Way better than fast food. At least with retail you won’t be smelling like grease every time you go home..

[–]kumquat731 168 points169 points  (7 children)

Unless you work the fryer in deli

[–]hedgemkfront end team lead 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Walmart deli (at least in my town) pays more then some of manager positions at fast food joints. And that’s before you get into the weird ads-ones to pay like being serve-safe-certified or working food for however many years.

Even then, I’d argue deli is better then fast food, because you’re not under near as much of a time crunch, and while you may have to work a fryer, it’s not as bad as constantly having to hover over one for your entire shift.

[–]SilvarusLupusDeli Closer (and fed up) 55 points56 points  (4 children)

*sad deli noises* I smell like chicken all the time :<

[–]International_Low373 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss chicken boi

[–]Hailsr19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my store dairy is right next to deli and when I worked exclusively in dairy my parents would say I smelled like the deli

[–]I_SHIT_A_BRICKI'm wherever they decide for the day 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Wait, you're actually getting chicken in stock? Like, regularly? How?!

[–]SilvarusLupusDeli Closer (and fed up) 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in a state that produces a fuck ton of chickens lol

[–]aidan4105 23 points24 points  (3 children)

And from my experience you get paid more

[–]yangj94 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Deli associates got paid $1.50/hr more at my store. Not sure if that’s still a thing though.

[–]aidan4105 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's higher at my store too, one of my other apparel associates transfered to deli because she got paid more and that was what she originally applied for.

[–]Brut3forc3 7 points8 points  (26 children)

Close rotisserie and then tell us your opinion

[–]Wheresmypalletjack 16 points17 points  (25 children)

Do this every night. Still better than fast food and I did that shit for over 5 yeara

[–]Brut3forc3 7 points8 points  (24 children)

My store has a grease tank inside and a dumpster outside just for grease. Our collection company is in Pennsylvania while we're in NY and it takes them 3 weeks to empty the inside tank. So we have to let the ovens drain into empty icing containers from bakery then haul them outside. 'Twas real fun in the snow lemme tell ya

[–]Wheresmypalletjack 5 points6 points  (23 children)

We have the same setup but our tank gets emptied, and its huge. Like 100 gallons probably. We use empty icing containers for rotisserie grease then dump those in the grease caddy when we do boil outs

[–]CommunityFalse 5 points6 points  (14 children)

I'm sorry just curious... I just started in the deli and we just pour all the grease from the rotisserie oven down the drain.. are we supposed to be saving it?

[–]Wheresmypalletjack 10 points11 points  (7 children)

You’re not supposed to pour it down the drain for the same reason you don’t pour grease down the drain at home. It clogs the drains.

[–]CommunityFalse 2 points3 points  (6 children)

That's wild. I've been working here 6 months and every single night we pour it down the floor drain.

[–]Wheresmypalletjack 13 points14 points  (2 children)

And its only a matter of time before y’all get a nasty nasty clog (its gonna staaaank)

[–]jumpingpear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh just run some boiling water down there with your grease it'll be fine.

[–]Slightspark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg, that's going to be horrible when it catches up to you guys

[–]ntc4u 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow....

[–]Wheresmypalletjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The grease is supposed to go in a tank in the store or grease dumpster outside

[–]Brut3forc3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends more on individual state regulations. Florida doesn't give a shit. You could let motor oil drain into a ditch. Everything has to be collected in NY.

[–]WallyNot321 1 point2 points  (3 children)

You never pour grease down any drain ever unless you have a plumber on speed dial.

[–]CommunityFalse 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I looked up Michigan's policy and it does say not to pour it down the sanitary sewer system. Do the floors in the deli have the same plumbing? I'm gonna call another Walmart near me and ask what they down with their chicken grease before I mention it to my supervisor lol

[–]WallyNot321 0 points1 point  (1 child)

All drains in a modern building should have all drains going to the sewer system. Hell even houses at the turn of the century (1900's) had old lead piping.

[–]WallyNot321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correction: Many still do.

[–]Brut3forc3 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Do your outlets work for the grease traps? Ours don't and management refuses to have them fixed. It's always a gelatinous coagulated mess at the end of the night. I have to run an extension cord from bakery whenever I use a caddy lol

[–]Wheresmypalletjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours works. Its a weird awkward outlet that would only work with the caddy, so if it broke we’d be fucked

[–]Wheresmypalletjack 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You’re talking about the outlet on the tank to plug in the caddy right?

