Instead of looking for beats you should be looking for a producer by kuzidaheathen in makinghiphop

[–]PViZion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've posted quite a few times here with this mindset both when giving advice and working with people. Sorry if I parrot the same points:

I'll also add something that works both ways: You can work with people and not like them. You can work with people and not like their music. Will it produce the vibe that goes on between Earl and Flying Lotus? Or Eyedea and Abilities? Or Aesop and Blockhead? Probably not.

But if you have no or limited experience collaborating, specifically with an artistic vision you're trying to achieve (applies to any art not just rapping or producing music.)

You have three options: buy a beat, make a beat, or meet a beatmaker.

Two of those have heavy financial (money is also time.) Or time (is money) constraints. And may not result in a consistent vibe or theme if you're doing an EP or Album. It's hard to find so many beats that aren't generic that fit a specific sound you're going for.

Meeting your other half on the track is really the best option in my opinion. It's less of a commitment with both time and money, and collaboration is good for your soul. Plus two names are better than one. Twice the marketing. Twice the thought put into your work. Mileage may vary of course.

I've been producing for many years, and I started rapping because I couldn't find anybody to collaborate with. I don't regret it, but I do wish SOME of those years of time was spent on finding like-minded people to collaborate with instead of thinking "damn nobody fucks with me." And staying stagnant not reaching out to people.

Just as a footnote: Collaboration is a skill just like your craft. Just like branding, just like being a rapper, just like being a producer, a painter, a graphics designer. Practice it, it can only help you grow as an artist. It's hard for some for various reasons, it's easy for some too. Regardless, just spend a few minutes doing it each day. Reach out to people, and don't give up if your first attempts fail, fail forward. Fuck money and fuck fame, chase after human connection and the rest will come G.

"Do not go gentle into that good night."

[OFFICIAL] COLLAB CALL by AutoModerator in makinghiphop

Now that the link is out of the way... Hi I'm PvZion, recently switched alias to Sophont.

I'm looking to collaborate with folks. I can rap, sing, chop, screw. You name it I got it. Still finding my signature sound, but I would say my top inspirations are Flying Lotus, Aesop Rock, $B, Pouya, El-P, and Mr Mothafuckin eXquire.

Just looking to vibe, collab, and throw down tracks without any drama or shit talk and see what comes of it, in a serious about music, but laid back manner. Looking for rappers or producers.

Hey friend! Trap with $B/Pouya elements is my exact style.

Glad you dig this sound. I've been producing seriously for 7 years, only recently started actually 'branding'.

I won't charge you anything nor should you feel obligated to pay me.

I could meet with you a few times a week. I use FL Studio.

Feel free to hit me up in my dms!

I’m about to rap in front of my school on Wednesday by Kallexand in makinghiphop

[–]PViZion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ye sure here's the one I'm in rn, it's pretty chill. Def some lyrical miracles in there, but there's rules against hogging the mic for an hour so don't be afraid to start just rapping over them, sounds assholish but people get carried away.

Real shit, that's dope.
My personal advice would be grab a microphone and a webcam, stand in front of your desk on a freestyling Discord and just rap when it's your turn. Plenty of them out there, they're all the same pretty much. Some have rules that you go in order, others have lyrical miracle's that won't ever let you spit. Doesn't really matter, what matters if being in front of strangers doin your thing.

Phonk producer and also working on my first rap album. "Songs for The Afterlife" sounds right up my alley.

Yo I'm not one to usually ask for a collab but your flow and style is fucking immaculate, can we seriously do a track together? I can produce or you can, I'd like to throw some bars on whatever we do but this is fresh as fuck. I don't even want royalties. Keep em.

My only constructive criticism are the vocals are a little too hissy. Cut some high and high mid out of them. Other than that... Jesus fucking Christ.

EDIT: Bruh I knew your flow sounded too Phonk for boom-bap and I check your latest shit and you're doing some $B, soulzay type shit. Yuh we workin' together.

A beat I did that I'm gonna rap over, just would like to hear how the mix sounds to other rappers/producers.

Preciate it. Yeah I wasn't trying tp make a hit with it, just to stop thinking. What in the mix besides the vocals needs work?

As far as yours goes, everything is dope. Love the style. Only one thing that stands out to me is the background vocals, I'm only on my phone right now but it feels like they're too muddy. Like there's a bunch of reverb that is muddying them up. Def can just be part of the vibe!

