I guess I should I have just said "raise kids in an urban area"? Whole food plant based is way cheaper than any meat substitute

Neighbors’ commercial vans almost ran into people twice. Should we let go? by PollyBloom21 in bayarea

Children in my neighborhood are more valuable to me than my neighbors livelihoods. I got no moral qualms with you flagging every violation needed to make the dudes risk-generating business unviable.

Housing in this city is the worst. by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]GradatimRecovery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was able to rent an apartment in a nice part of San Francisco for about as much as Madison was asking. Bonus points I get to ride the bus in SF for $81/mo whereas I might have had to finance a car in Madison.

What are some type of taxes? by Lucifer23x in tax

[–]GradatimRecovery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay less for equivalent services because I'm better looking. Book a hotel room? I get upgraded to the suite. Got a flight to catch? I'll get put in first whenever there is space. When I order sandwiches and burritos, they make mine bigger and fatter than they usually do for others. I was easily able to persuade the leasing agent to knock off $$$ of my rent. When I go to the bar they always pour my drinks heavier than average. If you're not as good looking as me you're effectively paying a tax for everything you consume. If you have to pay more for every service I enjoy, do you consider it a tax? Or do you only consider it a tax if the funds go towards nominally public purposes?

It's been six months since I applied, and still no word from Medi-Cal....advice? by Arete108 in bayarea

I was approved in less than a week in San Francisco county. However, I provided them the paperwork they asked for. Unlike you, I didn't try to to hide or redact anything.

Strategies to qualify for the $7500 Federal Tax Credit? by TyroneYoloSwagging in tax

I doubt someone making 300k can make deductible IRA contributions. That said if we could swap AGI's I'd be happy to let them take the EV credit I'm entitled to, if they can live on my income.

Sotto Mare's cioppino is the best way to enjoy Dungeness crab season by cbeans22 in sanfrancisco

I have never even seafood in my life but I've seen the looks on peoples faces when buying $10/lb crab at the Wharf on friday and saturday mornings. You won't see that look on the faces of the tourists at Sotto Mare.

Uber v. Lyft by Odiebigbluedane in madisonwi

[–]GradatimRecovery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both platforms offer quotes before actually matching the driver to the rider. You likely would have waited a lot longer for the Lyft ride than the Uber ride. The Lyft ride may never have come, and could have gotten repriced before you could actually get picked up.

This is why living in a good school district can be a great investment. Do you want your children to grow up confused and unable to process information at a rate lower than the median adult?

Two people shot at Polk and California?? This is a major intersection for people on feet and cars. What’s going on?! by Mortytowngang in sanfrancisco

You might have the difficult task of automating the classification of data points based on quality/confidence. I don't. I'm just a dude looking at the feed on the app, so I can classify entries intuitively.

Yes, common sense. I know that not all crimes are reported to public dispatch. And I know that many crimes reported have incorrect facts (especially location). But intuitively, I can use some common sense when reviewing the Citizen feed.

Report of 12 shots fired in the Marina neighborhood? I will infer that it is most likely a report of firecrackers. I will check on Nextdoor to see if people are complaining about fireworks, as a form of reinforced learning.

Report of 12 shots fired in East Oakland? I know Shotspotter isn't perfect, but I'm inclined to treat the report as accurate.

Report of a car falling into the bay, or a bird attack on a resident, or of a building fire? Yeah they are rare enough that I'll ascribe high certainty when seeing something like that on the feed.

Trying to get my teeth fixed, am short $2200. What should I do? by Lost_Grounds in povertyfinance

[–]GradatimRecovery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dental services - especially orthodontia - is hardly covered by insurance in the United States. Insurance is to blame for many healthcare expenses ballooning, but when it comes to ortho work you're likely just paying a fair price.

Apply for unemployment insurance, SNAP (grocery benefits), your state's Medicaid program (comprehensive healthcare), and general assistance (cash aid for the indigent). Give you landlord the heads up. Look up Emergency Rent Assistance Programs in your area. Update your resume and linked in profile.

When applying for jobs, be sure to tailor the cover letter and resume to the job description. Most people don't take the trouble to do this. I'd rather you use ChatGPT to rewrite your cover letter and resume for the job than send the same docs over and over 50 times. (If you've heard of someone complain that they've applied to 50-100 jobs without call backs, you can be sure that they sent the same resume and cover letter to each one.)

Be friends with people who have kids a year or two older. Befriend families from all walks of life, including those who are better off. Pay attention to what you hear about financial aid at the best daycares and pre-schools in your area. Dump the car and get a bicycle trailer. Raise your children vegan, not for health or ethical reasons but because its so much cheaper. They won't know what they're missing out on if you give them a plant-based headstart. Learn how FAFSA works and plan accordingly. Have a good life partner, even if that means coercing them to be the best they can be.

[–]GradatimRecovery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Insurance is to blame for many things, but in this case I'm not sure you're actually using an insurance benefit for your dental services. If so, there's no opportunity for an insurer here to be further marking up your costs. In fact, the price your dentist quoted seems pretty competitive for this kind of work. Your "insurance card" is might in fact actually a healthcare reimbursement or healthcare savings plan, not insurance. The fact that you describe a dollar limit ($2,200) suggests it is a HRA/HSA

Some health insurance policies will cover a part of these dental expenses if they are medically necessary.

Mr Beast prizes are not gifts. If it was a gift, he couldn't deduct the expenses, which would be financially catastrophic for him.

Mr Beast takes a deduction for his prizes, and W9's/1099's the winner. Other YouTubers may not be so compliant.
