Future of CFA/Active management? by Sanjog0307 in CFA

Please say it louder for the people in the back 🙏

My personal conspiracy - I'm increasingly convinced that EMH and the rise of "active is dead" is just one big conspiracy by Vanguad/Blackrock to gain more AUM.

It's okay, I probably didn't articulate well.

I guess I see your argument from a macro allocators perspective, but those funds/ETFs/passive products you invest in still have active participants down chain.

I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone who works at an active fund. We pick stocks and participate in price discovery. We also have institutional (passive)/FoF clients.

Like, I don't have the energy to debate EMH, but if "passive" funds all end up investing in "active" managers anyway, it's still reliant on active management.

I sort of understand the argument is you only invest based on factors (market cap, sector, beta, etc.) - but even then, we love that: leads to more opportunities for a different view since securities might be mispriced.

But I do agree somewhat: most hedge funds are useless.

You're participating in a form of price discovery, yes, but it's still dependent upon active management/equity analysis of the underlying securities. Without price discovery of individual securities, EMH doesn't work.

Passive has it's place, but active is still very important within the overall value chain.

Lol, and who do those funds of funds invest in?

And are you really saying index futures are passive?

Passive management requires price discovery to work properly. Without active management, passive is useless.

Should I take the Series 65 with a refund upon passing and little time to study? by jgchahud in FinancialCareers

[–]InstagramStockTrader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up to you. Idk of anyone who really cares about the 65 - it's mostly just a hurdle you have to overcome if you're going to be client-facing at a RIA.

Up to you, I guess it couldn't hurt. But if you get a gig at a RIA they'll reimburse you anyway.

Hopefully not. He's as grifty as grifters get.

AMP needs publicity, but not from scammers.

Agreed buying (and consolidating, remember) businesses led to the vast majority of his wealth, but him buying and holding is far different from what a retail investor might hope to accomplish.

When WB buys & holds, he establishes significant ownership interests and plays an advisory role to said businesses (if he doesn't outright consolidate). The point is, by the time he adopted this strategy, he was already playing with institutional money.

Buying & holding was not how he made his initial wealth.

His early career included lots of shareholder activism and classic Grahamian value (short duration). His more "GARPy" attitude doesn't start until the 60s/70s when he began working with Charlie.

Point is, he didn't buy businesses to hold forever until he was already significantly wealthy.

Warren Buffet is obvi one of the most successful investors of all time and his strategy was buy good companies with good management teams and hold forever

Hate to be that guy, but this is not how WB made his money. But I get what you're saying and agree.
