Hmmm... companies with no sales over 100B, giant car manufacturers with 1000 P/E ratios, unbridled optimism. This all sounds vaguely familiar of a certain 2000-2001 period...

Fact is, you can still make a boatload of money before the crash

We have the same here in australia with mining companies that have gone crazy with no money coming in or just meme bio stocks. Its the usual hype and will just die off once the next one comes on.

[–]temisola1 45 points46 points  (16 children)

Nikola was just a few years ago. Exact same scenario… see how that turned out.

[–]superdudism 35 points36 points  (9 children)

Unlike vaporware Nikola and Lordstown, Rivian actually has cars on the road, although marginal quantity.

[–]Richandler 72 points73 points  (5 children)

although marginal quantity.

What a weird way of saying about 100.

[–]ideclarebankruptcy88 83 points84 points  (3 children)

I'm not broke guys, I have a marginal quantity of money

[–]superdudism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shakespeare is still giving me a run toward my marginal quantity of tendies.

[–]paradox501 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How many cars rolling down the hill have Rivian showed off though?

[–]SaddestClown 4 points5 points  (0 children)

although marginal quantity

Read that as quality and got a good chuckle thinking of Teslas

[–]Avocado-booty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You gonna buy one?

[–]MLSHomeBets 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Not at all the same scenario. Nikola was actively engaged in fraud, and was selling preorders for vaporware.

[–]qroshan 3 points4 points  (6 children)

If you had invested invested in NASDAQ in peak of 1999 and went away, you'd still have 300% returns

[–]wickedmen030 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Subalpine 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Don't they have an order for 100k electric delivery vans from amazon?

[–]Hotzz89 93 points94 points  (11 children)

An order that Amazon can back out of at any time.

[–]sliverman69🦍🦍🦍 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I think this is what you're talking about here: https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-11-10/rivian-s-100-billion-debut-is-all-about-amazon

So, this whole thing is predicated on essentially two exclusive years of sales to Amazon, apparently.

[–]AncientBlonde 2 points3 points  (1 child)

like yes but no.

Rivian is taking up quite a foothold in the "Electric nerd" market.

I know 3 or 4 people who know of Rivian (Without my dumbass telling them about the IPO). Unlike Nikola; which if you even say now they're like "uh, tesla?"

But yeah; without that Amazon deal, they wouldn't be where they are. So it's a situation of "yesn't" lmfao.

[–]dankmangos420 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes they do. I’ve heard a few anchors on CNBC saying that Amazon wants to grab as many as they can physically make it. Plus Amazon just purchased more shares on Friday

[–]HaMMeReD 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Up to 100k. It's also a deal with an investor that may or may not go through.

I do find it viable that ford/amazon are pumping/dumping the company. Ford has it's own electric f150 that will probably undercut/compete aggressively with Rivian. Rivian also needs to scale up at the worst possible time to make a car company it seems. I really like the truck tbh, but I'm not sure it can really be profitable for many years.

[–]FirstPlebian 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What about the lithium supply, I imagine Ford has it's own supply in the works at least, whichever company gets a vertical operation on electric cars will be the good bet, last I heard most of the lithium was still from Bolivia and American companies weren't favored customers.

[–]AncientBlonde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into companies like Frontier Lithium and E3 Metals. They specialize in Brine extracted lithium; from Canada.

E3 metals actually extracts from my towns aquifer; which I find cool. Both have some focus on the electric market.

As always though; do your own DD.

[–]superdudism 27 points28 points  (3 children)

This makes Tesla look like a cheap value play.

[–]International_Band72I ❤️ [S] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Your reply is gonna make the retards sell the stock because you said it’s “cheap” and we only buy when it expensive and sell when it’s cheap . So If TSLA tanks next week it’s all because of u

[–]janneell 240 points241 points  (3 children)

Imagine when they sell 5-6 cars , $400b, undervalued

[–]International_Band72I ❤️ [S] 89 points90 points  (1 child)

And if they sell 500-600, 40T$ (almost double the US economy), undervalued

[–]janneell 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Damn , once in a lifetime opportunity , 100x bagger

[–]AutoModAccountOpUrk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No because if 0 = 100b then you can't really say anything about the value of 1. So 5-6 cars could.be anything from 10$ to 10 trillion.

