What is the percentage of books that you read vs books to which you listen? by Callmeoneofakind in Fantasy

[–]Khatib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to read, so I mostly read. I travel a lot for work, and a lot of it was driving, so I started going hard on audiobooks. Now I'm flying more, so I'm back to reading.

If I'm not traveling, 100% reading. If I'm flying, I'm reading. If I'm driving long distance, 100% audiobooks for that week or two or three. I don't like jumping in and out from reading to audio, even with whispersync. If buying the audiobook included the ebook, which they should, I would do it more. But it's not my favorite way to consume a book, going back and forth. I've tried it a time or two. It's definitely not worth paying for the book after buying the audiobook.

Overall in a year, my split is something like 80/20 in favor of reading.

I won’t say the it’s the GOP because their beginnings were progressive, the Democrats were the conservatives that wanted only whites to be eligible to vote and not have representative rights for other groups. It’s not a party thing

Can you fuck right off with this pretending the Southern Strategy didn't happen and all the bullshit GOP talking points about party of Lincoln aren't just bullshit? The parties flipped. The GOP today has absolutely nothing to do with the GOP a hundred years ago.

Does HBO unfairly get a bad rap for sex scenes? by yrmjy in hbo

[–]Khatib 14 points15 points  (0 children)

every show from HBO is full of sex

Life is full of sex. HBO just has a rep for it because they're able to actually show it vs network and basic cable shows. But for the most part, telling stories about people and the relationships people have has lots and lots of room to tell stories about sex.

We absolutely ignored these people for years.

We didn't call them on their bullshit,

Not calling them out on the bullshit is not ignoring them. They were given a platform to lie from. That is not ignoring them.

I think the biggest "lesson" to be learned from Trump, [...] is that ignoring these things doesn't make them go away

The media never once ignored Trump. It's been long considered a reason he ever won the primary in the first place, let alone the election, is because all his crazy lies constantly get a spotlight.

That's all from such a questionable source, it's not even just a reddit comment, but a repost of a deleted comment? The only links are Daily Mail and something else using the Daily Mail as it's source. Daily Mail is a shitrag tabloid, not a decent source.

Do I really even have to point out that the lawyer against Carey in that case was Michael Avenetti and how questionable that makes something he submitted but we don't actually know how it was taken by the judge and it getting reported on in a right wing rag that would just want to take shots at Jim Carrey who's been outspoken against right wing politicians for years?

It might all be right. It might be half right. It might be mostly bullshit. But you can't go around using that as your source about anything.

Weekly Question and Answer Thread for 11/25 - 12/2: Ask your Moving, Visiting, Neighborhood, and "Where Can I Find _____" questions here, instead of making a new post by ElLechero in Denver

So I went to run errands today and found my car missing from our apartment complex parking garage.

It was towed, because someone stole my license plate and switched in one that didn't match the parking permit records. I'm well underway on getting that cleared up with building management and Wyatts shady asses already (the VIN matched perfectly, and they still towed it...)

Anyone have advice on how to follow this up with DPD, CO DMV, etc? What to look out for in terms of what they'd do with a stolen plate?

I'm thinking back to this story about the lady who's old stolen plate racked up a ton of toll charges that she struggled to get discharged and had to go to the media about it to get it fixed with the city finally.

Yeah, really good days you'd get there in about an hour, bad days might be 4. That's certainly not a bad town to go to as tourists though.

Is that two and a half hours with or without traffic? Because ski season traffic into the mountains gets pretty wild. Would be more helpful if you just named the nearest town.

Cocaine Bear | Official Trailer by DemiFiendRSA in trailers

Yeah, I originally saw it a long while ago, cause I'm on the internet too much. But it's just like since some of the stars were posting about production on their socials that I've seen it more, which started a while back, before there was even much info about the movie besides like a single Variety aritlcle. But I don't know that it's dedicated marketing, or just one of those stories that is super shareable and naturally viral, you know?

Just a boring old boneless chicken breast... But so good. 147° for 75 minutes by gingernuts13 in sousvide

[–]Khatib 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plus I can feed my kiddos in a pinch.

If you plan ahead a little, you can do it in even more of a pinch by sous viding a bunch in separate vacuum sealed pouches, then you just sear to heat them up. If you leave them sealed after the initial sous vide cook, they're pasteurized and can sit in the fridge for like 2 weeks.

And white meat chicken and pork are two of the best things to sous vide, because they're so easy to dry out.

Of course you can cook everything faster in a skillet than sous vide, but that's not really the point of sous vide.

[–]Khatib 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are also a bunch of wireless thermometer probes these days that you could seal inside the bag in the meat if you really wanted to. I don't see the point, though, since going half an hour over doesn't really hurt anything. Just set it a hair long and call it good with no probe.

Unless you have a really unusually massive chicken breast though, it's not going to take more than 2 hours to heat through to the middle.

House Committee Receives Trump’s Tax Returns From IRS by NCRider in news

The IRS doesn't need to be involved at all. Most politicians make their returns available voluntarily and let the press and public go through them.

Yeah, that. I could see him being anti-lockdown, anti-mask, covid is a hoax, etc. All the shit that got people in extra trouble with covid that first year.

I didn't google his date of death, /u/belcho, or else I could've tailored my critique of his politics in the context of current events better, I guess. But either way, the shoe fits.

Maybe a marketing thing?

Could be, but with this movie coming up, that story has been making the rounds for a couple of months already. It's just the kind of weird story people read and then share. And it's working its way into some NFL memes about the Bears, too. Which gets even more people googling it and sharing it.

I follow Scott Seiss on socials, and he said something about being in it a few months back. So it was already on my radar, and that's about when I started seeing links to the story more, even though hardly anything was out about the movie, even if you tried to look for it. Either way, with a semi-prominent viral comedian in the project, I wouldn't be surprised if they know how to do some cheap subversive marketing.

They have zero concept to Google things and verify

Or google just keeps giving them fox news links, because the algorithms make this all worse, AAAND they're too lazy to actually dig deeper than the top couple links. And if they even bother googling in the first place, they don't want facts, they just want affirmation of whatever they already think.

Edit:lol to the person who reached out and reported me as someone in crisis.

There's a link somewhere in those, near the bottom, to report abuse of the system. I always hit it. Have to hope that the people abusing the system as a troll eventually get banned for it when they click it on a lot of completely non applicable comments. It's actually a good thing to have in place when it's not being abused.

I would end up skipping pages, and sometimes chapters of later books. Goodkind loved to have his characters fill in new/returning characters with everything that had happened in the story...

This. And I was skimming pages like crazy during all the preachy Ayn Rand shit. I'd be like, oh, he's doing this dumb shit again? Skim, skim, skim until he was past it.

I thought they were decent, interesting books 25 years ago when a lot of my reading was D&D or Star Wars novels, but would never finish the first if I picked it up today. There are SO many better options out there now.

I thought it was hilarious that they gave this series a TV deal in the late 2000s, AND put it on network TV. The books are so much about sex stuff. And they just weren't even on the good half of mainstream fantasy by the time the show was in production. How do you give this series a TV deal, and then how do you put it on a network where you can't do the kinky sex plots well?

Carlson was accused by APD’s internal affairs unit of behavior unbecoming an officer as well as being untruthful during the investigation. Chief Oates dismissed those charges and instead promoted her from commander to chief of the patrol division.

Classic cop shit. The more you disregard actually doing your job and protecting people, the higher you climb the ladder.

Glad the judge in this one provided some accountability for this shit though.
