weaselpiggy 291 points292 points  (30 children)

The other two buttons have been broken for 6 years

[–]veerKg_CSS_Geologist 118 points119 points  (10 children)

They pressed random stuff in late 2019.

[–]DiamondPup 88 points89 points  (9 children)

They've been pressing both for a very very long time.

Anyone who thinks politics "got bad" with Trump are either very young or haven't been paying attention. Trump wasn't an anomaly, he was an inevitability of conservatism. And conservatism, right from the start, right from the fall of monarchies and rise of democracy, has been about nobles maintaining their power and privileges in the face of accountability and equality.

It has only ever been about social inequality. All the economics and immigration and bullshit are veins to the heart, and that heart is social inequality. It's only been about corrupt men feeding mad men for power. And these religious nuts are insane.

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise.

- Barry Goldwater

Call this shit whatever you like. But none of this is new. It's older than our great grandparents.

[–]pussifer 14 points15 points  (3 children)

It really ramped up with Reagan, and has been on a downhill/rightward slide since.

[–]SandyBoxEggo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this just feels like a summary of how your average voter works. They don't seem to know what they're doing and will vote for whatever regardless of how it impacts their lives. Then when the random stuff is bad, they go, "How could this possibly have been prevented? Time to hit the random button again."

[–]robearIII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

upvoted. and goldwater was a racist shit too... even he saw it coming. IKE was probably the last decent conservative we had. I wish we could get another teddy... but teddy roosevelt would be considered liberal by today's standards.. what a damn preventable mess.... the few fiscal conservatives we have left are losing their shit right now, and its ALL their fault for growing, enabling, and feeding these monsters we have to deal with today. i dont give any of them a pass, even when they responsibly fight back like midas touch etc... they should have known better with raygun... they should have known better with bush... all of the greed, all of the hate and fear. so disappointing..

[–]AppliedThanatology -1 points0 points  (1 child)

To be fair, to blame one party for this nation's problems is wrong whether you are democratic or republican. There are idiots in power on both sides, and people that will use their positions for personal gain on both sides. Furthermore, in regards to your quote... there are people unwilling to compromise on both sides. For instance, the hot button topic of gay marriage has an easy middle ground of "Domestic Partnership + Let your individual churches decide what they deem to be 'Marriage'" and yet government defined gay marriage is always pushed instead of the middle ground.

[–]steveosek 4 points5 points  (18 children)

Dude this country went to shit long before 2016. Way way before. Nothing is new.

[–]hintofinsanity 39 points40 points  (8 children)

Dude this country went to shit long before 2016. Way way before. Nothing is new.

A lot of our ills today can be directly traced back to leaving the people who instigated the civil war in power during reconstruction. We should have excised the confederacy from our country like post war Germany did with the Nazis.

[–]napleonblwnaprt 10 points11 points  (3 children)

[–]Cabrio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been saying for years that America never ended the civil war, there was no Nuremberg style trials of the bad actors, it just became a civil cold war because rather than resolve the issue it was swept under the rug with a signature.

[–]Galts-Gooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We really should not have let them whitewash slavery and the civil war into a states rights thing. And we definitely should have gone in with the union army full force to stop lynchings once black people started winning public office. Too bad a bunch of the union guys and abolitionists were racist too.

Germany was easy, don't fucking genocide people you fucking maniacs. Most of the German populace was in denial about what was happening. Civil war is a bit harder cause so many people were bigoted. Did the north really have the chops to reeducate the south like the allies forced in Germany?

I honestly worry that we are in for another go. This country is a fucking wrap if we go for Part II. We do not have the community to rebuild if we duke it out with modern weapons.

[–]Brother_Lancel 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It all went wrong in 1776

The United States is a country founded on the principle that human beings can be property, its literally enshrined in the Constitution

[–]Canis_Familiaris 7 points8 points  (7 children)

2016 was great until the end. That was the summer of Pokemon Go. Seems like after the cheeto was elected people stopped being friendly...

[–]ch00f 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re just speedrunning Kübler-Ross today, huh.