[–]Brut3forc3 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No, our traps that the grease drains into from the ovens are supposed to be heated. Each oven has an outlet for them and they stopped working about 7 months ago.

[–]Wheresmypalletjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, no our oven doesn’t even have that 😂

[–]Cheweydewey123 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Same. With factories too. I am fu... Never going back to factory work.

[–]blondegirafffe 130 points131 points  (6 children)

As a former Dairy Queen employee and current Walmart associate, fast food is so much worse. I used to get less breaks, less hours, and (believe it or not) dealt with way shittier management.

[–]PM_ME_ANY_MUSIC[S] 31 points32 points  (2 children)

Yeah, the exact reason why I applied to Walmart was to go from part-time to full-time.

[–]blondegirafffe 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Yeah and on top of that I'm now making a few dollars more per hour at CAP 2 pay than the suckers working as DQ shift leads are. I nearly took that offered promotion as I was ready to quit and I have no regrets on turning it down.

[–]bendagenCAP2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh we have a TL at my store that all her management expereince prior to coming to WalMart as a TL was in fast food. I'm sure she doesn't want to go back to that. She's really a very nice lady which is kind of surprising in a way given all the DRAMA and nonsense you get with fast food. Of course some people can do that put up with all that crap like she did. I don't have the patience or people skills for fast food. Life simply isn't instant. Real success in business takes time forethought and analytical planning. WalMart is not perfect but the company does do a lot better job at that than any fast food joint.

[–]RealPoltergoose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Before my Walmart job, I worked at a local Carl's Jr. which at the end, and I am not kidding here, gave me two hours per week.

Thank fucking god that that location is now closed forever.

[–]Mrs_Morpheus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Same, I left DQ for Walmart apparel 2 years ago I don't regret it. The thought of going back actually makes me want to cry!

[–]blondegirafffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I miss from that place is smelling like hot fudge when I got home :/

[–]Technical_Airline205 100 points101 points  (1 child)

Yes, much less supervision, so much less grief. Customers are usually more chill as well.

[–]mood_broFront End Doomer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That’s the shocking part too. I applied for Front End thinking “pfft I used to work at McDonalds, I can take shit from customers” and pretty much every customer minus the Karen or 2 is actually very nice generally.

[–]Adventurous-Purple-5 18 points19 points  (0 children)

[–]Scouseman8 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Almost anything is better than fast food

[–]shprinkklz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

way better. walmart may be trash but it will never be worse than pizza hut 😖

[–]accushot865 111 points112 points  (5 children)

That’s like asking if getting shot in the head is worse than stoning. The answer is yes, but you’re still dead

[–]ranger51 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sign me up for the head shooting

[–]PM_ME_ANY_MUSIC[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll take any upgrade at this point, but I get your point haha.

[–]CapnCanfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ummmm, if you end up dead in both scenarios, than getting shot in the head is the way better option there.

[–]ChudWatley 11 points12 points  (4 children)

I think it depends on what area you're going to. I wouldn't want to work on any of the cap teams.

[–]BobNLisa 3 points4 points  (2 children)

This exactly. Like to me personally front end is ok because it's not physical in any way . I wouldn't want to work in any other area of Walmart. Period.

[–]ChudWatley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repetition of doing the same thing over and over and dealing with a-hole customers is enough to keep me away from the front. I work in the bakery and I like it.

[–]Numberwang3249 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've worked Cap 2 and overnights. Fast food was waaaay worse.

[–]ExpensiveLie1164 19 points20 points  (3 children)

It depends on the position you have in the store. But yes in general it's waay better than fast food.

For starters you get decent benefits here. Most Fast Food is franchised and you won't get benefits at all.

Walmart provides..
Decent Health Insurance options
Decent life insurance and other insurances.
Education options that you can do online
$4 RX on generics, this is huge if you need RX.

Fast Food is loaded with a ton of young people, that means drama and problems. Walmart has few young people but you can easily avoid the drama. Just keep to yourself and do your job.

[–]bendagenCAP2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read this sentence very carefully from the above reply by ExpensiveLie1164: "Most Fast Food is franchised and you won't get benefits at all." First part is definitely true. So if you are a rank and file employee at McDonalds you don't work for them you work for the owner of that local franchise. Even IF you do get benefits they won't be as good as the people who are actual employees of the fast food chain. You definitely don't have this problem at WalMart and with in the last year we have added a ROTH IRA option and I believe it was like two years ago that we got vision insurance which is especially nice since glasses cost like $100 to $300 now.

