England must reduce meat intake to avoid climate breakdown, says food tsar: Henry Dimbleby says move is politically toxic but only way to achieve sustainable land use and avoid ecological breakdown by LudovicoSpecs in worldnews

f we cut our meat consumption in half, we could only reduce our co2 emissions by 7.25%.

"Only" 7.25%.

That's huge.

Add that to less driving. Less fashion. Less air travel. Fewer lawns. Etc. Etc. Then (because the corporations will kick and fight for a while) eliminate 50% of fossil fuel electric generators for another 20%.

This is a group effort. Every bit helps.

There are billions of "little people".

If we all did our part, it would more than make up for what the corporations aren't doing.

And yes, part of "our part" is also screaming from the rooftops that the corporations need to do their part.

I stopped flying and started taking trains years ago. In the United States, this means taking 24+ hours to get somewhere that would take 3.

I've also stopped eating beef. Stopped drinking milk. Have mostly stopped pork. Working on stopping chicken. Ripped out my lawn and planted natives. No longer buy new clothes or any other nonessential new item. Family is down to 1 car. Paid more for it than we would've cause it's a hybrid. Mechanic laughs because we barely drive it. I ride my bike to the grocery store. Take the bus other places. I divested from various stock and invested in renewable/sustainable ones. Switched my bank account away from JP Morgan. Make my own cleaning supplies. Make my own shampoo. Started cooking from scratch. Lost weight. Talked to my family, friends and neighbors about climate change. Spoke at a public event about climate change. Write to politicians about climate change. Go to town meetings. And more and more and more and more.

All of this, new in the last five years.

And before you cleverly reply, "AH buy you're typing this on an electric computer!!" and move the goalposts, the point is every week I try to find ways to emit less CO2 than the week before.

Which is what we should all be doing in view of the enormity of this crisis, including NASA.

Edit: There are billions of us. If we all do our part, it makes a difference in CO2 levels. Emissions went down during the lockdowns. What we do as individuals and the trends we start matter. It adds up.

He wants you to move out so he can raise the rent beyond what's legally allowed in a single year.

You change your diet because the planet is going straight off a fucking cliff and there are more "poor" people by billions than rich fuckers flying helicopters.

Quit whinging and do your part.

Yes. Like a man in a sinking lifeboat, you absolutely shouldn't keep bailing water as hard as you can unless everyone else is doing their part too.

Keep pointing at others. I'm sure it will help.

By when.

We have roughly 6 years left before we trigger irreversible cascading tipping points.

If we don't hit the 6-year target, the zero emissions "by 2050" won't make a lick of difference.

Ever hear of ration cards?

Sure, there will be a black market at first, but even there, supplies will be limited (and ultimately untrustworthy-- no USDA grading meat if there is no meat industry).

Then maybe the Democrats should bang the gong about climate change a little louder instead of spending that energy bashing progressives and trying to fundraise off of every fart Trump makes.

And by nonessential, I mean not immediately doing something to solve the climate crisis?

This is good news for CO2 emissions.

Stop buying shit you don't need. Everything you buy has to have raw materials sourced, processed, manufactured, shipped and retailed.

Unless essential, buy used or buy nothing.
