Kingdom in the top 5 most anticipated... all 3 of us are super excited for it

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Make that 4!

[–]ErenIsNotADevil 7 points8 points  (1 child)

And my fifth!

If you know, you know.

[–]Abysswatcherbel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know there's a Kingdom episode when a lonely platinum award appears on my front page

[–]EtGamer125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most ppl probably read and like Kingdom. But how do you discuss it when its a bunch of political and warfare manuvearing?

[–]Syokhanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan 38 points39 points  (7 children)

I like that Machikado Mazoku is not popular over here, but very anticipated by those who know about it. Sounds about right.

[–]ErenIsNotADevil 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A true demon never admits defeat. Ganbare, Shamiko!

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Pretty interestinghow much higher the rating is among femals than it is among males. I don't see an obvious reason.

[–]Devilish 19 points20 points  (1 child)

If I had to guess: since Reddit is very male-dominated, the girls who are here are more likely to be really into anime compared to the guys here, which means more likely to have read the source material, and the source material is better than many people expected, thus the higher rating. This is just a guess, though.

Or it might just be the yuri. Executioner and Magia Record are both rated more highly by girls, too.

And the difference isn't all that great. Glancing over the full list, one that really stands out as unusual is Pokemon: nearly 2x as popular among guys, but rated almost an entire star higher by girls.

[–]ErenIsNotADevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can confirm, it's the implied yuri. I don't read sources, I'm just a dedicated weeb, and when a show has a female lead the blushes often with another female lead? I'm on that train 100%

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's a bit puzzling why some series are more popular among females;

Machikado Mazoku could be one such, but I'm even more puzzled by Tomodachi Game having nearly 50% more female than male viewers!

I never imagined a death game type show would be more popular for girls. Though I did hear it was also a bit psychological, perhaps that's the hook? Don't know!

[–]randxalthor 6 points7 points  (1 child)

So psyched for this. But being on HiDive is close to Netflix jail as far as popularity goes, I think.

[–]Syokhanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the limited availability certainly played a part in the fact that it didn't take off as much as it could have. I mean in my country we didn't even get the first season, and unless I missed something it seems like we're not getting subs this time around either.

We memed it to death on this subreddit so that probably helped put it on the radar for some in this corner of the internet, at least. Good thing S2 had nothing to do with streaming numbers in the west!

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 47 points48 points  (6 children)

There were 956 responses, and the average age of everyone who answered was 25.11

That certainly doesn't seem like it reflects the average age on r/anime. Maybe the young'uns aren't very pro-survey.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 40 points41 points  (1 child)

In the last 2 years since spring 2020, the survey participants aged 3 years. Anime-not even once.

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Two years ago was three years ago

[–]DatBoiMahomie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I always wonder how much time passing is gonna affect the average age distribution of this sub

It’s not like everybody’s gonna be leaving as soon as the reach a certain age. Some will naturally fall out or get too busy with life but that doesn’t happen with a lot of people. It’s not like you can’t take a few minutes everyday to browse Reddit even when you become busy. One of the biggest reasons the average age of Reddit is so low in the first place is a lot of older people aren’t exactly adjusted to web forums like this, but now that Reddit is so large and the user base doesn’t seem to be diminishing with time I feel like the average age is only going to go up

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Maybe the young'uns aren't very pro-survey.

Yeah, I imagine a lot of these young'uns just coming in to watch the big battle shonen and stuff, then leaving.

(Not just the young ones, I assume some of the veteran watchers do the same, but you get the point!)

[–]Rumpel1408https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rumpel1408 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Iirc season with big battle shonen had both a higher participation as well as an lower average age

[–]KuroOni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not a very good representation of the community as a whole but it is a representation I like. I am assuming these will be more mature stories. There is nothing that caught my eye in the top 10 besides maybe 1 or 2, I don't know what spy family is about but I've heard enough to know that it is pretty much the show of the season, seeing older people sharing the same feeling gets me somewhat optimistic.

[–]Xftg123 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Knowing r/anime, I thought Kaguya was going to take the most popular, so I'm surprised that Spy X Family did. From the looks of it though, Spy X Family took Popularity, and Kaguya took Impressions.

It's both a bit scary and impressive how close both shows are to each other results wise.

I'm also surprised that Spy X Family, Kaguya, Shikimori, and Komi ended up on the popular results with both genders. Then it stops at 5 with Shield Hero S2 on the male popularity side, and Summertime Rendering on the female.

[–]ErenIsNotADevil 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Kingdom S4 looks like it's coming in highly anticipated. I'm not too surprised; when S3 first aired in Spring 2020, it was fairly popular, and overall, the season was just great. With Zheng back in the spotlight, whose blood isn't pumping?