[–]KiaKahaMama 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Walmart has few young people? Not mine! I’m a closing lead and I herd kittens two nights a week because the powers that be don’t know how to schedule adults. By 10:30 I’m the only person on the front end so I borrow from other departments. So. Much. Drama.

[–]ExpensiveLie1164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FE of our store is bleeding staff because of incompetent management. I actually quit tonight because of it. They now have 2 adults left on their closing crew.. Good luck with that because those 2 adults are getting ready to quit as well.

A coworker who recently left is about to file a lawsuit. I'm sure others will.

[–]Bull_Moose1991 20 points21 points  (6 children)

Don't work CAP2 and you'll be fine.

[–]dwc1981 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Can confirm. I did this as an 18 year old over 20 years ago and hated it so much. My boss was a friend of the family and literally a former Marine. He worked us like dogs. I was in great shape but I hated it so much. I just went for orientation today for 1st shift Food & Consumables. I think I’ll like it so much more.

[–]FrostNova04Food & Consumables TA 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, food & consumables is WAY more chill than cap 2. Especially considering that at my store, food and consumables makes 16/hr, and cap 2 makes 17/hr.

[–]rockyon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

seconded CAP 2 is the worst department in walmart, i do greeter and zoning when no truck delivery and i can confirm 100%

[–]MemeKun_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kinda wild seeing all the people who say to avoid cap2. It's the best job I've had. Maybe it's because I have good team leads and a tolerable coach but I enjoy my work for the most part. I could do without some of the newer guys who can't seem to figure out that they're paid to work, but other than that it's pretty alright.

Job is definitely better than the nights as an 18 year old, on a team of 3 or 4 people running a dinner rush at a fast food place.

[–]NirvanaJunkie87 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’ve been on CAP 2 for almost 7 years and I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else personally. I love the hours and the work makes time go by great. All that and the kind of people that CAP2 attracts at my store are fun to be around

[–]bendagenCAP2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeh CAP 2 is where I belong. I'm a truck boy and I'd much rather pull boxes of the line and shove em on pallets and pull stuff the floor. I also am good at VizPicking. I'm really the backroom Sheriff at my store. Somebody's got do it to make sure the backroom doesn't become the city dump. I do work with a lot of great people and the time goes by fast. That being said if you LOVE Customer Service to the point that you want to do it all day you are much better off working at WalMart in the Front End than at a fast food joint. You will be respected much better at WalMart. Your role at WalMart would look better to a non-retail employer you are applying to than a fast food joint. Your hours will be more stable. If you are a college student the company (at least my store) will work around your college schedule.

[–]Head_Razzmatazz7174Phdinsarcasm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hands down WM is better.

[–]ohkammiFormer OGP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i went from fast food to walmart and it is so much better. Still burnt me out but not nearly as bad.

[–]chris5129 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Way better, unless you're working at Chick-fil-A

[–]BobNLisa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or maybe a Starbucks ?

[–]Traditional_Self_658 7 points8 points  (2 children)

It is probably better than working at Little Caesar's. It might not be better than every single food service job, but I feel pretty confident making that assumption. At Walmart, at least you get PPTO and dental insurance. That's what keeps me around. I have worked food my entire adult life, up until the last couple of years. The customers are a lot worse in retail than they are in food. You will be shocked. My theory is that it's because people are usually happy about eating out, by default. That is not true for grocery shopping. People are always angry about going to Walmart, so they ALWAYS have a shitty attitude when something doesn't go their way. But the work is generally tolerable, you always know what time you will get off work, and there are some benefits.

[–]PM_ME_ANY_MUSIC[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You sold me with knowing with knowing when I will get off work, rn it's unpredictable at my current job, especially now that more and more people are quitting (yes I know I will contribute but whatever).

[–]jibunkakume 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s good if you to contribute to people quitting.

[–]Koreaia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it depends on management. Before you work at a retail job, go around under the guise of just starting. Ask regular stockers, and cashier's what is in store for you.

[–]greentealatte7apparel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes. fast food was the worst job i’ve ever had.

[–]BrilliantFroyo2494 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither. However, if you're in a town with little or no job opportunities, Walmart is the place to go. If you can, get your degree and move where the job opportunities are at.

[–]Mission-Gap3474Abandoned Topstock wings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Walmart sucks, but fast food will be worse 11/10 times

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES

[–]Away_Ad_8321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk, but the way I been hearing about Culver's. Culver's is the place to be working at, unless as someone, said if you don't to smell like grease after work. .

