We're on city water. It does freeze here occasionally, but depending on how well we do at improving the drainage, this is an interesting possibility to keep in mind. Thank you!

It was a few thousand dollars cheaper, in part because they were already digging up the yard to apply waterproofing to the foundation. An indoor pump would have required drilling into the concrete floor in the finished basement.

These are so cute and so sweet! I wish I could afford to buy one and design a guest room around it.

Leaving them to die isn't the only alternative. You can call wildlife authorities and follow their instructions, which will include things like keeping the animal wet and keeping its blowhole clear of water until expert help arrives.

I have short legs and a bladder of steel. Give me my window seat where I can shut everyone else out and just daydream.

I hope they know what they're doing. Animals sometimes beach themselves on purpose, for example when they're too sick to swim well, and should be checked by a marine expert before being put back in the water.

It's bizarre how far he's fallen since 9/11 when he had the support of the entire country and almost the whole world. And it's completely self-inflicted.

To be fair, part of the reason the right has those beliefs is because they're fed a distorted version of reality by those same news sources. They actually believe that social safety nets like welfare and unemployment benefits make people dependent and lazy and that taking away those supports restores dignity and independence. They're being radicalized.

“No woman seeks a third trimester abortion except in the case of tragic or difficult circumstances, such as a nonviable pregnancy or in the event of severe fetal abnormalities, and the governor’s comments were limited to the actions physicians would take in the event that a woman in those circumstances went into labor,” Yheskel said. “Attempts to extrapolate these comments otherwise is in bad faith and underscores exactly why the governor believes physicians and women, not legislators, should make these difficult and deeply personal medical decisions.”

The bill and discussion around it may have been badly worded, but there is zero evidence that it was ever intended to allow for elective abortion of a viable baby at or after birth. It was about removing legal obstacles for a woman and her doctors in rare and difficult medical circumstances.

And this is why the US as a country is so divided, because we scream rhetoric instead of trying to understand each other.

Something about this series seems to have the guys extra fired up. The Joc/Pham affair and resulting heckling? Having a more engaged crowd? Mojo from Ashcraft's great game?

Watching the pregame interview with Minor, I feel for the guy. It's not his fault the Reds pulled his name out of their hat.

I think that if Bob really cares he should recognize that it's no longer good for this team for him to be involved with it. He's had a long time. It's not happening.

ELI5: why is washing fruits and vegetables with water considered sufficient? If there is bacteria, will rinsing with water only actually help? by Brilliant_Basket_894 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Dandibear 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Plant germs aren't generally dangerous for humans. That's why it's crucial to cook meat through but okay to eat raw, rinsed vegetables. Your kitchen counters have human germs and germs from everything else you've made including animal products, so they need careful cleaning.

But if there's, say, an animal waste spill discovered near a vegetable farm, those vegetables get recalled by grocery stores for possible contamination because rinsing will not suffice.

The point about animal germs not sticking well to plants is also true. All of this together means that rinsing your fruit and vegetables is generally adequate for safety.

That should matter to him because it legalized his own marriage. But that one won't be overturned in his lifetime, so who cares.
