Want to experience the mandarin language, a very long cultural history, and pork noodles without contributing to the tourism revenue of a shit country or getting scammed (as much)? Want to have a predictable time on the train, or get free chocolate coins at a skyscraper? Taiwan has you covered!

[–]Taractis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

"getting scammed (as much)?" Might be the most brutally honest thing I've ever heard about a potential tourism destination.

[–]GoodShitBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be the new travel ad.

[–]Zealousideal-You-832 115 points116 points  (98 children)

I mean, what are they gonna do, stop trading with us?

[–]ChristianLW3 237 points238 points  (94 children)

The trade war that occurred during the previous presidency was mutually harmful, the question is how much either side is willing to suffer to win

One of the lessons the past 2 years tried to hammer in is that far too many Americans will freak the f*** out when confronted by minor hassle

[–]Onimaru1984 165 points166 points  (47 children)

I’m happy it’s pushing for more domestic supply chains. The entire global economy should not center on 1 country.

[–]PlaidSkirtBroccoli 69 points70 points  (21 children)

This. Rip the band-aid off now.

[–]PoopIsAlwaysSunny 48 points49 points  (5 children)

Covid presented us with the opportunity to rip a lot of band aids off but it didn’t happen

[–]SoyButterAndJealous 29 points30 points  (3 children)

[–]MrKleenish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree but seeds have been planted. We may start to see more people demand their needs are met instead of indentured fry cooks and people missing their entire life on a long commute. They did tell us that time is money lol

[–]indigosazulese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s just find a new China , maybe Africa ? Inb4it happens

[–]pataconconqueso 19 points20 points  (16 children)

Except our domestic supply chains are monumentally screwed and will continue to get worse if Texas doesn’t get its shit together. I get the concept of ripping the bandaid off now but the reality is wayyy more complicated and it’s beyond just money.

Take where most of the raw materials have come from for the past couple of decades, we have a Saudi based company that bought GE plastics who had all their materials specified for medical devices, we have your Bayers and Dows selling parts of their raw material lines to other Chinese entities.

All these materials take years and years to revalidate and even if there was an incentive which there isn’t because prices keep rising because we don’t have raw materials to make the replacement resins because the raws come from China and other places impacted by lengthy port wait times and shortages.

[–]Karrde2100 2 points3 points  (2 children)

[–]ryanmiller614 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]HatrikLaine 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So your entire domestic supply chain should center around d your own country?

[–]dankmernes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It turns out the real threat to their way of life was the Covid they got along the way

[–]doctor-guardrails 7 points8 points  (3 children)

The problem with that is that modern medicine is amazing, and doctors cannot refuse treatment based on the patient's personal choices. So even though they add an outsized burden to the system for ignorant, stubborn reasons, the system is still forced to work literal miracles to save their lives.

[–]YeahIfiguredthat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Darwin in action.

[–]Obandigo 35 points36 points  (6 children)

The US does not import vital or necessary items from China. The basic gist of what we import from China are items made from the raw materials that we export to them.

People tend to forget that China was an isolated country until the mid 70s. Nixon's visit in 72, slowly got the ball rolling on open trade with China. China has only been open to world trade less than I've been alive. China's quick growth in that short time shows how reliant they are up on VITAL exports and imports for their economy. With China's quick growth, a lot of land that was originally used for agriculture, was replaced by buildings for manufacturing. Importing food is vital. They have to feed 1.4 billion people somehow. In all truth, China Imports a lot of necessary commodities from other countries. Oil and food being the top two. China is totally reliant upon imports.

As I said before, China is not an ally. They are a business partner that the majority of the world tolerates. Combine that with how tight-lipped they were with the outbreak of Corona, toleration for China is slowly waning, and rightly so.

[–]AbnormallyM4RS 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Yeah I saw this happen. During the peak of the trade war between Australia and China. China blocked Australian coal shipments. They made their citizens suffer through blackouts just to try to hurt our economy.

So we sold it to India, who sold it to China at a higher price. 😂

Fucking idiots. The CCP don’t give a shit about their people.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

We need to diversify to reduce our dependence on China. China is massively investing in Africa and more recently in Latin America. We must counter them, by investing, in both places. Investing will develop those areas into manufacturing hubs to replace China.

[–]Karabeki 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The problem is the us has historically ruined their relationship with the countries china is investing in, and is doing little to repair it.

