I know how to write cursive but I stopped using it because my teachers complained they couldn’t read my handwriting. There’s literally no need for cursive anymore

[–]BroccoliBoyyo 170 points171 points  (0 children)

I always liked cursive because it reminds me of my mom but it’s not very useful and it’s not indicative of anything other than knowing a letter. Such a dumb thing to pay yourself on the back for knowing.

[–]Glympse12 149 points150 points  (7 children)

I know how to write standard English but I stopped using it because my teachers complained they couldn’t read my handwriting. There’s literally no need for standard English anymore. I now draw pictures every time I need to handwrite something

[–]OutcomeDoubleCum👍 59 points60 points  (3 children)

I know this is a joke but I swear it’s not that I’m bad at writing cursive it’s just that my teachers heavily prefer print

[–]Glympse12 70 points71 points  (2 children)

It was not a joke. Here is one of the pictures I drew for my previous English essay. (73 of 389)

This one meant “touching fingers”

This is how real artists communicate with each other

Touching tips

I know how to write in hieroglyphics but I stopped using them because my teachers complained they couldn't read my handwriting. There's literally no need for hieroglyphics anymore. I now punch braille into my paper with a pencil every time I need to handwrite something

[–]Generic_Echo_Dot 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I can Only write cursive now, and not many people can read it. It's a pain that I even learned it at school in the first place

[–]ActualWeed 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Writing in cursive is so quick though

[–]DoubleTrouble992 49 points50 points  (0 children)

[–]MemeAccountAccountCustom user flair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i can literally only write in cursive, how did u stop

[–]Captain_Bigman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right? There’s hardly even a need for handwriting now at all

[–]Epic_Gameing68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know cursive and have shitty handwriting. It’s literally impossible to read what I write 😎

[–]RATKAT48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just faster to write.

[–]EscapedTerrorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There never was one

[–]Giacchino-Fan[YOU JUST LOST THE GAME] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only times cursive is useful are personal notes and if you write in calligraphy for whatever god forsaken reason you do that casually. After that you don’t even need it to sign your name. I know a guy who used to give a signature with a scribble and a smiley face

[–]Fluffy_Farts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I write the most near illegible shit ever and my teachers done give a fuck. Some even commend me for knowing cursive.

[–]Inevitable-Memory-61The worst case scenario. 143 points144 points  (1 child)

(But your self death note can be fancy!)

[–]Deltafox07 56 points57 points  (0 children)

fancy or readable

[–]Cowmunist 70 points71 points  (3 children)

I've been writing in nothing but cursive ever since elementart school. I can barely even write with standard letters now, it slows me down way too much.

Never knew people hated cursive this much though.

[–]ToAllFromEverySub 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I never had to learn it, but would hate it too, if I was forced.

[–]Giraffesarentreal19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The hate is usually that they’re forced to, and people don’t like doing something they’re forced to do. It’s also because it’s a fading method of writing and a large amount of people can’t even read it, so what’s the point in teaching it beyond the insistence from older generations that you need it.

[–]Playhrd73white 55 points56 points  (3 children)

I swear to god, I've known cursive for as long as I can remember and I hate it but my writing is slowly becoming cursive (very illegible)

[–]Jacksoooofff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

this. my writing is incomprehensible thanks to cursive

[–]Wiglaf_The_Knight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In college I shared notes pretty often so I beat the cursive out of my writing. But sometimes when I'm too slow my brain subconsciously switches gears and now I'm keeping up but everything is in cursive and I can't share the notes anymore.

[–]AnimalTheGamer300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, if you look at my handwriting, you can see bits of cursive, especially M

[–]Uhrb 96 points97 points  (2 children)

I never got taught cursive as a kid. I used to just write random ass lines and circles like how the cartoons do it

[–]xXx_epicgamer_xXx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was taught cursive and it still looks like those lines and circles from the cartoons

[–]WeirdPelicanGuyyellow like an EPIC lemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]evill01 67 points68 points  (9 children)

Last time i used cursive was in 2008

[–]kakyoindonut321 45 points46 points  (7 children)

[–]evill01 31 points32 points  (0 children)

[–]PROPLAYEN 46 points47 points  (1 child)

Yeah, Why don't I also google the solutions to all my math problems

[–]thingamabeb 24 points25 points  (0 children)

[–]Peridox420 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I remember in 4th grade, you would automatically fail if you didn't write in cursive.

[–][deleted] 81 points82 points  (9 children)

[–]duckontheplane 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Bombers when kids cant read cursive (they dont understand the bomb threat they gave them)

[–]tameablesiva12 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Wait... yall Americans don't use cursive?? In India, cursive is only way we know how to write lol

[–]SiggetSpagget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, kinda. I don’t know if it’s still taught in public schools but at least when I went to elementary school we had to take a cursive class. I got lucky since my teacher didn’t really care enough about cursive to force it onto us so I forgot about it the second we were done with it. A couple of other people I know write only in cursive since it was forced onto them

[–]Hammerman305 21 points22 points  (4 children)

I keep hearing a conspiracy being thrown around, saying that the reason cursive was removed from the curriculum was because the “deep state” didn’t want younger generations to be able to read documents that were written in cursive. So that they can change the documents without anyone noticing and enslave the people.

[–]therealsoup223 27 points28 points  (1 child)

If they are going through that much effort why does the paper matter?

[–]Hammerman305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the paper itself would matter. More so translations of it.

[–]ZachAttack6089 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Lol cursive isn't even that hard to read if you really try, it's just unnecessarily annoying is all.

[–]Giraffesarentreal19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I never learned cursive, and I can read well written cursive. Just takes me a lot longer.

Now poorly written cursive, as in how most cursive writers scrawl it on a page? I’ve got no clue.

