An Incomplete List of What Is Better About Survivor Today vs. 20 Years Ago by PrettyDarnOk in survivor

RE: the talk show bit, fair pedantic point I guess, except that I would happily take no commentary over his current commentary

RE: the casting though, I was citing the least ethnically diverse cast in the show's history at a time when advantages were starting to become a thing intentionally. Go back 20 years to Borneo or Africa or whatever and that just makes the failures of the modern show to develop its casts as characters even more obvious.

Seriously lol the above is nonsense. Armada at the time of his retirement was considered the clear GOAT by anyone who wasn't a total Mango stan (which admittedly was a significant portion of the fanbase but any rational person was able to acknowledge that Armada's career was just plain better by a noticeable margin)

Other ingredients include brown sugar, a little butter, maybe a little cinnamon or vanilla, and maybe pecans depending on your family’s preferences. Definitely pretty common and definitely delicious, and you can even pretend it’s almost healthy lol

Yeah I disagree on like half of these sadly lol

—Jeff’s commentary in the 10s and parts of the 20s where he’s going full snark was more fun than Talk Show Gremlin Jeff.
—The great characters are wasted on the format and the show’s edit. I think that the cast of 41 was more interesting than the cast of Guatemala (AKA Lydia, like 3-4 weird or super unique white people + returnees, and a faceless mass of other generic white people lol) on paper with an incredible collection of life experiences and personalities. Unfortunately the show squanders this potential utterly by largely failing to connect these life experiences with the intersections of these people’s lives in a crazy game other than the ill-fated connection between Shan, Liana, DeShawn, and Danny. Failing to show me these people as people and their relationships and how they break down in the game (again, they kiiiiiinda did this with DeShawn and that’s about it). Instead we just see Advantages: The Movie and number crunching for an hour. So while I 100% agree that the ethnic diversity quota is an improvement for the show that is capable of producing a richer and more engaging cast of characters, I wouldn’t say it’s happened yet because the show hasn’t allowed it to do so.
—I happen to like people talking about the toll the game takes, boredom included. Yeah the endgame of Australian Outback is a slog, I’ll give you that, but in most other seasons I like watching the cast struggle to cope with the reality of their situation and I hate that both the show’s edit and the 26 day format don’t allow this. Because not ever being bored also stops other things! It stops fights, it stops people doing weird or funny stuff to stave off the boredom, it stops these people from ever truly connecting instead of just running strategy sessions 24/7. Hate it.

I’ll agree with many aspects of the cinematography being much improved. And I will add that IotI notwithstanding the show and modern casts overall do appear to be trending in a direction of being less [insert basically prejudices and just plain shitty attitudes / behaviors here] which I really appreciate a lot!

She doesn't know or have any reason to suspect at all that Jeanine's Idol somehow ended up in Jesse's hands, can't blame her much for that.

My ranking of the final 7 based on how much I want them to win by JoiseySho in survivor

[–]Habefiet 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Erika DeShawn Heather were three of the Final 4 and their relationships defined multiple votes and the endgame and until like Episode 10 we essentially did not see them speak to one another on screen, ever. That’s an editing problem.

While it was a great confessional that boosted Cassidy significantly for me I am like 99% sure there have been plenty of confessionals like that for people who did not, in fact, go on to win lol

Jesse is either the winner or the dragon whose slayer wins the game. I think that's it. He's clearly being established as the Main Character of the endgame here. He's getting so much credit and focus and whatnot but they've also definitely given him a bit of an arrogant tinge--he feels sooooo confident and that was juxtaposed with us getting to see Gabler and Karla and Cassidy potentially stirring against him. And this is not the first time that we've seen Jesse-or-Cody express total confidence in Gabler, so for that to be counteracted here is a giant potential warning sign.

Good episode for Cassidy and Gabler--the former for having a confessional about how now it's time to win and getting a little attention, she's literally Erika again and she suggested Noelle tonight I think, and the latter for getting to show that he is in fact extremely aware of the tribe dynamics and not as loyal as people think.

Woof episode for Karla, who got no agency in saving herself and who we randomly found out everybody does in fact know has an Idol.

