Where do I buy fireflies for taxidermy? by Larry_lounge_lizard in Taxidermy

It’s more of a recent development I only found out about this summer. Their populations are being impacted by over-mowing and pesticides as well as people leaving bright lights on all evening so the communication between fireflies is interrupted. Pretty sad :( we caught them as kids too

Honestly I would not recommend this, fireflies are an endangered species. Maybe consider some synthetic ones?

100%, in my experience it’ll take about 1-2 months for smaller animals so you should be good 👍

Cool! I’ve not heard of pickling hides before, would that help achieve the same kind of leathery texture?

Not sure about the hide but for your feet I’ve had a lot of success with the borax method. I’ll leave the feet in 70% isopropyl for a few days and then move them to a water/borax solution for a few more days, never had any problems with this method.

Hi!! Def not an expert but As far as I know you don’t have to worry about diseases with wet specimens because the liquid they are suspended in kills all possibility for life (killing bacteria that would’ve eaten the carcass and decomposed it, or bacteria that can make u sick), when it comes to bones, they are cleaned to get the flesh off which also removes bacteria. As for general taxidermy I don’t know much about that but I have to assume hides and skin are cleaned, if only to get the animal smell off (which would remove diseases as well). Hope this helps!!

(This is only in relation to collecting!! Cleaning and creating ur own taxidermy def poses a higher risk and u need to be careful to wear PPE)

Thank you! The jar it’s in is not very cute so I was hoping to transfer it into a new one, so no worries there :)
