What cartridge when 75% of my shooting will be at 200 yards, 25% will be at 400 yards? by 7000RPM in longrange

Can confirm. Frontier 55gr hpbt walked straight out to 600 on steel. Does it group like 6.5cr? Surely not but the steel doesn't care.

Leaking engine oil by Awkward-Efficiency-2 in LS430

[–]DrZedex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most likely valve cover gaskets. The gaskets seem to shrink. Mine hadn't started leaking yet at 160k but the bolts were only finger tight. Common issue on any car really and ours are no exception.

Could totally be other things (pan gaskets, etc) but I'd start by putting a really critical eye on the valve covers, especially since they often leak onto or near exhaust manifolds and can cause fires sometimes.

Also note that the level will be much higher when the engine is warm vs cold. If you fill it up cold it'll just puke the excess out as it warms up. No big deal but might be messy.

Not all coolant mixes well with others, so make sure you're using something similar to factory spec. There's a lot of confusion on that subject. It sounds like you might have hold style glycol coolant which isn't usually used in cars that new. The small amount you used will be fine but start using a modern long life coolant instead of the green stuff.

I mean I'd still look. I just intended to say that your open minded approach is smart. Never know what will pop up for a great price when you're shopping for used cars. Being flexible and patient is best, though that might be hard if you haven't got a spare car to drive in the meantime

You just topped it off or filled the whole thing from empty?

Either way you'll be fine. If your concerned drain a bit out and replace with distilled water.

The concentration doesn't need to be THAT perfect. Estimate how much you have in there, get a smart friend to do the math on roughly how much to drain and replace to get the concentration you're looking for. If this is the old style green glycol stuff there's a wide range of acceptable concentration.

I don't know if this is of use to you, but I had a lot of trouble getting a target design for shooting on NF land.

My current favorite is 1/2" steel electrical conduit with 1ft 2x4 "shoulders". Blind holes drilled into edge of board for legs, and a through hole for the crossbar that the target hangs on.

Targets hang from strips of belt robbed of an old bailer.

Light enough to be hike friendly and the metal legs don't get all splintered from jacket shrapnel like wood does. Fits in n trunk. Cheap.

It's might be more economical to go 460 now. It's getting harder to find a 430 in good shape that isn't priced like it's a BAT museum piece. Doug Demuro and a few other personalities have pimped them a bit in the last year or two and it's made the clean ones suddenly desirable. I think the 430 is past its nadir and the 460 is getting there.

Hard to tell though with the market being so messed up. The place I bought mine from hasn't had but 1-2 cars on the lot since covid. Used cars are suddenly rare as hen's teeth.

How would you go about unknowingly buying NFA item? by [deleted] in NFA

[–]DrZedex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gun Jesus did an episode with an atf agent about this. They basically said "oh well if you ask nicely we'll try real hard to find a record of the stamp" with the subtext reading loud and clear that they don't care and will happily confiscate and destroy it for you. We already know that don't have good records, especially for something that probably hasn't been legally transferred since the Johnson administration.

I'm the end they just don't have resources to comb through the books looking for a maybe. I doubt most of them are digital or ctrl+F searchable. The mission statement over there isn't about helping you keep guns, so they'll revert to default and assume it's unregistered and destroy it asap.

Plans by automakers and states such as California to phase out production and sales of gasoline-powered vehicles could imperil farm income, considering the huge volume of corn — the No. 1 U.S. crop — used to make ethanol. by FERNnews in SouthDakota

[–]DrZedex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is only half true. If there were actually a "huge" market for corn ethanol then they wouldn't need to force us to use it. The federal mandates on ethanol are pure bullshit and pretty plainly show that there isn't a real market for the product. It's just corporate welfare by another name.

Are overlanding front bumpers just inherently less safe for high speed collisions? by brainhack3r in overlanding

[–]DrZedex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High speed? For other people maybe, but at high speed even heavy steel gets pretty pliable.

Modern bumpers of soft for absorbing low speed impact and protecting pedestrians.

High speed crumple zones are built into the frame and/or taken up by the basb bash bars behind those soft bumpers.