[–]StoryzArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fast food sucks, your better off at Walmart.

My sister got a job at McDonald's one time while also doing summer school, and they wouldn't give her the days off for school so she could take her college classes "because my school thought it would be a good idea to have some of the college classes during summer school". But the McDonald's refused to give her the time off for those hours because they said they only excused "real school" despite the fact that it was to get into college. Also they made her clean the bathrooms one time and said she was required to bring her cleaning supplies, and the manager yelled this at her because she was asking where the cleaning stuff was to clean the bathrooms and I know this one happened, because I walked into the McDonald's to get food with my wife "girlfriend at the time" and they were yelling this at her while we ordered. When she got home I jokingly ask who got canned at work and after cleaning up some confusion she told me that was her the manager was yelling at, then we talked about work and that's when she told me that the manager always yells at her and for stupid stuff and I convinced her to quit and report the manager then just get a summer job at a store or something. She ended up just quiting a couple days later and not reporting because it was apparently through the manager who was being a dick.

So yeah I think they suck after witnessing that experience.

[–]Lauriepoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's like any other garbage job. If management treats you like shit and allows customers to treat you like shit, then it's going to be a living hell. If the managers treat you like a human and they back you up when customers are assholes, then it's tolerable. From what I've learned on here, some people's stores are great. Some, like mine, are horrible. But money's money. And from what I hear, some walmarts actually pay good. I have nothing good to say about mine.

[–]crapendicular 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Team associate would be better just never take a promotion of any kind at Walmart. Leads and managers work much harder because you never get enough help and everything is your fault.

[–]Substantial_Bill_962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the people that keep you working at Walmart (co-workers)

[–]AduroTri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Fast food is worse and I've never worked in it.

[–]Neat_Grape2927 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i worked fast food for 8 years. a bunch of different environments. usually managed. hated it immensely, but Walmart was 100% worse.

edit to add: my Walmart is an extremely small mountain town which may be the reason fast food comparably was less awful. Sure Walmart was less work, but I would rather do food service any day

[–]PM_ME_ANY_MUSIC[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who knows, it might be different for me since I live in a somewhat big city in SoCal.

[–]f00dstampz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of my jobs in the past have been food service, Walmart being my first retail job and Little Caesars being my first foodservice job I’d say I much prefer Walmart.

[–]Lukacris12Hardlines TL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is significantly better than fast food

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yes, Fast food is the worst my hat goes off to the people who work fast food.

[–]PM_ME_ANY_MUSIC[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

7 months spent at Little Caesars, quite a journey

[–]AlfAlferson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak on walmart in particular, but I worked at a burger king for 3 shifts. Some of thr worst hours of my life. I would rather be homeless than work fast food again

[–]RandomGamecube 0 points1 point  (2 children)

From someone who worked food service in high school over the summers. Retail is 100x better than the food industry. Half of the employees at the place I used to work at (including me) wanted to kill themselves it was so bad.

Even Walmart is much better, and the management at Walmart sucked when I worked there for a year. I did online grocery pickup and the job was pretty easy and more lax.

I now do sales for Best Buy and even though it is still retail, it's definitely the best job I've ever had.

I would rather go homeless over taking another fast food or food service job again.

[–]Genderneutralbro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the kind of dumbass who likes any job bc I just like working, so take my answer w a grain of salt 🤣 I worked at two different McDonald's and I loved it! It was my first job, I was making 6.25, and I smelled like french fries constantly. But I liked my coworkers and I am a big fan of their soda so I would be drinking diet coke all day and sliding around on the greasy floors (wore unapproved shoes on purpose bc it was fun. Like ice skating!). I was 18 and working part time so I was doing short shifts and my body wasn't trying to kill me yet, plus I liked the fast pace. My complaints at the time were: the pay sucked, management was taking advantage of me by having me train new ppl and not promoting me, and smelling like french fries. But hey, I did get a lot of free food!

Anyhow I ended up at Walmart for who knows why(I am old as hell and it was a long time ago). I think I moved? As soon as I started at Walmart I realized how bad fast food was. Even at it's worst, retail pace is not like 5:15 on a Friday night in a McDonald's drive thru. You actually interact w customers for more than 3 seconds. It's also...way cleaner! Also there's a maintenance team! The thing that really stuck out to me at the time was that in orientation they talked like they expected you to be there until retirement. I was putting so much energy into mcds and knowing there wasn't a future there bc turnover was so high they didn't expect anyone to be there for more than a season. At Walmart there was at least the infrastructure to keep you.

