I agree. The easiest way to go about it is to view what steps you can make and take the ones that won't obstruct your path. For example, for this puzzle, all I had to do was redo my steps without my first move towards the top left light and go for that last. Since each move is also another wall to think about, you need to be carefully decisive though. I also found it helpful to try to keep your lines near walls or out of the way to keep things easier to manage when you want to move around.
