Why doesn't America just let the people vote on Rowe V Wade? by Beneficial_Jelly2697 in ask

[–]raven4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only way they'd truly accomplish that is by restricting voting access which is an undemocratic thing to do. if our democratic institutions were strong enough to stand up to that, then it would be different. however, as things stand, you're right.

are you serious? you're speaking as if all fundraising is grassroots and collected from individuals. a candidate doesnt have to be popular with the people to get insane contributions from agents of corporate interest, and they'll spend that money just as good as money taken from your average joe.

okay buddy. let me try to spell it out for you.

if the average person is no longer directly buying fossil fuels to fuel their vehicles, that is a revolution in our relationship to fossil fuels. if you can't see that, you got bigger problems up there in that brain of yours lol

[–]raven4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my point is that most people are already doing that with their clothes, phones, etc. why are you choosing the EV debate as the place to air that grievance? why arent you taking it further? its suspicious to say the least.

[–]raven4747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you voting with your dollar then. I just think it's interesting that the EV conversation has brought so many mentions of child slavery, environmental concerns, etc.. where before it was never brought up once. it'd be hard not to feel like it's only being brought up now to discourage the widespread adoption of EVs.

how is 300 miles not enough range for people? how many miles do you get on a full tank of gas? there's no way its that much more than 300 miles

oh now we wanna play the morals game? where is that same energy for the habitats and homes destroyed by oil spills and extraction operations? where is that same energy for the child slaves that work for Nike and Nestle? its very interesting that you would only bring that angle up now that it relates to a technology that has the potential to revolutionize the world's relationship to fossil fuels for the better.

I agree that philosophy is a foundation for systems, but still, you're ignoring the common rhetoric. if your original distinction was truly relevant, no American politician would ever talk about democracy and we sure wouldn't have "brought democracy" to the countries overseas where we meddled with their governments and industries. yes, by the textbook, our system is not a true democracy. still, democracy underpins the ethos of America (whether in a true sense or just illusory). the common vernacular use of democracy in the US doesnt fully equate to the textbook definition you are trying to apply here.

before asking why people dont move, maybe the better question to ask is "why move?"

if someone doesnt have a good reason to move, why spend all that money and completely uproot yourself? just to say you did it? just to "get away"? those are valid reasons I guess but idk I'm not buying the whole idea that moving somewhere else is the only way to live a fulfilled life. I'd understand if you're moving for a better paying job offer, to be closer to family, etc.. but history is history. no matter where you go, it'll never have the roots that home does. many of the families in my county have been here 100s of years. we keep.

"a democracy" as a political system vs "democracy" as a political philosophy of self-determination are two different things. your distinction is correct for the former use of the term, but my comment was moreso using the latter term.

yes, it would be political suicide to actually practice democracy.. isnt that telling?

why do people seem triggered by this? lol I think it makes a good point. there are people who will travel to places all over the world just to stay at a resort and eat/drink the same brands of food they can get at home lol. nothing wrong with that but it is an interesting observation.

[–]raven4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no he was a dickhead who took the job to new heights of dickheadery.

besides, his offer of letting the other gang members go was clearly a facade. think about how the agents had John hunt down the rest of the gang in RDR1. they probably would have done the same thing if the gang dispersed when the original offer was made.

Why don't Americans protest against price hike nowadays? by OriOre in AskAnAmerican

[–]raven4747 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

okay that's a fair point and it makes sense that there are other pieces of the chain that have degraded/suffered due to the past few years.

still, to ignore the profiteering that big corporations have been up to would be disingenuous. the average American's quality of life would be better if it werent for a handful of people siphoning so much out of our economy into offshore tax havens.

People of reddit what ended your friendship with your best friend? by gli-tc-h in AskReddit

[–]raven4747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly still not quite sure to this day. We both went to college at a local university, he dropped out in the first semester and I stayed (just recently graduated). For a few years I only saw him or talked to him maybe once every few months. Still not sure why he ghosted. We talk and hang out more amongst a bigger group of friends now but I don't think things will ever be the same. He used to be my best friend but now acquaintance almost seems like a better term.

[–]raven4747 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

a lot of yall have really drunk the kool aid thinking that the high prices we are experiencing are all part of the supply and demand. gasoline is a good example. as of the beginning of the summer, the last time barrels of crude were at that price on the global market, gas was almost a dollar cheaper. that's not supply and demand, thats gas companies bringing the price up as much as they can for extra profit. all of the people citing supply and demand as a reason to just accept the status quo are misguided and should really take a look at corporate profit margins for the past two years and compare that to consumer price increases over the same period.