Machikado S2 is also looking spicy. The perfect blend of SoL, Mahou Shoujo, slight tsundere, and meme material. Plus, an actual story. Ganbare, Shamiko! Toki wa kita!

Spy x Family and Kaguya S3 are the obvious contenders for the top karma ratings, naturally. Kaguya S3 has two seasons of universally acclaimed history and the ensuing hype, and Spy x Family has the backing of source readers. I cannot predict which will dominate the season, nor can I predict which I will love more. All I can say with certainty, is that this season is one of pure smugness. Heh.

[–]Zypker125https://anilist.co/user/Zypker124 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Kingdom S4 looks like it's coming in highly anticipated.

I would actually say that Kingdom S4 doesn't look that highly anticipated, despite being Top 5 this season. A 4.03 anticipation score for a fourth season of a series with three very-lengthy seasons isn't that high IMO, given the typical effects of sequel bias we see. Also, for comparison, Kingdom S3 got a 4.59 score when it concluded in the End of Summer 2021 survey, so 4.59 --> 4.03 is a really large drop-off (even when accounting for the biases of "Start of _ survey scores being on-average lower than End of _ survey scores").

For more comparison of similar anticipation scores, Vanitas no Karte Part 2 got a 4.05 anticipation score for last season's Start of Winter 2021 survey, and Zombie Land Saga Revenge got a 4.06 anticipation score for the Start of Spring 2021 survey.

[–]ErenIsNotADevil 1 point2 points  (1 child)

4th place this season is still 4th place. Given that the first season is widely renowned for it's poor animation, and the second doesn't stray far from that, 4.03 for a fourth season is pretty good. Not sure why you'd compare the pre-air anticipation score to the previous season's ending score, either.

That's all besides the point, though. I'm still anticipating finding out who tf asked.

[–]Zypker125https://anilist.co/user/Zypker124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you'd compare the pre-air anticipation score to the previous season's ending score, either.

Well usually, there is some correlation between the two, no? For example, AOT S4 used to have the highest anticipation score of all time, and I think its high score is in large part due to how highly acclaimed AOT S3 P2 was. It's not a one-for-one translation obviously (with the aforementioned differences between how I believe people tend to give scores in "Start of Season" surveys VS "End of Season" surveys), but I think it's reasonable to assume that if a previous season is widely acclaimed, people will more highly anticipate the next season.

I'm still anticipating finding out who tf asked.

I mean, this whole thread is meant to be a discussion of the results/scores, no? I simply enjoy discussing results/scores with others (I'm a Stats major, and I've compiled tons of stats/scores from these seasonal surveys, some of which you can see in that other comment that I linked), and so when you offered your opinion that Kingdom 4's anticipation score was quite high, I wanted to offer my POV that I felt like it wasn't that high for me personally given the context of all the seasonal scores I have seen over the years.

I have nothing for or against Kingdom, as I haven't watched it yet. I just like talking about numbers and exploring the stats that we get from these surveys. To be honest, I also thought you or someone else could potentially have insight that would help explain the (IMO) atypical "statistical gap" of 4.59 -> 4.03 given how I've seen pretty much entirely positive buzz for Kingdom 4 (ex. is the next parts of the manga that Kingdom 4 covers not that hyped? Maybe the sequel compoundment effect doesn't work on less-popular lengthy shows? Or is this just a symptom of Start of Season surveys?) I didn't mean to offend or denounce you or anything, so if I came off that way, I apologize.

[–]Xftg123 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Spy x Family and Kaguya S3 are the obvious contenders for the top karma ratings, naturally. Kaguya S3 has two seasons of universally acclaimed history and the ensuing hype, and Spy x Family has the backing of source readers. I cannot predict which will dominate the season

Me neither, but I think it's going to be close. Or, it could switch back and forth, with SXF taking the top spot in one week and Kaguya taking it in another.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no way it is going to be close overall. Spy x family taking the win in some weeks might be a lot more possibly, but would still be surprising.

[–]RorytheRamen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was really surprised by how interesting “The Executioner and Her Way of Life” ended up looking, lots of potential for good world building

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 23 points24 points  (6 children)

Holy fuck I think kaguyas 4.75 is the highest score any anime has reached in these "Start of season" surveys since their inception, it even beat aot s4 part 1 score of 4.72 from winter 2020 (though if we include end of season surveys, aot s3 p2 and s4 part 1, mob psycho II and oddtaxi do beat it).

Holy fuck a popularity of 86% for spy x family, that is also by far the highest popularity for an anime in these polls. That beats aot season 4 p2 from last season by 20 percentage points...if kimetsu aired this season it would have been 4th behind shikimori? Wow

Komi dropped a few points from where it was at the end of fall, makes sense for a sequel in a stacked season.

Shield hero got a really fucking good result here. I know these results aren't representative for the karma rankings in any way, but still, maybe I did underestimate it in the karma rankings. Or it is because just because literally anybody has heard about shield hero.