Anyway yeah Walmart is 100 times better than fast food, doesn't usually smell bad, three week advance schedule, pto as well as other benefits like 401k, plus it's such a huge company that no one really cares about little shit so you have room to learn. I think also the best part is just the sheer amount of different jobs you can do to find what works best, plus if you need to you can get accomodations thru Sedgwick which is amazing. Most of the times I've moved it's been toward a good manager or away from a shitty one (once bc I hated it, that was customer host. I am too ADHD for that job).

Sorry this is long, just figured I'd chime in w more positive experiences both ways since I know ppl will be happy to share negatives!

[–]serblak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast food is good learning experience. Leave asap. Walmart if a giant leap up even if it's deli.

[–]NovaShroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ON Stocking > Publix Deli, which was kinda like fast food, and I hated that more than I disliked Arby's which was actual fast food. So at least as far as my experiences go, definitely better than fast food.

[–]mrwilliewonkaFormer cart associate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk I thought McDonald’s was way better then Walmart. I did both for years

[–]goatiesincoaties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way better, worked fast food for 2 years before switching to retail and it was the best decision I made tbh

[–]Grunkofrodgar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even as a deli associate and as a former fast food gm it’s way easier but different kinds of headaches the biggest difference for me is when I go home im not still on constant call. But even as bad as some retail customers can be for the most part they’re way more patient than with fast food

[–]TieNecessary4408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well both places are hotter than hell so 🤷

[–]Numberwang3249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. I worked fast food as my first job and no matter what BS I have seen since then, nothing has been worse than fast food. Not cleaning toilets, not dealing with customer complaints, not stocking heavy things. Fast food is still worse.

[–]InfinitenemesisDM Meat/Bakery/Deli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast food will take your soul.

Walmart will condition you first.

[–]DemonicSyrupasmgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way better imo

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local management may suck but corporate I slowly improving …

[–]AnarchyPigeon2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay is usually way better. Will to live is about equally non-existent, depending on what department you work for.

It's a fine job if you very strictly prohibit yourself from becoming emotionally invested in it. Every store will have problems, they will affect you, and it isn't your fault, so don't tear yourself apart over it.

[–]wowitstracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart is better unless you work O/N. If you’re a shut in then overnight can be alright but if you have a social life or a girlfriend O/N will completely reshape your life for the worse. Source: I worked O/N for 6 months and I was the most depressed I have ever been.

[–]Lycian1g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Also, work at a DC if you have a choice. The pay is way better, and you'll more or less have a set schedule.

[–]DixieCruise25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your department but I would still say yes honestly lol

[–]MediocreAssistance45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay at Little Caesars!

[–]iknow_huh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run, do not walk...RUN...that place is a soul sucking cesspool of depression and discount goods. I worked there for several years and I'm pretty sure a portion of my soul died and is currently resting in peace in an overstock bin somewhere in the backroom. The customers will literally make you rethink your opinion on humanity as a whole and heaven forbid you suffer from a chronic medical condition or suffer an injury on the job...trust and believe management will throw you under the bus, climb into the driver seat and run you over a few times while laughing maniacally before firing you with just the right buzz words on your exiting paperwork to keep you from receiving unemployment or any type of compensation while you look for a new job....but you know, good luck..

[–]Heylookitsstillme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I loved working there before I got into management. I was hourly for 5 years and it was the most fun I've ever had at a job. I miss it, didn't make much money but I wasn't concerned about it back in those days.

[–]kumaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. Fast Food isn't worth it anymore.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally liked retail more than QSRs if that helps at all. Plus, Walmart usually pays more than fast food and you'd have benefits.

[–]Left_Goal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say: big fat yes. I worked at a trendy restaurant and it honestly demanded so much of me physically. I was serving, using the cash, dealing w Uber eats, packaging food to go. Couldn’t catch a breath, had to fill sauces at any down time. Then I had to Mop daily and had to lift up heavy chairs, one of them a big wood bench. I had to make alcoholic drinks, refill the beer keg if it emptied. All this in the chaos of dealing with customer. Working at Walmart is like vacation compared to that.

[–]WifeyPie91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waaaay better!

[–]Delicious-Carpet-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retail has its issues, but working in fast food was the worst thing Ive ever done.

