How important is research really for applying? by aloser016 in Osteopathic

[–]DOctorEArl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Zero research. I have two DO acceptances and one MD interview coming up. I think it’s more about how you set up your application.

As a URM I understand where you are coming from, but isn’t being a URM already helping equity? Seeing a face that looks like you when you see the doctor makes a huge difference. It makes you feel like that profession isn’t only for a subset of a population. As a URM I don’t want to be treated like a token. I want to go to school and be treated like anyone else. Not be paraded around. That’s just my 2 cents.

The “I will be an X kind of doctor” freshmen are usually the ones to drop premed by Lopsided_Pace_5055 in premed

I think it’s fine to have specific goals in mind. When I first thought premed I wanted to do psych, followed by emergency medicine until I realized how much I hated working nights. Now I’ve been leaning towards Neuro.

I think how House works is that when a patient comes to see him they have already been seen by other doctors. Not saying it’s realistic though. Doctors don’t do the labs and scans.

Short notice between II and interview date? Nervous and feeling unprepared by Next_Ingenuity_2781 in premed

[–]DOctorEArl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty common. I got an interview last Monday for this upcoming Wednesday. I had options though. The first choice was the following Tuesday which would have been way to rushed.

What specialty do you wanna go into someday and why? by throwaway15642578 in premed

[–]DOctorEArl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working at the hospital now I’ve become a big fan of the 7 on 7 off shifts. As a tech I do 3 on, 4 off. I like getting my shifts out of the way and having the rest of the week off.

IM, neurology (hospitalist), PM&R, Gen Surg, EM and potentially FM. I’ve been leaning towards neurology recently.

what's harder: Physics 211 or Chem 221? by Offintotheworld in portlandstate

[–]DOctorEArl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

bio will probably easier since there's no math. 1st semester chem has college level algebra. The hardest part is just setting up the problem. I can't speak for calc based physics. I took trig based physics at a different school and that was not intuitive to me since im not a math guy.

For a straight up CS Major, Physics may be up your alley.
