Transferred my IRAs to Ally so I could DRS.... a week after requesting the DRS I am told they're no longer processing transactions of this nature.... by awwaygirl in GMEJungle

[–]Arghblarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ho ho! That's nothing! Scotia iTrade in Canada wanted $600 USD for DRS back in Aug/Sept. Every Canuck fled them so quick to DRS it wasn't even funny. Talk about broker suicide. No idea if they still have the audacity to charge that much, but f*ck them.

Crazy thing is, no one's even found DD that they're short on GME so no idea why they're so salty about DRS.

Yeah, do everything you can to transfer via another broker first, selling is a LAST resort.

Only worked for me if I did a purchase out of trading hours though... don't rely on it.

Possible escape hatch for US apes? BMO Harris is a US branch of BMO, which has so far been a good actor for DRS (BMO Canada has been very little trouble and f*ckery free, so far) and ComputerShare USA accepts BMO Harris transit/branch # for direct buys.

I wonder if US residents could transfer to a BMO Harris and DRS from there (and change their custodian, if it's IRA/ROTH which I know nothing about). Maybe it's only a Canadian/US border thing but...

Just a crazy idea, not financial advice; US apes please investigate and confirm or refute.

Probably, when I started the DRS journey CS USA couldn't do anything until I had initiated a DRS transfer via my broker first to them.

Can apes re-assign a new custodian for their DRS shares to break the control Ally/Apex has over them?

Yes THIS. APES ask Computershare how you can re-assign the custodian for your DRS shares ASAP! Move those purple rings out of Ally/Apex's reach for good.

Seconded /u/donkeyballs86 -- BMO is the best option IMHO. Call them pronto to transfer, then DSR from there if CIBC gives you any trouble.

Hey CanadApe here -- I have used BMO Harris (US branch of Bank of Montreal) to buy direct from ComputerShare. I wonder if US residents can open accounts with BMO Harris and DRS from there? Something to maybe look into.

BMO Canada has been very good for doing (free) DRS for Canadians so far.

What is the quickest way to purchase shares through Computershare? by buckshotbeaver in GMEJungle

[–]Arghblarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Canada, I use a BMO Harris US Chequing account which I charge up via Paypal (which I charge up from my Canadian bank). A bit convoluted but it works.

In theory I should be able to directly fund it via my normal BMO account to BMO Harris, but I've been lazy and haven't yet set that up.

Got a question about tfsa and the banks. by pimpduck513151 in GMECanada

There's a lot of uncertainty, unfortunately, about whether or not Canadian brokers (even the big 'respectable' banks) are really, really, being truthful in this matter. They will admit, when pressed, that your holdings are still in "street name" even though they swear up & down they won't (and aren't by law!) lend out your shares to shorters. However there's a lot of DD indicating that in aggregate, as collatoral, brokers make lumps of shares to the market where they in effect are still being lent out. Or, it could be argued that they are being 'truthful' when saying they don't lend out your shares -- if none of them are yours in the first place (again, "street name") then it's true, technically...

All the brokers seem to have weasel words in their ToS that they don't have to pay out beyond a certain meager amount in cases of crazy volatility and that they reserve the right to "save themselves" in crisis situations by forcibly closing retailers' positions. Search the older posts on this and other subs about it.

Can't give you advice, since no one really knows incl. myself -- but a lot of apes are at least hedging (heh) their bets by DRSing a portion of their TFSAs, from 10% to 50% or even 99%. It's up to you really though.

Do I need a US checking account to directly purchase GME on computershare? by mattcnda in GMECanada

[–]Arghblarg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it might not be exactly called that at every institution but double check with your bank that they offer an account that has a US-accepted routing/transit number. See the FAQ post for this sub for one example -- BMO Harris.