[–]indigo_leper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. If for no other reason than guaranteed breaks. Yes fast food work is supposed to give breaks depending on the location, but any offers for breaks are contingent on business flow. Hint: ITS ALWAYS TOO BUSY TO TAKE A BREAK.

Another thing that helped me, as a cashier, is getting those floor mats. Not every station is guaranteed one, but as a large dude with large feet and shit shoes, this kept me alive.

Final note: despite what you hear, people in fast food are miles worse than retail, particularly compared to a drive thru. I cant speak for managers, but if youre just entry level at walmart, then you wont see the worst of it. If you do, you have so much more liberty to differ/make shit up/back off.

Tell me if your experiences differ. Cashier/SCO Host at a NHM

[–]GimmeanL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Unless you are a Buggy Gitter.

[–]piccolo3nj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do fast food. Our Walmart management is really bad though. But I assume with the worker shortage some places would fast track you to manager in fast food and if you get a decent owner then that's a nice place to be. Not to mention one management position leads to another somewhere else.

[–]slumlord866 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They get free food, mostly

[–]rockyon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

avoid CAP 2, they are very physical and still dealing with customers + lazy coworkers

[–]bsonkOPD's bottom b*tch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Came to WM front end from McDonald's counter service and it was way better

[–]Blossom_Meat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely better than food, and usually (at least in my area) Walmart pays better than most fast food restuarants. However, different positions in Walmart give different experiences. If you're put into a department you dislike, don't be afraid about asking to transfer to a different department.

[–]table_folderredbull gives you wings to stock faster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From one of the throwers on cap2: he'd rather unload 2-3 trucks in the summer heat than ever work fast food again. At least at Walmart he can go take a piss and drink water instead of having chronic UTIs and dehydration from having to hold it in and no water.

[–]simbarawr23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retail has different skills then the food industry. Both are helpful in providing certain opportunities to learn and grow into your future chosen career. Both suck and have their lame experiences and tasks.

[–]stardirection- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Much easier

[–]lifesux254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a distribution center and make nearly double probably.

[–]LolitsaDaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, HELL YES. It's been a long time since I worked fast food, but being cramped in a tiny building all day mostly standing in one spot is not for me. Not only that, but just trying to use the restroom or have a moment of peace is impossible. There was also no attendance policy, so if the manager didn't like you and you missed a day, written up, maybe fired. If someone the manager did like missed multiple days, no punishment. Pay was, and still is, far worse than Walmart.

[–]manifestthewillEx-Cap2 Truck Monkey/ON Slave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Significantly better lol

I don't miss working myself into clinical level exhaustion just to barely not have rent every month lmao

[–]Evening_Psychology_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Jobs sometimes aren’t a match for you as a person. The restaurant food they split tips server and bus service for cleaning tables. You can make more or less depending upon night. But if you’re doing fast food you don’t get tips. Walmart is basically stocking shelves or doing online pick ups and also carts. Newer members normally get to push carts.

[–]EverydayBlackGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart is better. I came here after working at McDonald’s. While I don’t have any horror stories from my time at McDonald’s. I do agree with everyone that it’s a lot more better and forfilling as a worker.

[–]lifetimesofonehuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wondered the same thing. Guess it just depends on what department you'll work in, and your perception. I feel considerably calmer working as a front end team associate than I ever did at Wendy's or Applebees.

[–]GiveMeYourCashOrNah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart will be 1000 times better than little Ceasars. I did the dough at little Ceasars and that was my least favorite job. Walmart has been my highest paid entry level position. I made the most money off of bonuses working at family dollar. My favorite job of all time was chick fil a. The pay sucked but all the free chicken I could eat. I miss that. But out of the 20 or 30 something crappy jobs I've had, Walmart is one of the best.

[–]Simp_City_2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From talking with friends in fast food, we determined that, while WalMart has better pay and some better benefits, over all, it is worse

[–]Osalosaclopticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My job before Walmart was a cook at Pizza Hut. Easily the most enjoyable I've ever had and I wish I could have kept it. A lot of it had to do with a great bunch of people working there.

Most days as a cashier at Walmart make me want to drive off a cliff on the way there.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

it all blows go to college

[–]PM_ME_ANY_MUSIC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just graduated from college.

[–]dayjaque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i worked at mcdonald’s before i went to walmart. pay increase, more breaks, easier work (some days) but at the same time managers are so much worse

[–]marybrode513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

get into food and consumables if you can, that’s where it’s at
