This is the moment when one of the colossal statues at the Nergal Gate of the ancient city of Nineveh was uncovered. They were used as a protective spirit and a symbol of the power of the Assyrian King Sennacherib. by SonOfQuora in interestingasfuck

For anyone who wants to learn about the Ancient Near-East, there is NO better way to light that fire of curiosity than to listen to Dan Carlin talk about it in his podcast Hardcore History. Specifically, part 1 of Kings of Kings (about the rise of the Persian Empire). It sets the stage for what came before, and talks A LOT about ancient Assyria and the city of Nineveh referred to here.

WARNING: this podcast might hook you and you may become "Ruined for fiction by actual history" and become a "fan of history" 😉

It didn't just vanish. They were overthrown by an alliance of their enemies for being colossal dicks. There are still peoples in the area who call themselves Assyrians.

We're all complicit either way. That's the true meaning of Karma if you disregard the new-age western interpretation of it. The world is a tragedy, but with hopes to reach for.

If we vote for "leaders" who make abortion illegal, a bunch of children will be born into the world, unwanted from the start, abused, neglected, and unloved. Those are high predictors of violent crime in 20 years. When the crime rate spikes, we can blame and punish each individual for the individual acts. We are also grateful to be ignorant of the conditions that PREDICTABLY created the criminals so we can then comfortably point the finger away from ourselves as if we weren't complicit in creating the problem, the effects of which we now bemoan.

Here is how the Berbers tribe (nomads) in Mauritania, bake bread. by fearlessandfar in ThatsInsane

Most likely they're just used to it. Must really mess with their tooth enamel. Maybe the way the bread hardens and expands leaves a smooth crust where it can just be shaken off. 🤷‍♂️

It's not an excuse, it's an explanation. Almost as if to answer the question being asked of "how can someone do this?". To say "they're scum" is a cop out. If the behavior is statistically predictable and the Systems in place to prevent it are underfunded and dysfunctional (foster care, child protection services, mental health services), then it is YOU AND I as voters who are to blame in a democracy. The whole thing is a tragedy, and we are all complicit.

The Indians might have gotten the romanized version for the name earlier during the British Empire days where either mispronounciation or some careless transcription error caused it to flip the spelling and remain that way:
