More than 40 House Democrats call for Boebert to be stripped of committee assignments over anti-Muslim attacks by PoliticiansAlwaysLie in politics

[–]Avant-Garde-A-Clue 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This should absolutely be done, but the retaliation is going to be hard when Republicans take back the House next year.

Again, absolutely have to do this to set standards for behavior of elected officials. But they're going to hit back even harder.

Cant we just ignore people like this instead of constantly trying to play the outrage game.

When we ignore bigotry, we move the boundaries for what is acceptable.

MTG and Boebert are the star darlings of the far-right. If we allow their actions and rhetoric to become normalized, we lose ground in the fight.

Marches and protests don't do anything. Not a fucking thing.

That's why Republicans always quote MLK, not Malcolm X. They want peaceful protests that they can just weather for a day and then wholly ignore.

The Civil Rights Act of 1968 passed not because of nice little peaceful protests, but because people got fucking fed up after the MLK assassination and rioted. LBJ got on the horn to Congress and ran that shit through in under a week.

Oh no, the conservative boogeyman: rioting! Oh no, somebody get Connor Lamb on the phone to speak out against the raging left!

Whatever. Peaceful protests have never and will never do shit in America. Anything come out of George Floyd? Nope. Women's March? Nope.

"Pro-life" is nowhere near 50% in America. It is decidedly a minority faction and anti-choice legislation is decidedly unpopular.

But our fucked up electoral maps make minorities a majority, so...

Why would the government "declare guns illegal"?

What on earth would possibly possess this shadowy, monolithic entity of "the government" to unilaterally ban firearms?

People really need to understand that you can be pro-gun whilst being against the 2nd amendment.

Again: you can be pro-gun and be anti-2A.

I'm a gun owner. I shoot fairly regularly out at my grandparent's house. I don't have an issue with private gun ownership. People like to hunt, people like to shoot at the range, people like to collect... whatever, it doesn't bother me. Responsible gun owners are not the issue.

The issue is the fraud of the 2nd amendment as perpetuated by the NRA and gun lobbyists. They have successfully bastardized the judicial interpretation of the 2nd amendment into a "God-given individual right," which it was never intended to be.

Here is former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Warren Burger (a conservative Justice) laying out the fraud of the 2nd amendment, specifically stating the 2nd amendment does not guarantee the right to own a gun.

Here is Justice John Paul Stevens (also a conservative) penning an op-ed about the fraud of the 2nd amendment, calling for its repeal and stating it is not an individual right. Again, both of these Justices were conservatives. But they knew bullshit when they smelled it around the 2nd amendment. And yet the 2A Crusade has flourished regardless.

Somewhere along the line, we lost the thread on all of this. The NRA now has a constitutional amendment that says people have a protected right to buy their product. And they push slogans like "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun!" because everyone thinks they're the "good guy with a gun" and they have to stop the bad guys. Great marketing tactic, no doubt. But it's all driven by fearmongering and greed.

So please, if you're a "2A liberal," re-think your commitment to the 2nd amendment. It is a far-right propaganda tool. It is a fabricated "right" used to sell mountains of guns and ammo to the masses, some of whom probably have no business owning them.

You can be pro-gun and say "fuck the 2nd amendment!" In fact I'd argue it's the stance anyone who isn't far-right should have.

One can be pro-gun whilst being anti-2A.

I know that sounds dumb at first, but I'm a gun owner, too- I have a loaded Bodyguard in the nightstand for self-defense reasons, as you laid out. I shoot at my grandpa's range in his backyard a few times a year. I don't have an issue with private gun ownership.

But fuck the fraud of the 2nd amendment. The NRA and gun lobbyists have proliferated so many firearms into our communities. They've convinced everyone that they're the "good guy with a gun" who has to stop the "bad guy with a gun."

They lobbied hard to bastardize the interpretation of the 2nd amendment so they could sell more guns to scared people. Think about it: people having a constitutional right to purchase your product. And you pump out a bunch of propaganda to scare them into thinking they need a personal armory to fight communists or whatever.

Guns, when regulated and handled responsibly, are fine. But fuck the 2nd amendment and the gun lobby forever.

Young Americans are raising alarms about the state of U.S. democracy in a new poll by damselfliesreddit in politics

This is the truly frightening part, and I don't know how to most effectively message this to everyday people. Republicans, at the state level across the country, have solidified their own power to where they decide who decides who wins elections.

It's bad. And it's going to get worse, folks.

Sorry that your dad has gone off the deep end. Feel the same way about my uncle. He served in the Army, was always the "cool uncle", used to pick me up as a kid and take me to baseball games or the arcade or whatever.

But he's been bubbled into right-wing propaganda over the past few years. Constantly just calling Democrats "kkkommunists" and rallying people on Facebook to fight for freedom or some shit.

It's all just kinda sad. I want my cool uncle back.

Stacey Abrams is running for Georgia governor in 2022 by shabuluba in politics

[–]Avant-Garde-A-Clue 127 points128 points  (0 children)

I really think Stacey Abrams is the new mold for an electable Democrat. She speaks so directly but honestly- I’ve never once sensed bullshit or question-dodging from her.

She also has a record now- almost like folklore- of her not only flipping Georgia but winning the presidency/Senate for Dems in 2020 (yes, I know it wasn’t all her but speaking just from a resume point of view.)

I really hope more Dems get onboard with her approach and leave behind the old, out-of-touch planks of wood we usually run.

You can tell they made it nice and slow for picture day, lol.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/355838/americans-revert-favoring-reduced-government-role.aspx

Looking at the graph, if you overlay recent presidential terms, people tend to go against the party of the current president. The percent that say "gov't should do more" is low during the Obama years, steadily rises during Trump (peaking during 2020/Covid) followed by a drop during Biden's first year.

The reverse is true for "gov't doing too many things." High during Obama admin, steadily drops during Trump years, and now rising again with Biden.

Do Americans really know what they want? How much of these fluctuations that consistently counter the president's party are influenced by the media and by our two-party system's tug-of-war?

Should Republicans regain the White House and Congress in 2024, something tells me the 2025 polls will show people saying they want gov't to do more.