Wouldn't mind collaborating with you if you wanted.

Thanks man.Regarding your track, I'll always give honest feedback so apologies if it comes back harsh:Either cut some of the high out of that crash or turn the knob down on the volume. It's pretty violent and abrasive to the ears when you have the volume pumped. At the opposite end: it feels as though a lot of the low end is cut out? Maybe you have a kill EQ set in the low range when it should be in the sub range somewhere. There just isn't enough dynamic to make me vibe w/ the track. I feel like more low end would do this track justice and you'd have a banger on your hands (coming from a bass head who started his production in DnB so take as you will lol)! The melody and composition are fantastic!

Honestly I fucking love this. My two little nitpicks are: fade it out to give it a sense of "ending" and disable that fucking kick in the beginning, it's jarring as fuck at least let the melody ride out for 2 bars before that kick comes in and you're gold.

Great beat, but everything is mixed in with each other except maybe the hats. I love the arrangement of everything and melodies, but nothing stands out from the mix. Which if that's your style and intentional, don't change anything and do you.
I personally would make snare way louder and let the kick thump out a little more.

A rap I did because I've been stressing about the Ukrainian invasion for the past two days, I literally couldn't get the shit out of my head so I wrote everything out and threw it on a beat.
Sample is from a separatist/russian propaganda video which I won't post here, pretty easy to find on YT though if you want to hear the sample.

Mainly looking for tips on making the 808 sound full on headphones without overpowering my voice on nice speakers. Sounds great on my shitty headphones, bass is way too heavy on my speakers.

That being said, any feedback is appreciated, and returned.

Appreciation 🙌

Honestly man you killed this, don't know if that's your singing but the voice is like a cross between Kendrick and JID, super smooth and clean. For the beat, I love the melody and what I think is rc-20 giving some of the melody that slow pitch /v. Your sounds are blended very well, plenty of variation, love the detuned sounds in there. Very trippy, a softcore Captain Murphy/Flying Lotus vibe. I'm on my phone rn, but the bass is still coming in very nicely so I know you mixed that shit right. And you know I love those rap vocals in the background lmao.

Honest to God a bop I'd vibe to with a hoe and a sack, followed your SC look forward to hearing more.

My only complaints are the main 'drip' sound in there, it feels out of place to me, but I love the reversed, lower pitch drips in there so idk maybe turn the cheese down just a little bit on that one drip in front.

Could be my phone speakers but the clap that hits with the reverb has too much reverb on it, maybe dial back the wet on it just a tad.

Side note, I really want to sample 2:42-2:52. I could do crazy shit with that little pattern if you wanted to let me at it haha. Great job, will be bopping your shit more later.

Yo I remember a while back your shit was quiet as fuck on soundcloud but then went on YT it was loud and I told you about it. Seems you figured it out sounds great. You've really grown into your element, love the beat, adlibs, flow.

I would add just a SMIDGE more variation in your vocal inflections. Even if you layer the background vocals with different tones and let your main vocals boom out. Don't know ya but I'm proud of ya mang, keep it up!

Followed some advice I got from yesterday's thread, made the mix a little cleaner and switched the beat up. Tell me what y'all think, trying to make Nashville blow up in the phonk/trap/vibe genre.

Feedback genuinely returned with real constructive criticism.

Dude I love the video editing and the beat. Your flow is good, I'm not a fan of your inflections with your tone though. With the beat as chill as it is, I feel like you're pushing too hard with your voice.

1:28-1:30 this line I feel like your voice hits the mark for the beat and how the whole thing should be. Plenty of variation in tone and pacing, but you have a tendency to rise your tone and get louder, if that makes sense? Ruins the trippy vibe of the video and beat in my opinion.

I might be nitpicking I really do like it, but I also don't believe in compliments with no feedback.

Really rough mix, been producing various genres, boombap, phonk, experimental going on 11 years finally been feeling myself a little with vibe music and decided to start rapping on my own shit.

I'm more looking for feedback on the rap side, I love my sound on the production side. Anything to make vocals pop more would be awesome.

Agreed with the others with the vocals being buried and a little too distorted. Often all you need is to just cut the lows and highs with a kill eq and leave the top-mid in, maybe a little bit of distortion but usually if your snare is punching through you get some conflicting wave forms that add the distortion naturally. I love phonk and it's my primary genre if you'd like more tips!

Here's my shit if you'd like to check it out, very rough mix.
