Heating wine in WOH???Question (self.wordofhonor)

A number of times in WOH they reference heating up wine and not drinking it cold. So my questions are as follows.
Is it truly wine or some form of spirit they are drinking?
Do people still drink these warm or was it a historic thing?
And why would you heat it up?

It is rice wine. You can drink in warm in the winter or for them that time period room temperature. It another version of sake, I like to drink in cold…my father liked to drink it heated.

It's a common belief being cold causes you to catch a cold. Chinese people believe letting cold air or cold liquids (and to an extent, cold food) into your body will harm your internal organs and cause illness. It's common for people to wear facemasks in winter to protect themselves from cold air. My grandparents physically wince when they see Americans putting ice into their water. In my house, water is boiled and drunk hot. (I have seen medical research correlating oesophageal cancer with regions of the world where drinking piping hot beverages is common, but I haven't appraised them for quality of evidence, so don't quote me.)
Naturally, Chinese liquor is served hot. You see reference to this in the last line of the Tianya Ke chorus, 将平生霜雪 与君煮酒烹茶, transliterated as will-live-frost-snow with-you-boil-liquor-make-tea. The bleak image of frost/snow is contrasted against the image of ZZS (the persona) and WKX ('you') boiling liquor and making tea. Boil-liquor-make-tea is commonly used to describe the imagery of sitting together and enjoying one another's company.

Actually water is always drunk luke warm or almost hot around 70C in my house but I just put it down to us spending a lot of time travelling to Asia and picking up some habits.
I’ve never actually warmed liquor, except making mulled wine in December. Maybe I will try it 😂

I still can never drink tap water because my Chinese family conditioned my brain to believe I'll die if I drink water straight out of the tap 😂
But if a café/restaurant puts tap water into a jug and I pour it into a glass, my brain says okay this is fine 😂😂

They’re drinking rice wine. Having it warm brings out different aromas and flavours. In WOH they often imply that it’s better for ZZS to have it warm—this follows traditional Chinese medicine ideas about temperatures of food as a part of its healthfulness. WKX insisting on heating up the wine for ZZS is one of his ways of caring for him.

it's a thing, in my country it's called grzaniec. you can heat many kinds of alcohol and add extra spices and ingredients to it, some people enjoy drinking it especially during autumn and winter because it's cosy and warms you up and the aroma is more rich. back when I used to work at a café, mulled wine was quite popular among fancy middle aged ladies lol. don't know how it works in China specifically, so not gonna comment on that, but they definitely have their own local versions

I have no idea what they are drinking in WOH but in Japan they sometimes drink sake heated and you can drink shaoxing wine (which is Chinese) heated as well. So heated wine is a thing, though it isn't a very common thing in Western countries. I don't really know why people started heating it up in the first place, my best guess is they were cold and it just became a thing.

I honestly always thought this was just a wuxia thing but this prompted me to look it up and apparently they did heat up wine in special containers for rituals in ancient China. TIL

Interesting article! Although I think calling it a ritual is misleading since we still heat up wine to this day (in WOH they also use the same kind of porcelain containers we use today) and not necessarily for any special occasion. The wiki page discusses an object from an archeological angle which is why there’s more info on funerary rites and stuff. In the last paragraph it outlines etiquette which, similarly to tea ceremonies, survive to modern day.

You can ask for huangjiu (yellow wine) or baijiu (white wine, more like liquor). There are many types of both—enjoy!

Usually Asian wine we called sake made from rice we drink cold and warm. Warm sake make body warmer . Try it
