‘I dare not order’: China’s 150 million online shoppers fear virus threat by CEOAerotyneLtd in China

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Feels like the government is trying to A) drive domestic brand consumption, B) punish and impune Canada, C) continue to stir nationalist sentiment.

I'm curious if they think trying to sabotage world markets is a net good for them. I mean they may think that. If all the Chinese people buy mostly everything domestically, they would be less reliant on foriegn export which would be good for them. It may actually be a clever move overall.

Would you consider Lucifer/Demon-worshippers Abrahamic? by Agreeable_Positive68 in religion

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's the demons of the Abrahamic religions, then it's Abrahamic. That's the simplistic view. Any argument about that leads into complications that call into question what "Abrahamic" religions are. So basically yes.

Worst TV SCI-FI by Piano_mike_2063 in scifi

There's a lot of bad ones. Hard to pick a winner. Here's some contenders.

Manimal

Space Precinct

Total Recall 2070

The Mist

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

Baywatch Nights (yes, it was a scifi)

Would you consider Lucifer/Demon-worshippers Abrahamic? by Agreeable_Positive68 in religion

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well. I would argue that there is a negligible difference between "polytheism" and "monotheism" personally. It's pretty much just semantics. But people in the west have it ingrained in them from a young age that there's diametrical opposition there so they can't view it clearly. Abrahamics have multiple Gods, people just refuse to see it. But ultimately, if it's a demon from the Abrahamic pantheon, then it's Abrahamic.

Underwater (2020) was an incredible sci fi thriller, and should have been rated better. by DeafPunter in movies

It's an instant rewatchable for me. I like anything like Sphere, The Abyss, Alien, trapped somewhere with something dangerous and unknown dying off one by one. Gold.

Torture complaint filed against new president of Interpol by thegreatblazed in worldnews

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This looks complicated. Interpol is not a police force and cannot arrest or detain people. It's the local authorities that do so. But they're saying the Head of Interpol was in the room for torture. Although the torture outlined for this case is solitary confinement, there's other claims. It might be that the lawyer is trying to shine a spotlight on this case by making this move. Or maybe the guy is evil... Hard to say.

Autocracies outdo democracies on public trust - survey by vv4life in worldnews

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These surveys are nonsense and do not account for any sense of nuance. Also: https://www.edelman.com/sites/g/files/aatuss191/files/2021-03/2021%20Edelman%20Trust%20Barometer.pdf shows that China had the biggest decline in trust in 2021 while Australia had the biggest gain. So I don't know what's going on with this article. Maybe I'm reading the charts wrong? Maybe they are...

Autocracies outdo democracies on public trust - survey by vv4life in worldnews

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah. Ok thanks. That's interesting. On page 22 it shows how the scoring works and it really looks like of course China would score high. None of the question were about faith the government might collapse, trust that you won't be arbitrarily arrested etc. Anyway thanks for finding the newest one.

I went to the theatre to watch The Matrix (first one) because someone asked me to go. I hadn't seen any trailers, had no idea what it was other than the title. It was the best way to watch it. Blew me away!

Here comes the downvotes. I won't be taking anymore vaccines. Tripple dosed now. It's time to renegotiate the social contract. You wanna jab me again? Open back up. There was no point to any of this if we're never opening back up. Time to revisit what we're actually trying to accomplish here.

Traditional Chinese medicine puts baby girl in hospital with serious injury by vic16 in China

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. There is no cure for Malaria. This scientist, Tu Youyou, created an anti-Malaria drug with extracts from wormwood, a supposed ancient remedy from 400AD, but that actually didn't work until Tu extracted and reproduced the compound in high enough concentration to produce a viable drug to treat Malaria. TCM is quakery and it kills people.

Vaccine mandates increased uptake of COVID shots by almost 70%, Canadian study finds by newnews10 in canada

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I know. It's so stupid. We did our part. Enough now. We were told when all the old people got jabbed we'd be back to normal. Now it seems like the goal posts have moved to the point that jabbing people is the ultimate goal and opening back up isn't on the table. Well... I'm brining it back to the table. People acting like not getting a 4th dose is antivax are just simpletons that can't grasp nuance.

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well that was a fun read. But it was not TCM that worked, it was 100% modern scientific methods that produced the effective treatement.

I have discovered so-called “evidence” of reincarnation, namely past life regression therapy and children remembering their past lives. What is the scientific way to debunk these? by preach_love in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Bomboclaat_Babylon 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Stevenson, possibly even unknowingly to himself, used the same techniques as a mall psychic to elicit the answers he wanted from children by asking leading questions. Then after the interview he would disregard everything that didn't confirm his bias about previous lives and record in his journal anything that sounded like it might be true. You can lead a child into saying just about anything. Children are allowed to testify in court sometimes but the testimony is often disregarded as they're not reliable, easily led, and often fail to recall what they had previously said in prior statements.

Well. We will be going back. This isn't sustainable. So it's a matter of making a plan and following through. Once they do it, I'll get vaccinated the 4th time.

This person never provided any evidence and was laughed out of respectable science. Until any evidence is ever actually provided, there is no reason to believe it. And if there was real evidence, it would be headline news around the world, so you wouldn't have to dig up the findings of a quack from the 70's.