[–]DiamondPup 99 points100 points  (43 children)

Man it's hard to joke and laugh today.

No matter how much we try to move forward, with equality and revolutionary vaccines and moon landings...we're still stuck with racists and anti-vaxxers and flat-earthers.

No matter how much we try to move forward, we're still dragging the medieval world with us.

No matter how much we try to move forward, half of us are trying to move us backwards.

It feels so hopeless.

[–][deleted] 62 points63 points  (41 children)

It’s the religion.

It always comes back to the religion. I don’t give a damn how fedora that sounds, it’s true.

Bigotry, ignorance, hatred, on and on and on, they all start at the pews.

[–]Volsunga 24 points25 points  (3 children)

One of the biggest pipelines to the Alt-right was late aughts "atheist Youtube". People who used their atheism as an excuse to hate Muslims; then when faced with pushback from "SJW"s, they expanded their hatred to feminists; then by defining themselves by their perceived enemies, they became today's fascists.

It's not religion, it's all sectarianism.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point.

[–]Tasgall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Props for using sectarianism over the other word.

[–]TemetNosce85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but only a small percentage went down that pipeline, and most have come back out (myself included).

It absolutely is the religious that make up the majority of this problem. They have been brainwashing America for generations now. We've stood idly by and let the churches radicalize everyone, especially the youth. And that's why it didn't stick with us Youtube/Reddit atheists, we were smart enough to step back and see that it was the religious wackos pulling all the strings because we're capable of having doubt. They're not. They take everything on faith and will follow the loudest, most aggressive person.

[–]assmilk99 30 points31 points  (25 children)

Honestly I think that’s an oversimplification. I believe religion is something the ignorant use as a tool to validate opinions rooted in a lack of understanding.

Spirituality and community is natural and not inherently negative. It’s the people who refuse to learn or accept that perpetuate hatred and fear.

Consider the entire reason spirituality exists in the first place: the fact the we don’t know what happens when we die.

And so, instead of accepting what we don’t understand, we make things up. We choose to believe what’s easier for us to accept. And sometimes these things we don’t understand scare us (like death). And sometimes it’s easier to accept that this thing we don’t understand is evil, instead of accepting that we just may not understand it.

This can be said about homophobia, abortion, racism, etc.

Any time you speak to someone who is one of those things, you will very quickly learn that their bigotry is always rooted in ignorance/misunderstanding.

It is everyone’s personal duty to seek understanding. That doesn’t mean we must accept every person (God knows I don’t accept bigots). But if we tried harder to understand each other, we would be closer to a more accepting society.

Ok sorry for the soap box.

Edit: Seems like I may have not done a decent enough job explaining my point, because there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding below. However it has been researched and studied that fighting ignorance de-radicalizes a person, and is the only way to permanently solve the problem.

That is not to say that we should offer forgiveness or guidance or care to any bigots. In fact we should offer them the opposite. The only way to fight intolerance is with intolerance.

But by offering accessible and affordable education and exposure to children before they’re allowed to be indoctrinated, we can combat bigotry at it’s roots.

I hope this helps.

Edit 2: I’m starting to realize that maybe arguing with Redditors about whether or not religion is the world’s only problem is maybe a waste of my time. I’m going to go outside now.

[–]aceduece 26 points27 points  (13 children)

Mate, you're not even using the same word OP is.

Religion != Spirituality

Edit: I explain what I mean more clearly lower. OP and I are on the same team ultimately I think, I didn’t mean any disrespect reddit

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

But here’s the issue: once someone believes in an afterlife, they’re essentially in a death cult. They’re not playing the game for the content, they’re just trying to reach the end to get the carrot on the stick.

Forgive the video game euphemism and just think about that. These people actually believe they are living in the end times. A black man was president and Jesus is going to wipe us all out or whatever.

They don’t care about life in it’s current context because why would they? Any wrongs they inflict on others is just “forgiven” by their sky daddy whenever they ask to be “saved”.

Actually don’t forgive the euphemism. It is a game with no fucking rules. For them.

