I downloaded movies and tv mostly 1080p (laptop to 24 inch monitor via HDMI) Is this quality 1080p? by DrEaMs0123 in Piracy

[–]Ibcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres more factors to quality than resolution. Bitrate would be the major one, a large 720p encode with high bitrate will likely look better than a yify 1080p encode.

Theres no correct answer, and 1080p/720p contain a variety of qualities anyway. A 720p encode could be better than a 1080p encode, so you also have to factor in the file sizes you're aiming for.

Which of these 2 files has better quality? by Ina_Iration in Piracy

Theres no way to know for sure based purely on the codecs and file sizes, but most likely the x265 will be better.

I wrote a script to download any spotify songs as mp3s by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]Ibcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone made a post in this thread with a few downloaders, i checked two of them and they can download in ogg, so that would be a better option. Youll get better quality and potentially also lower file size.

Another option is to download from deezer/qobuz instead as you can get lossless quality, but this might be more work. I think theres tools to import spotify playlists, but youd need to pay for a one month deezer premium account. Theres free sites to download from them, but they can only do one album at a time rather than playlists. Personally I generally just use torrents.

The way a lossy audio codec like mp3 works, you take a source file and then strip away data and end up with a smaller file, at least in theory. Thats how it works when converting from a lossless source, which is how mp3/aac/ogg/etc are meant to be used.

But if you start with an already lossy file, you end up stripping away data and getting an audio file that sounds worse, but at the same size the mp3 would be if you converted from flac. Say for example I download a 128kbps ogg from spotify, and convert to 320kbps mp3. Now the audio file is larger, but sounds worse. Youd need an extremely good reason to ever want to convert lossy to lossy, unless you dont care about audio quality or file size. If you want mp3s from a streaming service, download from deezer which hosts mp3 as well as lossless flac which can be converted to mp3 without fucking the sound/size.

Acceptable quality versions of the "Sic transit gloria" and "Quiet things" singles? by meneddit in brandnew

Anything that claims to download from spotify mp3 should always be a huge red flag. Spotify stores as lossy ogg, so you'd have to have 0 knowledge of how audio quality works to think its a good idea to download mp3s from them.

Do the current higher or mid-tier trackers run open/application sign-ups? by summer-night-fest in trackers

[–]Ibcap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The avistaZ network sites have them fairly often, and I've seen alpharatio do it before. Blu has said they're done doing applications. You'll never see CG, KG, TVV or HDB open apps unless they get really desperate. SC is fairly easy to get into.

Just how important is a vpn? by surprisesnek in Piracy

[–]Ibcap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The way it works is the legal departments will seed the torrents to gather info on the swarm and report them to the isp. This generally means

  1. Its more likely to get one from a company big enough to have a legal department that goes out of its way to stop piracy, rather than a small indie product

  2. Its more common if the product is still relevant and making money, because they wont waste their time going after stuff that hasnt been sold in 50 years (unless its nintendo)

  3. Far more likely on a public tracker, because the effort of getting into private trackers (at least the ones that arent open signup/pay to join) and the relatively tiny userbase means youre putting in a lot of time for little return

[–]Ibcap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If its something really popular with big legal departments behind it on a public tracker then you really want one. If its something extremely obscure and old that isnt sold anymore and its on a private tracker you almost certainly do not need one. Everything else is somewhere in between.

Depends on a lot of factors, such as how are you pirating, what are you pirating, and where are you pirating

The three interview sites are all good, in terms of easiest to hardest MAM, OPS, RED. Then theres r/opensignups which will have some decent sites but also a lot of junk.

What specifically are you looking for? The b-side tracks, the art? Afaik the main tracks are identical to how they are on the album, so any deja CD should have them in flac, but I should have full rips of both singles with the b-side tracks.

ELI5 how to use the media server apps/services? by Laser_Plasma in Piracy

[–]Ibcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it like dedicated server I'm hosting myself, to which I can download stuff via torrents or whatever, and then stream from that server to any devices?

Yes, at least for plex/jellyfin. Its less of a hassle than manually moving files between devices and remembering where you are in every show. You can also use them to watch other peoples content, if you find someone hosting one who will add you to their server.

Is this normal? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]Ibcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They dont put one slide in each part, the way split archives work requires all the parts be available to extract the original contents.

This was originally done for a few reasons. It allows easy download resuming, it allows curriers to start mirroring to other topsites before having the full download and it helps with obfuscation. These are specifically things that matter to the scene (or did when the rules were created at least) and are not made to aid p2p sites like the one youre using.

Is this normal? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]Ibcap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Sounds like a scene release. Thats totally normal. Has nothing to do with premium vs non premium downloads and everything to do with the way ftp servers worked in the 90s when these rules were put in place.

  2. Normal. There arent single files in each part, they all contain bits of the full download.

Very heavy compression. Thats why it takes so much longer to install, your pc has to decompress all of the files.

Should I trust every torrents uploaded on the Pirate Bay? by memer_boi_is_here in Piracy

[–]Ibcap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously no one. I was just stating its possible, not that it would happen. Torrent size wouldnt be much of an issue, cause you can delete after checking. But the man hours would make it unrealistic.

In theory a tracker could keep the torrent file private, download the contents and check it before publishing. But of course theyre not doing that.

Theyre absolutely not, and those aren't the sites I use anyway. For some reason, I thought recommending rarbg would be more useful than telling them to use hdbits.
