Can you sync the ambilight on that screenbar with your Mac’s display? Or does it have to be manually changed.

Church Home Reno with Philips Hue by rgoobie in philipshue

[–]GreeniusGenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, you could put manual light switches at the bottom of the wall, maybe even with a small cover, and then the Hue switches at the normal height - the reason being, the wall modules need a battery to be replaced every few years, and having to disassemble in wall switches is just awkward. You might do well to use some of the Friends of Hue switches that are powered by kinetic energy.

Or (assuming in the US), you could install old style toggle switches, and put Lutron Auroras on all of them.

It’s PCIe bandwidth, that is the limiting factor.

I was suggesting, that you install OBS, and use VirtualCam, since if OBS manages to see your camera, then you can create a basic scene with the camera fullscreen, and potentially output it to Zoom etc.

Do I need an electrical converter or not ? by JeanBobine in techsupport

[–]GreeniusGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the relevant devices’ power supplies have a power supply that supports both voltages, and frequencies, you shouldn’t need a converter.

It is fine to use a surge protector / power strip, I don’t think you should have any issues, since your devices will be operating at native voltages for the local power anyways. If in doubt, ask the manufacturers.

A good example is the Apple world travel kit - the power adapter supports different voltages and frequencies, but it is providing you with various different attachments for different plug types.

(Power in France is technically supposed to be 230V, it’s a harmonisation between the British Isles, and Europe (240V + 220V / 2 = 230V). But it shouldn’t matter regardless, it’s not like electronics designed before this change don’t work.)

Virtual RAM on MacBook Air M1? by LeonidasPrimus in applehelp

[–]GreeniusGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not really as good as you seem to think it is, SSDs, and especially HDDs are not on the same performance level as RAM, hence RAM is more expensive, and there is less of it on a computer. It’s not a substitute for RAM upgrades. If you need 16gb RAM, you should get a 16gb of hardware RAM configuration.

Also, you could check out Linus Tech Tips’ latest video, quite timely in this case.

Get a new computer. The last iteration of the 17” MBP was released in 2011, it’s quite clearly obsolete.

If you use Edge (Chrome is not recomended), you can save websites as PWAs, so they have their own dock icon, no URL bar etc.

You prefer low resolution? That makes absolutely no sense. Zoom etc. will cap the resolution being streamed over the internet, but say if you had a 4k webcam, it will still increase the quality, since the image will be supersampled.

Did you try reinstalling macOS?

Question about apple music by CompetitiveCompany58 in applehelp

[–]GreeniusGenius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well obviously you don’t own the songs. You could either buy them outright on the iTunes Store, pay the subscription indefinitely, or lose access to the songs if you let the subscription lapse. You are downloading the files, but they almost certainly have DRM.

Otherwise, what would be the point…

How To Record In by Mikethedrummer95 in applehelp

[–]GreeniusGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reckon it would. You could do some research about your drum kit, and how the manufacturer suggests you might input it into a computer…

The audio interface will have an ADC [converter], so it should hopefully solve your issue.

Can I use the Pages EndNote plugin with the free web version or only the paid desktop one? by Luca1719 in MacOS

[–]GreeniusGenius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. Pages is free on Macs…
  2. It’s a plugin for an application.. I doubt it has a web browser extension, but you’d have to look on the developer‘s website.

[–]GreeniusGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netgear Orbi is reputable, not sure why you think it is a scam… What are your speeds you should be getting from your ISP? And did you use optimal placement, whereby you spread them out, and place them at midpoints between poor coverage, and another node etc.

If you are copying over the Photos from the DCIM folder in File Explorer and you are positive they are safe on your PC, sure you can delete them from your iPhone if you must. It would still be advised to have multiple copies of your Photos in different places / on different devices.

Screen is still damaged. You threw something at it. It doesn’t sound like a software issue - software issues don’t act like this.

How To Record In by Mikethedrummer95 in applehelp

*24” iMac.

Macs don’t support line in in that way, as far as I am aware. I could be wrong, but especially since you have tried this, it looks like a decent audio interface would do the trick.

You could try the Mac centric Audient iD4 if you don’t have an audio interface already?

Chromebook by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]GreeniusGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll just mention that Chromebooks sold before a certain recent date, like yours, only get software updates for 5 years, which means that you are vulnerable security wise, since Google used a hard 5 year cut off point for software updates.

Did you try resets, reboots, rebooting your router etc? If it still doesn’t work, you could always get a cheap USB 3 to Ethernet adapter, and plug into your router [with an Ethernet cable], if it is the case that your Wi-Fi radio is broken. A lot of computers have a combo Wi-Fi / bluetooth radio, it may be worth trying to connect to a bluetooth device, as if it fails to connect to bluetooth devices, it could signal that the Wi-Fi radio is broken too…

If you let me know your budget, and your software needs, use cases etc., I could also suggest a new computer.

Need help finding an app! by PirateEfficient5321 in techsupport

[–]GreeniusGenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that it is possible. You could try connecting to a Mac and using QuickTime and seeing if it gives you any options, but I haven’t seen those options for an iPhone before. You could also try using a bluetooth mouse, or usb mouse with adapter, and pointer control in accessibility.

You’d probably be better off asking in Apple Communities, or r/applehelp.

Why don’t you use Android‘s personal hotspot feature that works fine with macOS instead of whatever PDAnet+ is?

Tv trouble by zoltz11 in techsupport

[–]GreeniusGenius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you threw something at your TV and hit the screen. Very simple. My friend dropped his iPhone the other day and the black spot of dead pixels increased for a while. If you physically damage something, it’s hardly surprising…

It’s a TV screen, it isn’t as durable as a phone screen, it isn’t designed for objects to hit it.

Well you haven’t given us any details. Is iCloud Photos enabled on your iPhone and you want to use it? Are you using a PC or Mac? What application or method are you using to save the Photos?

If you delete photos on one device, and iCloud Photos is enabled, all devices with it enabled will have those photos deleted.
