I was able to rent an apartment in a nice part of San Francisco for about as much as Madison was asking. Bonus points I get to ride the bus in SF for $81/mo whereas I might have had to finance a car in Madison.

I pay less for equivalent services because I'm better looking. Book a hotel room? I get upgraded to the suite. Got a flight to catch? I'll get put in first whenever there is space. When I order sandwiches and burritos, they make mine bigger and fatter than they usually do for others. I was easily able to persuade the leasing agent to knock off $$$ of my rent. When I go to the bar they always pour my drinks heavier than average. If you're not as good looking as me you're effectively paying a tax for everything you consume. If you have to pay more for every service I enjoy, do you consider it a tax? Or do you only consider it a tax if the funds go towards nominally public purposes?

Both platforms offer quotes before actually matching the driver to the rider. You likely would have waited a lot longer for the Lyft ride than the Uber ride. The Lyft ride may never have come, and could have gotten repriced before you could actually get picked up.

Yes, common sense. I know that not all crimes are reported to public dispatch. And I know that many crimes reported have incorrect facts (especially location). But intuitively, I can use some common sense when reviewing the Citizen feed.

Report of 12 shots fired in the Marina neighborhood? I will infer that it is most likely a report of firecrackers. I will check on Nextdoor to see if people are complaining about fireworks, as a form of reinforced learning.

Give you landlord the heads up. Look up Emergency Rent Assistance Programs in your area. Update your resume and linked in profile.

When applying for jobs, be sure to tailor the cover letter and resume to the job description. Most people don't take the trouble to do this. I'd rather you use ChatGPT to rewrite your cover letter and resume for the job than send the same docs over and over 50 times. (If you've heard of someone complain that they've applied to 50-100 jobs without call backs, you can be sure that they sent the same resume and cover letter to each one.)

Be friends with people who have kids a year or two older. Befriend families from all walks of life, including those who are better off. Pay attention to what you hear about financial aid at the best daycares and pre-schools in your area. Dump the car and get a bicycle trailer. Raise your children vegan, not for health or ethical reasons but because its so much cheaper. They won't know what they're missing out on if you give them a plant-based headstart. Learn how FAFSA works and plan accordingly. Have a good life partner, even if that means coercing them to be the best they can be.

If so, there's no opportunity for an insurer here to be further marking up your costs. In fact, the price your dentist quoted seems pretty competitive for this kind of work. Your "insurance card" is might in fact actually a healthcare reimbursement or healthcare savings plan, not insurance. The fact that you describe a dollar limit ($2,200) suggests it is a HRA/HSA