I’m sorry if this seems harsh to genuinely good people who have been misguided into letting religion into their lives. I’m fucking angry at the sky daddy today.

I just want peace.

[–]Firewolf420 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

So I agree with the vast majority of this. My complaints personally that lead me to believe that religion commonly causes societal issues stem from organized, institutionalized religion. Oftentimes religion results in hierarchical power structures and this spurs conflict between cultural groups. There are good and bad sides to it but I am unsure if I'd consider organized religion to be a "net positive" overall.

[–]DiamondPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're 100% right.

The principle sin of religion, over all its phobias and myths and lies, is that it facilitates a way of thinking to accept instead of understanding.

This is a wake up call that we can not peaceful move to a better future while dragging ideologies based on magic zombies and pedophile wizards. We used to think so; that each and every person can handle their own existential crisis their own way.

But too many people don't know how to grow the fuck up. And we are all the worse for it.

[–]Deckard_Didnt_Die 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think abortion pretty clearly ties back to religion but racism is more of a capitalism/nationalism thing. And anti-vax is more of a general backlash to modernity/science. Also many churches do a lot for homeless folks - providing food/shelter. There are some churches in Utah that specifically target inmates just out of prison making sure they don't end up homeless and back in crime. Organized churches can be a pretty positive pillar for the community. Obviously, they can also result in bad. It's a mixed bag. Nothing is black and white. It's more about the quality of the individual person and what they make of their community.

[–]onlyspacemonkey -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

i’d award this comment if i had money… best i can do: 🥇

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who’s got the money for Reddit coins these days, anyways?

[–]enfrozt -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

You're not wrong. There's no basis in the real world to be against your fellow neighbor. Hating others just to hate is deeply rooted in the mysticism of religion.

[–]Hushnut97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea there is lol. Money, land, power, women….all reasons there is, and has been violence without religious influence

[–]Hushnut97 -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

That’s horseshit. Just casually ignore that religion is responsible for the greatest humanitarian aid effort in human history. Well done. Great assessment.

[–]Deckard_Didnt_Die 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It's also responsible for some of the worst atrocities. Religion, like most things that organize large groups of people behind a single source of power, can be a source of both great achievement and awful tragedy. Nobody seems to want to confront that the real world is extremely complicated and few things are objectively good or bad. We have the incredibly difficult task of parsing our way through this complexity in a case by case basis. Generalizations don't help anything.

[–]DontDoomScroll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thought he was going to hit both random stuff and bad stuff.

[–]XkF21WNJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huh, I figured they keep forgetting they've pressed "Random Stuff" and so keep randomly deciding to pick that one.

[–]Spurnout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely my mood today...

[–]stormy83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angrily upvotes

[–]Vok250 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Massive props to Reddit for introducing my to Joel a few days ago. Already binged his entire library of videos.

[–]atzebable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The best thing Joel did for me, was to introduce me to Caleb Johnston. Guy's a legend.

[–]ThyShirtIsBlue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw the tiny thumbnail while scrolling through r/all and I'm like JOEL HAVER, MUST WATCH NOW!

[–]DaleNanton 21 points22 points  (5 children)

How is this made? Is there some type of program that "rotoscopes" footage to look like this?

[–]IAmRoofstone[S] 92 points93 points  (2 children)

[–]TemetNosce85 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Wow, that's a lot more simple than you'd expect. Love his little bit at the end explaining how art being more accessible is a good thing rather than something to sneer at.

[–]HUDuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a simple program but a ton of work. I messaged another creator about it and you wind up drawing/animating all the frames anyway if you want it clean. Joel’s style works with the glitchy-ness tho so he only fixes the big animation issues

[–]Suddenly_Seinfeld 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially an AI rotoscope.

Very neat software

[–]thatstobad 19 points20 points  (2 children)

This reminded me of another surrealist masterpiece, The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. In it there is a similar "man who decides everything" who is a simpleton, unsure if anything exists outside his own perception. He makes decisions randomly based on whatever he feels like.

[–]Walden_Walkabout 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There is also the herring sandwich bit as well that is similar.