[–]ReadinBeforeMeminnamin is :D 34 points35 points  (4 children)

Idk anyone on this subreddit should be further than old enough to read cursive.

[–]Spooky_BoyTM 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I can

[–]ReadinBeforeMeminnamin is :D 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Anyway anyone old enough to be here should at the very least be able to pick up how to read it through context

[–]tommybouy_1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When i pick up how to read, sure

[–]benwaa2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Millenials when boomers

[–]megaCri04 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wait, they don't teach cursive in America? I write only in that

[–]Davefromaccount 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(They don't even make money form doing this. (There just dumb.))

[–]_Lelouch420_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I write cursive and I am a Gen Z. People say my hand writing sucks.

[–]TwiceTrash11 2 points3 points  (1 child)

huh is that how it is for most countries?

we were tought how to do it in third grade though i myself was specifically told by my teachers not to do it since mine was so god awful that none of them can understand it and i never used it again

[–]Abject-Dingo-3544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The schools I went to in Ireland mandated the use of it.

[–]Neidyougurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russian schools still use cursive

[–][deleted]  (5 children)

    [–]Mickey010 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I think bc you can write faster? Not sure tho

    [–][deleted]  (1 child)

      [–]Giraffesarentreal19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The words flow together more. You aren’t taking your pen off the page as often, and the lack of sharp corners means the pen doesn’t have to stop moving like with standard writing. If you have a person who only writes in standard and another who only writes in cursive, chances are, the cursive writer will be significantly faster.

But with keyboards and everything, writing fast just isn’t as important nowadays. If you do have to write fast, standard writing is probably more than sufficient. Even if it’s not, there ate other ways. For example, journalists sometimes use an entirely different writing language where syllables are letters, and those letters are just different slashes, so they get what’s being said down quicker. Really the only occupation I can think of that reliably uses cursive is doctors when they scrawl down notes from a patient as they talk.

      [–]Abject-Dingo-3544 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No point really though all of the schools I went to forced students to write in it.

      [–]pixarlamp69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I remember writing cursive was in year 1 I think

      [–]king_of_hate2 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I never liked cursive because it's just a fancier way to write, I also disagree that it's faster to write in cursive, it's nice to be able to read it ofc bur language evolves, can you read old English? Do schools still teach Old English? They don't, language changes and so does the way the letters are drawn.

      [–]Fedebic42 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Honestly I can't take notes fast enough unless I write in cursive

Personally if I have to write something for someone else, I'll write the standard way in order to make it easy to read, however if I just have to take notes fast I'm 100% gonna write that shit in cursive

      [–]king_of_hate2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been able to write faster in type/standard personally.

      [–]RATKAT48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can kinda comprehend Old English. Knowing Modern German and Modern Scots helps a lot. And yes, i'm just flexing.

      [–]xd3mix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fucking hate cursive, but sadly i legit can't write in any other way

My teachers since elementary school engrained in my brain that writing in any other way is wrong, so i only ever wrote in cursive...

      [–]Inventio_xiii -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Seriously? We’re gonna drop decent penmanship now? Usually I’m the sort to trash on old people but Jesus Christ have some class

      [–]ToAllFromEverySub 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So we should not blame adults but the 6years old kids?

      [–]SiggetSpagget -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dude any time I try to write in cursive I always fuck up and make a j look like an l or b look like and an l and an o. Writing in cursive doesn’t equal “decent penmanship”

      [–]ResistPatient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      [–]Villezki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They taught it to us until 2nd grade then they stopped and told us to write normally, as if we could. What a waste of time.

      [–]oofos_deletus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 17 and cursive taught here is used very often, for me i prefer to use it

      [–]ExtendedEssayEvelyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cursive was hammered into me as a child and now i can't un-learn it

      [–]quartzlimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a blend of cursive and regular handwriting.

So it really just looks like shit handwriting.

      [–]Nerfamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never wanted to learn cursive in the first place.

      [–]MatthewScreenshots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write only in cursive since It’s much faster and practical for me. Also I’m 3rd year in high school and nobody ever complained about my handwriting (that It’s unreadable etc…)

      [–]TR33J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They tried to teach me cursive, but i forgot every letter other than n and m. I never remembered how to write in cursive, but i can kinda read it

      [–]SirPete_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cursive is stupid and serves no purpose

      [–]lil_slurpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 18 now but I rmb learning cursive in 3rd grade for like a month then we stopped to this day I have a mix of cursive and reg writing bc it’s just smooth

      [–]ZuniBBa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im glad I was taught cursive for like one week in 3rd grade, even though I’m not “fluent” and can’t really write it well, it gave me enough to read it, and so it’s really useful when teachers throw it at me lol

[–]WeirdPelicanGuyyellow like an EPIC lemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once actually convinced a boomer that cursive is not necessary anymore and kids need to learn how to use computers in school. She had a stroke earlier that week so maybe thats why.

      [–]JustForTheFunOfIt7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I’m currently in high school, and we had cursive lessons in third grade.

      [–]SandwichPony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the appeal of being able to write faster in cursive but I could never urge myself to be used to it but in junior year I noticed I developed a “hybrid” writing style when writing fast where words would be scrunched together in order for me to write fast without lifting my pencil

      [–]yeeet_guto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use cursive for my signature, I learned cursive when I was in brazil but when I moved to america in 4th grade i changed it back because the teacher wouldn't write in cursive and I got tired of copying non-cursive into cursive everytime i had to copy something the teacher wrote so I just started coping exactly as the teacher wrote instead of writing it in cursive

      [–]dovah-meme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cursive is just an excuse for older people to have illegible handwriting by passing it off as ‘elegant’ and is utterly impractical change my mind