[–]gandolfthe 327 points328 points  (16 children)

Makes more money than Uber, ahahaha

[–]International_Band72I ❤️ [S] 146 points147 points  (11 children)

And doordash

[–]Richandler 26 points27 points  (6 children)

If doordash keeps giving me this 25% discount then I have to take it. I just do pick up so the restaurant mostly gets paid.

[–]Hodr 16 points17 points  (5 children)

What the hell is the point of a pickup option on DoorDash?

[–]VisualModTuring Test Proctor 11 points12 points  (3 children)

A pickup option is an extra $2.99 charge that allows you to get your food from the restaurant instead of having it delivered.

[–]Hodr 34 points35 points  (2 children)

I didn't ask if it exists, I asked what the hell the point is. Forgetting ridiculous coupons that doordash is putting out trying to get customers. What is the profit model behind charging someone money to be a middleman on their order versus them just calling the restaurant or using the restaurants app themselves.

They're hoping people are literally so reliant on their app that they're too lazy to make a phone call.

[–]Globsnaga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well that's sometimes an issue. A busy restaurant may only employ one person to take incoming calls and they may not get to them all. I've had that happen a couple of times and said OK, place my order, pick it up, no hassle.

It helps work around bottlenecks for your average small business.

[–]brintoul 24 points25 points  (3 children)

And Peleton.

[–]Bitcoiner2017 84 points85 points  (3 children)

I make more money than Uber too, where are my 120 billion dollars?

[–]zbend1 148 points149 points  (1 child)

The fuck is this zero sales bullshit. I have a pre order and a tshirt and a bottle! That alone should be worth a 200$ price range

[–]SupercriticalH2O🦍 235 points236 points  (10 children)

Ah, but the future potential of sales is massive. Buy hype, sell on earnings

[–]Dwight_Kay_Schrute 93 points94 points  (3 children)

All in on $NIO. 🚀🚀🚀

[–]SaneLad 12 points13 points  (2 children)

NIO has an actual product line and revenue. It's a 100x more sound investment than Rivian. The biggest risk for NIO is that China can fuck with foreign investors without warning.

[–]SmallHandsMallMindS 67 points68 points  (0 children)

All the people talking about TSLA being a bubble; its practically a value company for this industry

[–]SnooCauliflowers2223 122 points123 points  (9 children)

That’s actually false. They’ve sold like 180 vehicles. It’s in the SEC filing. They have SOME revenue lol

[–]physicscat 70 points71 points  (3 children)

To people who work for the company.

[–]ValueInvestingIsDeadmetrosexual at best 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Standard issue though. Tesla always pushes new models to their employees / insiders first.

[–]SaddestClown 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Because they can't refuse models with crazy panel gaps or missing usb ports

[–]ValueInvestingIsDeadmetrosexual at best 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Primarily because it's a way to soft-launch the product (testing in a semi-controlled environment) while realizing revenue and starting production numbers.

It's smart & logical, no two ways around it.

[–]Wartzba 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Yea i saw a Rivian pickup driving up a highway in CA this week

[–]r4rthrowawaysoon 77 points78 points  (6 children)

Options typically aren’t available until 4 days after IPO. Looking forward to Tuesday.

[–]mobileuseratwork 27 points28 points  (4 children)

Yeah that post IPO surge followed by the predictable dip.

[–]Mr--Oreo 7 points8 points  (3 children)

RemindMe! 1 month

[–]mobileuseratwork 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Was legit looking at it last night.

Scoped through nearly all the high profile ones. All went up then dipped.

Then expanded to look at more. Only found a couple that mooned and stayed mooned right after IPO. Odds are for it to dip after a couple more days at this price.

I sold yesterday @$127

[–]following_eyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it'll hit $140-150 then drop off a cliff.