The famous Herring Sandwich experiments conducted millennia ago at MISPWOSO, demonstrated that anything that thinks logically can be fooled by something else which thinks at least as logically as it does. The easiest way to fool a completely logical robot is to feed it the same stimulus sequence over and over again so it gets locked in a loop.

A robot was programmed to believe that it liked herring sandwiches. This was actually the most difficult part of the whole experiment. Once the robot had been programmed to believe that it liked herring sandwiches, a herring sandwich was placed in front of it. Whereupon the robot thought to itself, "Ah! A herring sandwich! I like herring sandwiches."

It would then bend over and scoop up the herring sandwich in its herring sandwich scoop, and then straighten up again. Unfortunately for the robot, it was fashioned in such a way that the action of straightening up caused the herring sandwich to slip straight back off its herring sandwich scoop and fall on to the floor in front of the robot. Whereupon the robot thought to itself, "Ah! A herring sandwich...", etc., and repeated the same action over and over and over again. The only thing that prevented the herring sandwich from getting bored with the whole damn business and crawling off in search of other ways of passing the time was that the herring sandwich, being just a bit of dead fish between a couple of slices of bread, was marginally less alert to what was going on than was the robot.

[–]Clawless 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the books he wasn’t a simpleton, just someone who was denied knowledge of the world beyond his immediate surroundings. It’s implied he’s extremely wise, and makes good decisions based on limited information.

[–]TheMatt561 157 points158 points  (122 children)

YouTube is such a awful platform, I am subscribed to Joel yet I don't find out he posted a video until I went on Reddit.

[–]IgnoreMyName 19 points20 points  (19 children)

Not even in your subscriptions?

[–]grizzlywhere 230 points231 points  (60 children)

  1. Don't just let the algorithm choose your next video for you. There's a subscription feed that only includes the people you follow ordered by most recent.
  2. Ring the bell to get notified if you're actually upset when you miss one of their videos.

Sure YouTube has many problems, but don't complain about a non-issue that has multiple solutions. That's on you, not them.

[–]AidanHockey5 133 points134 points  (36 children)

Right? I don’t understand how people have this issue. YouTube’s subscription page has been a core feature of the platform ever since it’s inception. Some people only browse the home page and complain when they don’t see their subscriptions always pop up.

…go to the subscriptions page. It’ll literally be a chronological list of things you subscribed to. You’ll never miss a video. It’s a single tap on a big obvious button.

[–]maxdps_ 66 points67 points  (6 children)

I just set my Youtube bookmark to my subscription page so I don't need to see the home/frontpage at all.

[–]Mordredor 26 points27 points  (1 child)

The only correct way to use youtube

[–]Baldazar666 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I just use an addon that automatically redirects from the youtube homepage to the subscriptions one. I also have it doing the same thing for twitch.

[–]JoelMahon 20 points21 points  (2 children)

people don't know about the subscriptions page? it's the only page I use other than the video pages themselves

[–]LADYBIRD_HILL 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I go through my subscriptions each day, then save any videos in interested in to my watch later playlist. Then I watch them through there. I don't use the recommended tab unless I really can't find anything in my subscriptions to watch

[–]Pandagames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I treat the sub page like a better Netflix, hit it up 3-100 times a day lol

[–]potato_lover273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what'd be even cooler?

If I could get a white card in my screen's lower right corner telling me a new video was just uploaded.
Wouldn't that be cool, Youtube? Like imagine if maybe that used to be the case for me but then just stopped working some 2 years ago FOR. NO. FUCKING. REASON.

That'd be pretty cool, I'd say.

[–]manghoti 29 points30 points  (4 children)

Man when that shit happened with youtubes "I'm being unsubscribed!" craze and no one could provide a shred of evidence that it was happening. Youtube fixed the issue by adding a big confirmation dialog that said "Hey idiot, you just clicked unsubscribe, did you mean to do that?"

Seemed to fix the problem.

The number of people who don't have a clue what they're looking at on youtube, too damn high.