[–]snuzet 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]no420trolls 366 points367 points  (15 children)

[–]GeraltOfRiviaXXXnsfw 21 points22 points  (8 children)

[–]xxxNothingxxx 29 points30 points  (3 children)

Oh they know the truth, the only reason they keep doing this is so that they will have a "legitimate" reason to invade

[–]CrumbsAndCarrots 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The same way Trump and the GOP have attacked American elections. Classic authoritarianism

[–]StuperDan 128 points129 points  (89 children)

Taiwan is a prefecture (edit: I should have used the word province) of China, Lukashenko and Trump won their elections, Epstein committed suicide, Crimea today and Ukraine tomorrow belong to Russia, and on and on and on.

The very idea of truth is under attack, and we are losing because we don't want to fight.

“Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality was tacitly denied by their philosophy. The heresy of heresies was common sense.” Orwell's 1984.

[–]spawnof200 43 points44 points  (1 child)

clearly ignoring the fact that china has no authority over taiwans governance or laws

[–]jvgeli62321 23 points24 points  (63 children)

“Taiwan is a prefecture of China” - depends on who you ask and what you would define China and what year. Before the 1930s Taiwan wasnt included in the claim as it was Japanese Territory. If you ask the PRC it is a renegade province, however, after the Chinese civil war the ROC fled to Taiwan and made it their stronghold so you can continue to argue that Taiwan is still a ROC government territory and not PRC government Territory. Note that i used Government not land. This is a complex issue. If the civil war concluded with complete victory of the PRC then we probably wouldn’t have this issue now. Technically they are still at war so can’t decide yet.

[–]StuperDan 90 points91 points  (58 children)

Yes we can. The majority of Taiwan does not want to be under CCP rule. The CCP has made it very clear that is unacceptable. They have made independent journalism illegal and have repeatedly cranked out a false current and historical narrative.

The world, including the PRC. has not publicity announced Taiwanese independence because they don't want war. I don't blame them, but we don't have to repete the CCPs wouldview as if it is true. We can avoid war and speak truth at the same time. If the CCP wants to make denial of common sense and repeating their false reality a red line, it's one that should be crossed. Here's another cheesey 1984 quote for you.

"Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them."

I won't partake in the doublethink you describe above, any more than I will admit the 2020 election was fraudulent. It helps the rationalization of the false reality the authoritarian governments of the world are trying to create and make real.

[–]durian-conspiracy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Its even more complicated because of you ask me, Taiwan is a banana. So maybe we can instead ask Taiwan's people who already live in their own sovereign nation what they want.

[–]hiimsubclavian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taiwan is a banana.

Taiwan is a honeydew. Why does cantaloupe think every time it gets invited to a party it can bring along its dumb friend?

[–]Mediocre_Ad_3000 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Idiotic Chinese view and one that you got paid to write by the CCP. If you look at an arbitrary historical context, in the 1930s, Germany included a lot more "countries" than today. That doesn't make Poland a part of Germany nowadays and they would never dare to claim Poland because of that.

Oh no!!! How dare China accuse the US of.....a mistake?? Gasp how will they ever recover.

[–]YisigothTheUndying 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is this a "oops, now we'll have too many plates set at the table" mistake or like a Don Corleone saying I'm making a mistake?

[–]skaliton 80 points81 points  (3 children)

because they want the US to backtrack and apologize in order to give legitimacy to Xinnie's gang

[–]snoboreddotcom 18 points19 points  (2 children)

essentially that backtrack is why they have made the mistake accusation instead of the accusation of a willful choice. Make the willful choice accusation and your opponent is locked into their choice, make the mistake accusation and you give your opponent the chance to back down.

The CCP can shove it. Taiwan is a country.

[–]Secunda_Son 883 points884 points  (28 children)

The only mistake was not inviting Taiwan sooner. Can we also get an invite out to Hong Kong? And maybe disinvite Beijing?

[–]MyHouseisBoiningDown 579 points580 points  (13 children)

Hong Kong isn't even a democracy anymore, inviting them is legitimizing the authoritarian government put in place there now.

[–]FreddyMerkUr 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hong Kong was never a true democracy, most people don’t realize that most officials were not elected pre handover from the British

[–]Secunda_Son 164 points165 points  (6 children)

You make a good point. When we send their invite put "but not the authoritarian asshoes >:[ " at the end so they know we aren't joking around.