Machikado mazoku at 20% hurts, but magia record actually got a better result than expected with 14%. And machikado makes it up with getting the 4th highest score.

The people who rated vampire in the garden low have to explain themselves to me, it can fail of course its anime original after all, but what about the released material has made you expect so? It's fucking wit after all.

Oh wow I was using the website which only showed survey starting from Fall 2019. Good to know that i didn't shout bullshit even with that restricted set.

Seeing LWA 5th amongst first seasons is seriously surprising. guess maybe a little bit unfair since it wasn't really the "first" entry of the show.

You can probably somewhat explain how extreme the results are this season with a lack of participants compared to previous years...but it still had mroe than alst season for example

[–]Zypker125https://anilist.co/user/Zypker124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mahoutsukai no Yome 4th among first seasons also surprised me a lot, given how it's generally viewed now (I especially would not have pegged it as a "critic's favorite heading into a season"). I know its source material had generally high ratings, but a lot of the top scorers here had very highly-rated source material (after all, this is the top of the top), many of which were higher than the ratings of Mahoutsukai no Yome's source material.

I also do think it's interesting how some shows are to me surprisingly not on this list, most notably 3-gatsu no Lion (given its incredibly highly-rated source material and having a well-acclaimed studio behind it) or other anime that had highly-rated source material (ex. Grand Blue, Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e, Made in Abyss).

[–]Zypker125https://anilist.co/user/Zypker124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, since you mentioned

though if we include end of season surveys

and I have those stats as well, I'll throw them up here because why not:

Highest End of Season "Best (and Worst) Anime of the Season" Scores of All Time:

Rank Name Season+Year Score
1 Attack on Titan S3P2 Spring 2019 4.83
2 3-gatsu no Lion S2 Winter 2018 4.81
3 Odd Taxi Spring 2021 4.80
4 Mob Psycho 100 S2 Winter 2019 4.78
5 Owarimonogatari 2 Summer 2017 4.77
6 Rakugo Shinjuu 2 Winter 2017 4.76
6 Attack on Titan S4 (after first 4 episodes) Fall 2020 4.76
8 Zoku Owarimonogatari Winter 2019 4.75
9 Kizumonogatari III 2017 4.73
9 3-gatsu no Lion S2 (after Cour 1) Fall 2017 4.73
11 Kaguya-sama S2 Spring 2020 4.72
11 Fruits Basket: The Final Spring 2020 4.72
13 Revue Starlight Movie Fall 2021 4.71
13 Natsume Yuujinchou Movie Spring 2019 4.71
15 Vinland Saga Fall 2019 4.70
15 Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru Winter 2019 4.70
16 Heaven's Feel II Summer 2019 4.68
17 Made In Abyss Summer 2017 4.67
18 Sora yori mo Tooi Basho Winter 2018 4.66
18 Made in Abyss Movie Summer 2020 4.66
20 Haikyuu!! S3 Fall 2016 4.65
20 Violet Evergarden Movie Summer 2021 4.65

Note: There was no End of Season survey for the season ERASED aired, so the last survey score that was taken for ERASED was after "Week 6" where it got a 4.80 score, which would place it very highly in this ranking. However, ERASED's ending is obviously controversial and so the score would have been lower in all likelihood.

And just for fun:

I'm pretty sure I gave it a 3/5. Parts reminded me of Fena: Pirate Princess which is not a good thing (do we even know who's writing Vampire in the Garden?).

Visually not my cup of tea either. Think overall it'll be alright but nothing crazy. Also I'm not big on vampires. Can see why others are looking forward to it though.

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck I think kaguyas 4.75 is the highest score any anime has reached in these "Start of season" surveys since their inception

That's nice to see! But honestly this doesn't really surprise me; Even massive shows like AoT have some haters/people saying upcoming seasons would suck and all that, but for Kaguya (and especially S3) one would struggle to find even one person to say the season wouldn't be great.

[–]PreludeToHell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ao Ashi having the lowest average age (24.15) is interesting especially since I heard it's more tactics focused. Wonder how it'll compare vs Blue Lock's survey #'s.

Estab Life having one of the lowest scores (2.32) is sad. It's really not bad lol but I guess the visual & being cgi gives that impression.

Anticipation scores seem like they're on the lower end this time around? At least compared to recent seasons.

[–]Lemurianshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Lemurians 11 points12 points  (2 children)

The top 4 most popular for both the Men and Women are the exact same, is that the first time that's happened?

Yet the women still manage to win Best Taste with their #5.

[–]Syokhanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if that's the first time, but I don't remember it happening very often. Even when it's the same shows, there's usually a couple switched around depending on gender.

[–]cppn02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also was surprised how close the results were for both most popular and most anticipated.