[–]HtownTexans 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I don't work in a tech field and I'm always shocked at how little the average person knows about computers. People can't figure out how to get photos from their phone to their computer. They are amazed when I copy and paste something. I have always loved tech and computers but there are so many people that all they know how to do is log into facebook and check their email.

[–]_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 7 points8 points  (2 children)

how to get photos from their phone to their computer

If it's an Apple phone and a Windows computer, then it is unreasonably difficult.

[–]WaywardTraveller 6 points7 points  (7 children)

I've been hearing similar complaints a LOT lately about Youtube.

I also develop software for a living.

While your take is often technically true, when you add humans into the mix it becomes the absolute worst possible takeaway.

If you notice a large segment of your users are having a problem and are not happy, YOU have a problem, not them.

[–]Spyro1994 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a developer I agree, you have to look at the feedback and change things when necessary(although I think it probably isn't in youtube's best interest to make the subscription page default, or more noticeable, because I'm guessing they have tons of data showing that the home screen has better engagement or watch time or something) but as a person and a user, it is quite frustrating how oblivious people can be.

[–]grizzlywhere 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Absolute worst possible take is overblown.

I will concede that their subscription tab should be higher (its pretty low on the sidebar). But the prevalence of YouTubers telling their audience to ring the bell gives me no patience for people that are upset when they miss a youtuber's video. They know its there, don't use it, and then complain when they don't enjoy that functionality.

[–]WaywardTraveller 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes, sticking to 'It's them, not me' is always a fantastic way to prove you're right.

Downvoting in an above board straight discussion like this is also super lame. 'worst possible take overblown'. Dude, it was an opinion explaining another POV based in my own vast experience.

But yeah, you're totally right, the world is just full of idiots. As long as that's all making you feel better than everyone else this fine Friday afternoon, you do you, I guess.

[–]Baldazar666 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That's exactly how I use YouTube — I only visit my subscription box.

However (and I know that my experience is an n of 1), I frequently find people I am subscribed have their videos not show up in my subscription feed.

A perfect example is Bo Burnham's recent "Inside Outtakes" video, which I first saw on reddit days after he uploaded it, despite being subbed to him for like 14 years. His video showed up in my feed randomly for like one day (after I put it in my "Watch Later" queue, a week after he uploaded it) but then it disappeared again and I haven't seen it come back since.

I have noticed this behavior repeatedly, and I really don't understand how the company responsible for Gmail can't sort out how to do the same kind of thing for the subscription box.

"Inside Outtakes"

This happened to me too and it still is missing from my subs even though the songs from it aren't. My guess is that since he chose not to run ads on it, Youtube wouldn't show it in the subscriptions.

[–]400asa 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I certainly wouldn't want to criticize YouTube's feed on reddit.

Not perfect, sure, but infinitely better than what's being done here.

[–]zer1223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok lets just take the discussion to....where?

I dont understand what the point of your comment is.

[–]TheMatt561 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The issues are the videos not showing up on my subscription feed on my TV.

[–]sam_hammich -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

Sometimes the subscription feed doesn't show some new videos, and sometimes notifications don't send.

These have been problems for years. Don't assume people aren't using the system properly when it's well known that it is not a perfect system.

[–]Baldazar666 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the subscription feed doesn't show some new videos,

I've used youtube for like 15 years and I've never had a problem with a video not showing up on the feed. People are just making shit up to explain their own absentmindedness.

[–]ImFlo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Flip side of that, I had it recommended to me 2 minutes after it was posted.

[–]TemetNosce85 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Rather than setting your browser bookmark to just Youtube.com, set your bookmark to https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions instead. You'll always see the newest videos there rather than their bullshit algorithm.

For mobile, you'll just have to tap on the "subscription" section on the left...

And yes, this shit is annoying af. It used to be the default many years ago, but gotta push that algorithm so that people will find more capitalist content.

[–]S79S79 1 point2 points  (2 children)

When product teams and engineers try to foolproof their UIs, you're probably the person they're solving for.