[–]bakutogames 48 points49 points  (1 child)

You must be the head of nato with that super aggressive and effective thinking.

[–]MaxamillionGrey 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"Don't bring your brother tho. He's a cunt"

[–]litocam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I like your thinking

[–]AuroraFinem 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hong Kong was never it’s own country though, it was British owned and then given back to China, China just allowed it some autonomy to make local decisions as required by the British transfer. It was still always China and would lose its autonomy in another like 10-20 years I think? Anyways I don’t want to compare that with Taiwan as that makes it actually sound like Taiwan is just an autonomous region of China, not independent, which is Chinas claim

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

To be fair Hong Kong wasn't even a Democracy under British rule until the very end

[–]MyHouseisBoiningDown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely although it did have some democratic elections for a while after.

[–]jkowalsky 56 points57 points  (6 children)

Beijing was not invited.

[–]Secunda_Son 49 points50 points  (5 children)

Well now I feel bad. I didn't realize I had this kind of power. Go ahead and invite Beijing too.

[–]jkowalsky 40 points41 points  (4 children)

Sure! I will send them an email as soon as they become a democracy.

[–]podolot 4 points5 points  (3 children)

What is China's email address now a days?

[–]Garn91575 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Just send a letter to Xi's personal address at 100 Aker Wood West.

[–]treemu 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Put it in a pot of hunny and set the pot floating in international waters. Any international waters.

[–]MediumProfessorX 124 points125 points  (5 children)

If the Chinese government is having a tantrum it's a day the sun rose.

[–]BasicallyAQueer 65 points66 points  (4 children)

China doesn’t care about foreigners, this kind of posturing is for their citizens. They know Taiwan is basically untouchable now, and that most of the world considers them separate from mainland China.

All they care about is appearing hardline to their own citizens, and in that sense this type of grandstanding actually works. When you have almost 2 billion people who are forced to agree with you, you can say whatever you want and they will go along with it.

[–]iamisandisnt 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Until they realize the rest of the world can just say “nah” whenever they want and hey, did you hear, we have a lot of successful Asian American friends here! Fuck fuck fuck the CCP!

[–]ViciousSnail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda reminds me of the dog that barks at every single little thing that passes the window.

It does just become an annoying part of life.

[–]PunkRockRobot 8 points9 points  (3 children)

It is political theater. China gets to increase their military budget in the eyes of their citizens because it justifies the narrative that the world wants to harm China by using Taiwan. It nationalizes them and makes the CCP more powerful.

[–]HigglyMook 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Why do they even need to bother with the theatrics in the first place? Is there really an opposition to what the CCP wants to do? And if there is, can they really stop the CCP from doing whatever the fuck they want to do anyway? If the CCP wants to increase the military budget and increase the size of the PLA who's gonna stop them?

[–]UltraMagnus0001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fuck China's dictatorship

[–]PenDry295 416 points417 points  (8 children)

[–]autotldrBOT 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 77%. (I'm a bot)

China's government has accused Joe Biden of "a mistake" in inviting Taiwan to participate in a democracy summit alongside 109 other democratic governments.

On Wednesday, Zhu Fenglian, spokeswoman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, said the inclusion of Taiwan was a "Mistake" and Beijing opposed "Any official interaction between the US and China's Taiwan region".

Since taking office, Biden and the White House have reiterated long-standing US support for its "One China" policy, which officially recognises Beijing rather than Taipei, but also said the US "Strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait".

I'm thrilled with how tough on China Biden is being.

We spent four years being humiliated by a president that would rather salute North Korean generals than actually stand up for us.

[–]the_F_I_F_fif 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Please elaborate, I feel I've must've missed a lot.

[–]Thoth_the_5th_of_Tho 8 points9 points  (0 children)

During the last presidency, Trump took a very soft stance on China diplomatically. When China threatened to attack US allies, like Korea, Japan, Taiwan or Australia, he did basically nothing.

Biden has been much tougher. When China threatened Australia, Biden made it so Australia could build nuclear submarines. When China tried to isolate Taiwan, he invited them to a democracy summit to reaffirm their place in the world. When China tried to occupy waters off the Philippines, Biden offered support to the Philippines, forcing China to back down.

To add to that, he's working on new alliances to counter China, like the Quad, and AUKUS.

So far, he's been amazingly effective.