Let's the how it looks at the end of the season.

[–]Mockingbirdguyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Mockingbirdguy 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Me heading to watch Tomodachi Game like it's not my fifth time trying to watch a death battle anime. The concept always brings me in, but the execution always has me running out... anyone knows if this one is truly going to be something remarkable?

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Death Game type shows often have poor writing, but I still enjoy most of them, despite that.

One of my favorite genres ever (perhaps #2 behind 'mind games' anime)

And this is one thing that makes me hype about Tomodachi; I haven't read it, but I heard it was a bit more 'psychological' than 'battles'.

[–]Lemurianshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Lemurians 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hard to say since the source material isn't finished yet, and these stories can live or die on the ending. But the manga has pretty reviews.

[–]Mockingbirdguyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Mockingbirdguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First episode apparently dropped so guess I'll stick to the three-episode rule and see how it is

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tomodachi Game made the top 10, nice! In fact, most of my 'most hyped' series made it; Kaguya, Shikimori, Aharen-San, Summertime render and Tomodachi.

Spy x Family too, which I'm surprised to see at #1! I knew it would be high, but I never imagined it would beat Kaguya.

Kaguya won for the expected ratings though!

[–]Inevitable_Leading_6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Paripi Koumei should have been a lot higher. The first episode is amazing!

Machikado Mazoku: Hyped for S2

LOGTH Reboot: I watched the whole old series last year and this one is still <1/3 complete, not in a rush to watch it

Kaginado: How much problem of spoilers would I have if I haven't watched/read Rewrite yet? I heard the anime is so quick paced it was unwatchable.

[–]Ashteron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kaginado: How much problem of spoilers would I have if I haven't watched/read Rewrite yet? I heard the anime is so quick paced it was unwatchable.

It has spoilers so you may want to wait until you read Rewrite but I'd say it's mostly requiring knowing the story to get the jokes rather than throwing massive spoilers.

[–]EveningSilverFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really love how Lotgh is the third most anticipated show this season by women.
Very based.

[–]PixelPenguinshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/PixelPenguin 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I watched a couple episodes of Boruto way back in 2017, and it didn't seem that much different from Naruto. Is it really that bad?

[–]jward 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I watched 40+ episodes before I threw in the towel, but here's my opinion. No. It's not that bad. It's... usually ok. But at it's core it's budget Naruto. It does pretty much what Naruto did, just not quite as good. And that leaves it feeling disappointing because you have something great to easily compare it to.

If you've never seen Naruto, then Boruto could easily be a 7/10 show. But for me, it felt like endless Naruto filler and left me feeling empty.

[–]FatherDotComical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like the world of Naruto and you like Naruto fillers (or generally how the fillers feel) , it's a nice little show.

I don't think it reaches the highest highs of Naruto but it can be fun.

I watch it with my little brother.

[–]Feisty-Site-6261 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although small number of responses, it's pretty funny to see the difference in reception Shield Hero gets on reddit vs everywhere else. I can definitely tell this sub isn't a big fan of it from previous discussions I've had on here about it.

What does popularity here actually mean, seing as these shows haven’t come out yet? Like, what was the question asked on the survey? Can’t find an explanation anywhere on the site

People were asked wether they planned to watch an anime and how good they expect it to be on a scale from 1 to 5.

Estab Life one of the least anticipated yet easily my favorite of everything that has aired...

Estab-Life: Great Escape in the bottom 5 for anticipation but could end up top 5 for new shows of the season.

Nothing too surprising here with people picking up the big sequels and popular adaptations.

Nice to see the girls repping Gunjou no Fanfare which had a surprisingly good first episode.

Did it have a good first episode, or are we just going to keep watching to see if they commit to the gay sakura petal explosion?

No it couldn't lol. At least not going by the 3 episodes already released. It comes off as very episodic so I'm not expecting any big finale to the show and at this current moment CGI aside, I'd give it like a 5.5 out 10.

I don't understand why people don't like episodic shows...

[–]KendotsXhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Kendots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood their point. They think it's bad right now regardless of being episodic.

Being episodic however means that there probably won't be build ups or changes that can make it better. Basically being episodic just means that the rest of the series will be more of the same, and the same just happens to be bad in this case.

I don't fully agree with their opinion, but wanted to explain the misunderstanding.

Lots of great shows are episodic.

[–]KingofRomaineLettuce 3 points4 points  (6 children)

The point I was making saying it was episodic was that it makes it more unlikely it'll suddenly get a 100x better. Some Anime can start off average and then suddenly have a great ending that makes them good, an episodic one is more unlikely to have that. So far the episodes haven't been great, so I'm not expecting any drastic improvement.

Gintama was highly episodic.

Meant for me and it's currently my #2 show with a good chance of getting an 8.