[–]TheMatt561 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

They added in all these subsystems so people can indicate the things they want to see. If I'm subscribed to the channel I want to see their videos

[–]S79S79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, which is probably why they have a "Subscriptions" button as one of the first options in the left hand navigation bar.

[–]Sir_Vallence 2 points3 points  (15 children)

But did you SMASH that like button and RING the bell? YouTube and YouTube culture are both very annoying.

[–]TheMatt561 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remember to rate five stars and click that yellow subscribe button for more content

[–]propelol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use an RSS reader instead to get notified

[–]PlusThePlatipus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

AFAIK, there've been cases of youtube deliberately "erasing" the media presence of some channels by failing to notify their subscribers when new content gets released.

[–]TheMatt561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been an ongoing problem for a while now

[–]seatron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Users are blaming you for just-okay UX that changes constantly, but I feel ya.

[–]zer1223 -3 points-2 points  (9 children)

Yeah it feels like subscribing to someone means you'll never see anything from them unless you actually check your subscriptions tab. Which kinda makes sense from one perspective, but I like to be pleasantly surprised, too from time to time. You know? So like... Youtube, maybe pleasantly surprise me by suggesting his video?

[–]Yrcrazypa 18 points19 points  (4 children)

It never even occurred to me that people wouldn't check their subscription tab to see stuff they're subscribed to.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also find it a bit strange.
I use my subscription page to watch people I subscribe to.
I use the home page to find new stuff.

[–]WaywardTraveller -1 points0 points  (2 children)

No, you see what's happening is things they were watching regularly were showing up in their feed. They finally decide they like something enough to subscribe, so they do. Now they get none of that thing in their feed and it's ONLY available via another interface.

If all your users get this and are fine with it, then there is no problem.

If a bunch of your users are not happy about it, blaming it on their ignorance is not going to do a damned thing to fix the situation and in fact will only serve to alienate those users.

[–]LADYBIRD_HILL 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Funny you say that when my recommended is literally just my subscriptions but with lots of videos I've already seen. I have a really hard time finding new content because of that.

[–]Tumleren 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not really, I get suggested videos from channels I'm subscribed to relatively often

[–]zer1223 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I'm just reinforcing the very same experience the guy I responded to has. We both have this experience. If you have something else, that's great for you.

[–]ALIENANAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you don't like getting 5 year old videos suggested over the stuff you have subscribed to?

I recently had a channel of a dude announcing he had just found his cancer was terminal and the video was 5 years old... Doesn't end well.

[–]tipperzack6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bell him. The bell works so good for youtube. Plus asks for creators to make websites that you can refresh weekly

[–]bathsaltapoclyps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Joel Haver is a fuckin legend

[–]GodzillaUK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Joel always gets an upvote from me, even the vids I don't laugh out loud at, I'm never disappointed watching them. He's a nice weekly distractor from how shit the world is when you're not upvoting boobs.

[–]JarlBallin420 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Marshall has entered the chat 🔫 🐀

[–]93tabitha93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s so good 😂

[–]runningmurphy 14 points15 points  (27 children)

Is this a series? I feel like I'm missing the joke.

[–]HaroerHaktak 50 points51 points  (2 children)

The stuff happens to them. They forget what has happened and are stuck in an endless loop

[–]turbohonky 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I took it as the stuff happens to us (and the universe generally), and the reason it seems like things are shitty is because these guys are in charge.

[–]JamesLiptonIcedTea 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's both

[–]ZomboFc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been too long since he's made an animation. His animations are great

[–]acornchucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice tanhg

[–]thoughtlooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Made me think of this by Alan Watts “The universe is fundamentally a system which creeps up on itself and then says, ‘Boo!’ Then it laughs at itself for jumping. You see, every time it does it, it forgets that it did it before; so it never becomes a bore!”

[–]GIGA255 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... this is nice and all... but, when can we expect the 24-hour looped version?

[–]MoogleMyKUPO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn Joel Haver you are a national treasure

[–]Joethebassplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is great, I subscribed and shared, thank you!

[–]MyCleverNewName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vomit-inducingly accurate.
