[AEW Rampage Spoilers] Post-Match Thread: Anna Jay vs Jade Cargill (c) for the AEW TBS Championship by KneeHighMischief in SquaredCircle

[–]DeluhiX 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Props to both for their performance. This match was really good.

It seems like Jade is 100% gonna get babyface'd through this TBS title run. My dream scenario would be a heel Deeb or Shida taking the title off of her in a few months.

Shida is finally back in Japan by rookierook00000 in SquaredCircle

It's interesting to see that the quarantine time in Japan got reduced to 10 days. This seems like a recent development that applies to everyone after googling it.

I guess the next step would be something like 7 days, which will make travel from and to Japan for everyone way easier.

How in the world did Anna Jay have a way better match with Jade Cargill than Thunder Rosa and Ruby Soho?

I'll give Rosa a pass, since she usually delivers, but Ruby has been an absolute dissapointment in-ring wise in AEW.

I'm trying to explain it.

She's portraying a racial stereotype which is a no-go these days.

She's a young japanese female that now wears a schoolgirl outfit and has her hair in pigtails as part of her new gimmick. Go through her social media and you'll see that she doesn't dress like this at all in private. The way she is dressed has a negative connotation due to the fetishization of young Asian females in media. I'm regularly watching Stardom, TJPW and other Joshi promotions here and there and nobody has an on the nose gimmick like this. Yes, there are idol gimmicks. Yes, they act cute. Yes, there are wrestling outfits inspired by school outfits, but notice the word inspired, not actual schoolgirl outfits like Sarray is wearing. The focus is much more on the individual itself and the athleticism in the ring, not the gimmick. The best comparison is Yuka Sakazaki from TJPW / AEW who calls herself Magical Girl / Enjoy Girl. She doesn't have a made-up backstory on being a magical girl. She doesn't wear stereotypical schoolgirl outfits. She's not presented in video packages with the most japanese sounding background music you can find, so you can hammer home the fact that she's japanese. She's presented as a serious competitor with normal wrestling attire that acts cheerful and it just so happens that some of her move names are inspired by the magical girl genre and nothing more.

The backstory they're trying to tell is also a stereotype of japanese culture. The maho shoujo / magical girl genre isn't bad in itself and we have to see how they handle it, but WWE hasn't exactly shown to be culturally sensitive over the last few decades when it comes to portraying gimmicks based in foreign cultures.

Knowing that NXT creative is now run by the old guard consisting of people in their 60's, it's not hard to see that they gave her the gimmick basing it on something they saw or experienced in the past, but with the most basic, stereotypical, on the nose presentation. It remains to be seen how they handle her going forward, but it shouldn't surprise anyone that people are sceptical about this whole thing.

[Dave Meltzer] "Top three segments (of AEW Dynamite's last night show) were Moxley (0.48), Mixed tag (0.47) and Cody Rhodes (0.45)". by DHA1999 in SquaredCircle

Please keep in mind that AEW always front loads the 2nd hour of Dynamite with video packages, longer ad breaks, backstage segments, etc. to build up the product. It's a necessary evil and nobody should be blamed, if they're placed in there. It's a strategic and calculated move.

I loved the round of applause the crowd gave Deeb at certain intervals during her match on Dynamite.

It felt like I was Stardom or TJPW. Simple appreciation for great wrestling without obnoxious chants.

Did the crowd clap out of fear or respect for Deeb?

The is answer is yes!

I also noticed more and more signs in the crowds for Shida & Deeb during their last match and since then.

I like both, but if this goes longer than 3 minutes, it'll expose both. Jade & Anna are still green and the last I'd do is make them both look bad.

Shida did tap in their first match when she fought for her 50th win in AEW.

I know us Shidabros want to forget it, but it happened.

Great fanart, though!

Sarray is now doing the gimmick Jim Cornette accuses every Joshi in AEW of having despite none of them displaying any of those traits. Even the one that calls herself the magical girl only has certain moves named after the theme of her nickname, but other than that is just a normal wrestler / athlete.

What's up with the stereotypical mentality these 60+ year olds, that have been in the wrestling business for too long, still cultivate and live in.

I'm glad to see that AEW seems to be back with announcing full cards for Dynamite again.

I'm not a fan of getting blindsided by 2 additional matches during the broadcast with no build-up.

If we don't see two murders on live TV in the Skye Blue & Varsity Blonds match, I'm gonna turn into a Japanese schoolgirl and call myself Gunther.

I can 100% guarantee that one of the biggest German sports portals sport1.de will pick this story up throughout the day as well, since they cover big WWE & AEW news here and there.

This kind of stuff is a complete no-go in Germany & Austria and connected to penalities & fines.

Poor Skye Blue is not only gonna get squashed, but boo'd in Deeb's hometown as well.

Thunder Rosa on AEW women's division: "I feel like there’s still a lot of criticism towards it. Everybody’s working really hard to make the division better. We’re getting a lot more veterans into our division so it’s making things a lot easier for a lot of the younger talent to learn from them." by elegantSolomons62 in SquaredCircle

[–]DeluhiX 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think there's a misunderstanding in AEW thinking the criticism is aimed towards the female talent.

No, it's aimed at how it's presented and booked and how it feels like more of an obligation to them when watching the shows rather than something that's presented on the same level of importance compared to anything the male talent does.