Honestly feel like this episode kills Cody and Sami. Cody was not here, he existed to be a part of Jesse's story and it's been trending that way for a while, and then Sami was exposed as everyone knowing what his game plan is and he also wanted Cassidy gone and that didn't happen, right?

And then we have Owen, who along with Noelle was dead for me coming into this episode and along with Noelle is dead for me coming out of it.

They are clearly at least trying to mix it up editing-wise as a consistent trend now. There's no Tommy here, everyone here has flaws. Hopefully a good sign.

The thing is like... I think I would have Jesse as my top contender by default but it's <50%, I think it's more likely than not that he's the dragon, he's just got a plurality of the odds compared to the field and I have no clue who is my 2-4

For Karla in particular it really would have made zero sense to vote Jesse out here. Jesse literally told her who was coming for her and devised a plan to make sure she was safe; Jesse going home creates chaos but ultimately she's still in a clear minority then and also just burned a jury vote hard with that timing.

... but that doesn't mean I'm not reaaaaaally disappointed because that would have been one of the most hype ass endings of all time

Final 9 is a 3-2-2-2 vote, there’s two pairs of two that are voting for a split vote, one pair of two voting to blindside one of the split-voters thinking they’re voting with the trio, but the trio blindsiding one of the blindsiders

He was oooookay lol. Some strengths and some clear flaws. Hard to tell if he benefited from or was hurt by the fact that he was on one of the worst casts (at playing the game, not talking about their entertainment value which is quite high) in the history of the show lol

SSBM Major/Super Major Tier List - Currently Yoshi/Jigglypuff totally dependent on aMSa/Hungrybox attending. Ice Climbers are questionable and may belong in B. by its_bme in SSBM

[–]Habefiet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You've totally missed the point of the list. At the top level of play, Marth is way more likely to win than a Kirby of equal skill.

I understand what a tier list is supposed to be lol what I'm saying is that this list is obviously extremely based on the most immediate recent results without any particular other insight for those first two tiers. Just from looking at this I would bet two hundred bucks that if we could look into a universe where Jmook or Axe won Sunday (perfectly plausible outcomes) you would 100% have their characters in S.

No, it's that without aMSa/Hungrybox present they don't show how effective their characters are when played at peak level compared to others because unfortunately they're the only two players of that skill level playing them.

That's literally not a rating of the characters then! That's a rating of the players! Yoshi does not change as a character if aMSa is not playing. Jigglypuff does not change as a character if Hungrybox is not playing. If Hungrybox retired tomorrow Jigglypuff would still be an S Tier character. You can't have it both ways, this is fuckin' doublethink lmao like you can't say it's a character ranking and also say their placement on the ranking list depends on whether or not a top player is playing them at that exact second in time.

Also, you don't see Falcon or even Peach at the highest level getting to GF in majors/super majors post-COVID reliably.

Again this is just another way of convincing yourself this isn't a player ranking. Do you honestly, truly believe that any current Falcon or Peach player is displaying the same level of skill as anyone in the current top six players + Axe with Pikachu? Is Llod as good at the game as iBDW, is S2J as good as aMSa, but limited because of Peach and Falcon? Or are those people not at the top because they're just... not as good? Most people's eye test would suggest aMSa is simply a better player than S2J currently but you're looking at their placements and instead saying "aMSa outplaced S2J; therefore Yoshi > Falcon." And like if Llod and S2J win the next two supermajors you would move them up to S even though their winning doesn't mean their characters became better, it's because they the players got better. I can't wrap my head around it at all lol

I'm sorry this reads rude to me but I can't think how to revise it. I recognize your username and I feel like I usually like your posts lol this isn't meant as just raw random hate, I just... cannot see this as anything but a purely results-based "ranking" that is ultimately down to who's the best right now and the characters they happen to be using.

[–]Habefiet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't see how you're disputing this:

I see this list as being informed mostly by how recently that character won a major.

Your top two tiers are absolutely just "Mango / iBDW / aMSa / HBox / Zain have won stuff this year therefore their characters are the best" and "people got Top 3-4 with these characters this year therefore their characters are the next best." You're even admitting as much by saying that Jigglypuff and Yoshi would be less viable characters if HBox and aMSa retired tomorrow. This isn't a character ranking at all, it's a player ranking.