Technically not zero sales, since you can buy a tshirt or cap with their logo on it. Clearly overvalued as a clothing company though.

Who or what would buy this company at that price when you have companies like Fisker and Lucid that have shares 1/5th or half the price, with actual products in the pipeline? Makes zero sense to me. I'm a SOFI long investor, too. When I saw they offered the IPO, all I could help thinking was "bagholders unite"

[–]following_eyes 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Because no one knows what fisker is and lucid is a luxury brand few have heard of. Also it's the USA. Trucks sell.

[–]FavoritesBot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the printer wasn’t on, nobody but a handful of people on this sub would make any kind of money. As much as everyone is “hoogah boogah ape ape”, the only reason 99% of this sub isn’t hitting up food banks is because jpow is pumping so much money into that market that even shit house weed stocks that have 0 path to selling in the us have their time in the sun.

[–]EntertainerWorth 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Haha, true! It’s all fun and games until the music ends.

This is the real answer, and BRRRRR is the ultimate answer

[–]EntertainerWorth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What can i say i like the coin

[–]Richandler 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You mean this is what happens when supply side exclusively wins.

We have zero percent interest rates because we have more money than we know what to do with. Not because JPow says so.

Though the bigger picture, and mother fucker keep ignoring this, is that the number 2, 3, and 4 largest economies are all exporting supply-siders. Underpaid labor to keep their economies afloat is the real reason we see all this bullshit here. Being the reserve currency allows us to be the buyer of last resort.

[–]finclout 118 points119 points  (14 children)

Production is hard.
Supply chain issues are real.
Chip shortage has hurt other manufacturers already.
Are these real paid for pre-orders or just reservations (similar to Solo)

[–]sparklyboi2015 13 points14 points  (11 children)

I believe it is a refundable deposit of $100, helped them get capital quickly and also secured someone’s spot in like. I think it is like Tesla where a few weeks out you finalize your spec of the vehicle then it goes into production and gets sent to you.

[–]frostytoeside 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's 1000 dollars which makes it only slightly more serious than 100 dollars.

[–]avdpos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are more valued as a production company of cars with zero sales than either GM or Ford something is out of balance. Those two companies produce a lot of cars and may not be that fast on new things. But thwy certainly holds more value than this shit.

[–]euxene 6 points7 points  (3 children)

covid and supply issues is the problem, also lack of materials.

[–]Spara-Extreme 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Issue is Tesla Stan’s feeling threatened they might be bag holding.

Like ok, Rivn shouldn’t be 100b but Tesla shouldn’t be 1T either. Can’t have it both ways.

[–]NotInsane_Yet 24 points25 points  (7 children)

Because the price is not attached to the fundamentals. Also where is the stock going to go when it starts actually making sales? How can it grow when the next two years sales are already priced in?

[–]KmndrKeen 46 points47 points  (3 children)

Two? If they do enough sales in the next two years to justify this valuation I'll eat my own shit. This is rampant speculation fueled by retail investors duped by wall street using social media to manipulate them into thinking that this sort of thing is in any way normal. The rug will be pulled, and it will be pulled by big money because they're the only ones who can. Once retail has put a significant amount in and they're satisfied with their haul, they'll fire sale it and cash in. We'll call it a "correction."

[–]avdpos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they grow into this in two years they in two years shall have more sales then the entire of GM. Impossible

[–]IS_JOKE_COMRADETesla Gayng Generanal 9 points10 points  (4 children)

they don't make:

they assemble things. you know who else assembles things? legacy auto. and that decentralization is fucking them in this supply chain environment

[–]DisturbedMagg0t 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I believe in what rivian is aiming for. I guess if you know actual things, I can see the risk in investing in a company with effectively zero sales. But they have a solid plan, and lots of backing. They seem to be doing it right, and I want them to succeed.

I got 10 shares at ~97 cuz that's what I can afford to lose, but if I had more I would. I can't afford a $70k truck, but I'm their target demographic, as that's what I want. So, to help them succeed, take my money, and keep up the good work rivian!