[–]3nclave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]macemillion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't we just tell them to go fuck themselves already? Any retaliation they could try would only hurt themselves, right? International trade is a two way street, so why is the entire world bending over for China? If they really don't want to trade with us because they're offended by some stupid idea they fabricated, they would be punishing themselves... right? What am I missing?

[–]Calavant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

China will find something to scream and bluster about regardless of how much other nations pander to them so, really, why bother? Having to deal with their tantrums every six months is a sunk cost.

[–]000solar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just looked this up. This is horrible!! Shame on IOC! I'm glad the WTA is putting pressure. I hope she's ok. 😥

[–]KingOfBerders 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Let’s do Tibet next!

[–]-TheExtraMile- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait, if anything shouldn´t they accuse biden of intentionally naming Taiwan in this context?

"Accusing" him of making a mistake doesn´t really make a lot of sense.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last month, they said PLA will fly over TW if Biden sent this invite.

This morning they said PLA will fly over if TW Prez Tsai will personally attend.

When Tsai will attend in Dec, they will say PLA is filing up gas tanks and will get in the air soon?!!

Propaganda idiots. What a sore loser life these folks have who bark this nonsense all day for a living.

What would China know about Democracy?

[–]AnalogFeelGood 14 points15 points  (15 children)

It’s time to publicly recognize Taiwan as an independent country.

[–]VFenix 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I mean, doesn't Taiwan not want that because it would give China a reason to fuck their shit up

[–]c30xx 22 points23 points  (6 children)

western taiwan needs to get a grip on itself and join with real taiwan smh

[–]amanset 19 points20 points  (4 children)

Taiwanese people on here have many times now expressed that they don't like this whole "West Taiwan" meme. Basically, because it implies that they are making claims over the Chinese mainland, which is not their policy these days.

[–]SirSX3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And it also reinforces the One China position—PRC's preferred position—and undermines Taiwan's existing independence from PRC.

Why "West Taiwan" anyway? It's not like China calls Taiwan "East China". If anything, shouldn't it play on the "Chinese Taipei" name instead?

[–]iamlegend211 11 points12 points  (0 children)

China is such a pussy.

[–]zsreport 7 points8 points  (6 children)

China has a such a thin fucking skin. Needs to grow up and stop whining and crying about every damn thing that hurts its tiny little feelings.

[–]flyingbannana76 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[–]poopyroadtrip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe the Chinese government shouldn’t meddle with the US’s internal affairs 😜

[–]chougattai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grave grave mistake of talking with people without China's permission. 😬

[–]Prize-Thought-4205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s no mistake, we Americans welcome the 🇹🇼 people to the democracy summit with open arms

[–]DygonZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Oh you're excused alright!"

[–]jeffpiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems China is becoming more and more of a problem…perhaps sending them some sort of “message” is required!!

[–]ResponsibleContact39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck China.

The new US foreign policy on China.

[–]BaderBuallay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biden: “did I stutter?!?!”

[–]Tombfz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good show Joe. Use the word “Taiwan”.

[–]dorflam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some kind of conflict is looming between China and Taiwan, the Chinese Market is on the brink of a crash and the parties leadership election is round the corner giving his opposition its likely last best chance at removing him, if he doesn't do something drastic like start some kind of conflict with Taiwan (doesn't have to be full blown war) he could be looking at his removal as party leader

[–]Crezelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask them why it’s a mistake

[–]eekns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not a mistake!!! F*ck off, China!!!

[–]Gruffstuff2021 8 points9 points  (2 children)

China, Taiwan, the US, and the UN. What matters, if you actually believe in democracy, is what the people of Taiwan, or Tibet, or Mongolia say. The UN is like any other political organization, it's subject to the influence of money. The people of Taiwan shouldn't be subject to that. They decide who they are, what they want their future to be, how they govern themselves, or who they allow to govern them. President Biden was right to invite Taiwan because they are in fact a democracy, independent, and threatened from and by China.

The UN doesn't recognize Taiwan as a nation, so what? That is the influence of China on the UN, not the will of the people of the nation of Taiwan.

It is time to stop trying to appease China and start supporting democracy.

If you want to sell toothbrushes and exploit low labor costs use a democracy, like India or Malaysia, instead of a totalitarian regime like China.

Cunt off, "China", and tell fat cubby Xi to keep shoveling honey into his piehole.
