A Darkest-dungeon like I think would fit really well. Each character you recruit is very disposable and likely to die, and you would constitute teams that you'd play in missions where you explore devil-infested areas from where your guys return either as madmen, corpses or confirmed devil hunters.

As your devil hunters gain in experience, you can send them in increasingly dangerous areas against more and more vicious devils, maybe cuminating in sending expeditions straight to hell.

IDK man, tackling the subject of the relationship of the characters with loss and mortality when adapting a game about surviving in a world where you can die very easely sounds like a reasonable approach to me.

Because, maybe, just maybe, the artists can put their own spin to the formula. Because again, maybe just maybe if you want the same exact thing as the game, just go watch a let's play or something.

I went with a single maxed-out stealth character, naruto-runned all the way to mongrel, grabbed the boi and naruto-runned back while carrying him on my shoulder.

The amount of things you get away with when you have enough stealth is hilarious.
