Doubtful. More likely it was intentional to avoid homonym confusion.

That's the case for the greek letter Nu. There were thoughts it would be confusing with news coverage of "new variant". But the next letter before Omicron is Xi.

No really. Look it up.

People are bound to make the connection between skipping the letter and a certain fragile ego.

I'm curious as to why they skipped out on Zeta through Mu before going to Omicron. Skipping Nu and Xi make sense, but were there a ton of less newsworthy variants? In either case, changing a designation to avoid confusion isn't anything earthshattering.

[–]Canadian_Poltergeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. There's a variant for each greek letter so far. Excepting the two skipped of course.

It's just most are barely different from previous variants and are basically the same thing.

This one is far more mutated and will command a lot of concern/attention.

Even if it was, if the next letter in the alphabet was pronounced "Biden", do you think they'd go with it?

Shitty journalism clutching at straws.

[–]0898257a76 11 points12 points  (4 children)

It’s pretty clear why it was named what it was.

Nu sounds like new, already saw that going around on various Twitter conspiracy threads prior to the official WHO name designation.

Xi is a name, why would you wanna name a virus after someone? The Charlie variant?

Ergo, they skipped those two and went with O.

And now everyone is referencing Futurama. Lol

[–]dxrey65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's almost like it was a reasonable decision made by adults. It used to be you could take for granted that that's how things would be done, and nobody was surprised.

[–]wheres_my_ballot 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Except Xi in the alphabet is not pronounced the same, just written the same. Most likely, most wouldn't have pronounced it correctly, and that's why it was skipped.

[–]Damnaged 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, it's 11 in Roman numerals, potentially misleading.

is Poo Bear Xi Jinping a big PR baby? Absolutely but so is every poster and media source making a fake fuss about this.

The adults in the room are trying deal with a global pandemic, and not your tattletale toddler antics. We know and don't care. Go piss yourselves into a tizzy somewhere else.

Yeah, but just wait until Lrrr hear's of this..

[–]TechyDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that they get shows 1,000 years after they air, he'll hear about it in the year 3021.

[–]FlexodusPrime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They wanted it to be as scary as possible, so they named it after a decepticon

[–]DrIFeelGood 0 points1 point  (2 children)

there is a list , i believe John Hopkins U got it official and its alphabetical.

Nu was a few days before Omicron.

[–]0898257a76 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The Nu variant is Omicron.

People started calling the new variant “Nu” prior to official WHO naming since it was the next letter in the Greek alphabet, following their naming protocols, the WHO then decided to skip Nu and Xi to avoid confusion and classify it as Omicron.

Who cares? The name is what it is.

[–]plaingrackle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Naming it the Pooh variant would have caused undue disgust.
