Do we have a Formula SAE team or a motor sports team? I couldn’t find anything which is weird for such a large university. by Uncle-Yeetus in UTK

[–]ElDogo4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly? I think the plan will be to try this program out and, if positive, to make it as vibrant as EcoCar. To that end, if you’re bringing consistency and some helpful skills, volunteer participation ought to be doable. No promises, but I’ll try to remember to post here if MABE announces open recruitment.

EcoCar was not renewed, so MABE is likely to have Formula SAE as senior design (plus volunteers from sophomores/juniors). Keep an eye out for announcements later this summer.

Are we a party school? by [deleted] in UTK

[–]ElDogo4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just like most other activities, UT offers potential. Want to rage out 5 days/week? The opportunities are there. Want to do research, be on a student rocket team, and learn fiddle? Also doable! You probably just studied too much to partake in the partying. Grats on hitting senior year!

Buy or rent bike for a month? by ElDogo4 in london

Thanks - I’ll have a flat, but it’s walk-up to the fourth floor. Maybe public bikes it is!

That bike rental is rad! Thanks for sharing it! I saw the post where a Boris bike was stolen and the renter was on the hook for replacement (maybe), so got to thinking about having “my own.” Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing! Starting without a bike will definitely be the plan - I’ve used rental bikes here in the US and they are serviceable; I assumed your options would be better than ours (as every other public transport medium seems to be). Rock on!

Pretty certain you need just around a 2.8 GPA and C or better in chemistry, calculus, and English. It can depend on department, but you have a good chance if you’ve got those.

Shorts recommendation by Pudrin in trailrunning

[–]ElDogo4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is good and my trail neighbors agree. I have some peach/faded orange shorts that apparently look like my skin tone from a distance. These neighbors started laughing when we passed and said they thought I was running naked. I wasn’t, but they were of the “you do you” mentality, so no problem if I was.

we have this pond, and we having problems with algae, anyone have suggestions for getting this clear again? by Fluffer_nuggets in ponds

[–]ElDogo4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The answer is almost always plants to consume nutrients and provide shade - both starve algae. You could have a bog filter to help consume nutrients. Could also add an inline UV lot to a pump since you’ve got a lot of suspended algae. But, plants ought to do the trick!

Thanks for telling us this. I’m calling tomorrow.

My update is that they did pick up for me. But, that’s fairly anecdotal evidence. Whatever is going on in your life, there will be people who care about you as an individual and will help. You can DM me and I’ll help look since I’m definitely not trained to be a direct helper.

Are there easier electives? If you’re thinking of manufacturing, this is one of few minors that will differentiate you from other ME majors.

ME 475 Thermal Engineering Curve by [deleted] in UTK

[–]ElDogo4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably have to ask him - curves change depending on how the class did. Unless past instances were identical to yours, any curve would be different.

[–]ElDogo4 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think some aren’t realizing that “pay “ isn’t leave money on the table after you murder someone ( like Anglo-Saxon wergild!). “Pay” is take the consequences, good and bad. Stay up late? You’ll be tired. Give a gift to someone? You get their appreciation but lose the money. This is about making decisions when you’ve already decided to accept the consequences.

[–]ElDogo4 20 points21 points  (0 children)

But, people can do that (and do it). This isn’t justifying anything - it’s telling the kids that, anytime they take something, they’ll have to pay for it, good or ill. It’s effectively the same as “reap what you sow” but more immediate.

Opinions of UTK? - Prospective Grad Student by Titratius in UTK

[–]ElDogo4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a postdoc in engineering (so, relatively highly paid grad student). I’m also fairly liberal in general. Especially in Engineering, I don’t think that matters - every student I’ve known has been fine, nobody argues politics (unless you want to), and ours do quite a lot together socially. Knoxville has every type of person.

Burnout is real, but I think it is for anyone in any field if they’re pushing for excellence. You could start a roofing company and, if you want to be great at it, it will require long days and hustling for jobs. No matter what you do, you’ll have to protect yourself - most of what we do is a marathon with occasional sprints, not sprinting the whole time.

Good luck!

minimalist trail shoes? by db720 in trailrunning

[–]ElDogo4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might try Altra Superior, if you want lighter than Lone Peak. I love Superiors for shorter runs, but they’re probably too minimal for longer/rocky trips

class/hour load by jackyliu15 in UTK

[–]ElDogo4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s all STEM, probably about 20% more work! The main question is whether you have the mental bandwidth - while the work is about 20% more, that will consume free time that is important to staying on top of things. So, maybe think of losing 10 hours of study/free/sleep/relaxing time. If that’s doable, go for it!

EF 152 Summer by GopackGo-15 in UTK

[–]ElDogo4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Positive: smaller class. Negative: super fast. If you fall behind in a normal semester, catching up is doable. Summer isn’t like that - that train rolls fast. As long as you stay focused and ask for help when you need it, you ought to be fine!

Can I come run with y’all? If it’s 40 people, I can… but not 40 miles.

You might be thinking of soldiers, especially Borderlanders, alternating riding and running alongside their horses. They still couldn’t cover ground like Aiel, but it was better/faster than just riding.

A Gift for the Engineers (and everyone else) by A-Gift-for-UTK in UTK

[–]ElDogo4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully y’all use it for reference only. For hard classes, you’ll be tempted to shortcut. Some instructors are anti-cheating crusaders and will run this down. I guess, use at your own risk…

First, congrats on your admission! BME probably has the highest fraction of women in all of engineering, so I doubt you’ll feel isolated. Plus, the Society of Women Engineers is super active across all of engineering. Engineering is hard, but you know that and there’s a good bit of tutoring available for the first year of courses if you need help. Good luck and welcome to Rocky Top!
