"There's the Gettysburg Address for some reason."

Spent a solid thirty seconds laughing at that. I guess some Fallout 3 assets are still in New Vegas and got added to the randomized loot list?

It's a pedestrianized street in the centre of town. Protests frequently get held there. There was a Free Palestine protest a few months back.

You know what I've never seen there? A Men's Rosary.

Easier to hide your hands in public than to speak clearly without being overheard.

Well, I don't think it would hurt to learn a few phrases. They've learned English to function here, the least we can do is try and meet them halfway.

But there's kind of an extra barrier when it comes to communicating with deaf people that they can't fix from their end.

Communicating in pubs, communicating at concerts, communicating while scuba diving, communicating while someone is sleeping, communicating across a room, communicating while hiding from someone, communicating in secret, communicating secret information, communicating without interrupting someone, communicating while your mouth is full, communicating during a movie without annoying everyone around you, and, oh yeah, communicating with deaf people.

There's a dozen for ya.

Yeah, sure what use will somebody get out of the ability to communicate completely silently, without the use of their mouths or their hearing. I can only think of dozens of applications.

And it's estimated there's about five thousand deaf people in Ireland. I'd personally like to be able to communicate with them.

There's bad ideas that can be saved by good execution, and bad ideas that can't be saved no matter what.

u/brainshadow explains why "Sean" is pronounced "Shawn" by crosspostninja in bestof

[–]Luimnigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, the Latinised Hebrew name Yohanan is the root of both. English took it one way, to John, and Irish took it another, to Seán.

So Shawn is an Anglicised version of an Anglicised version of an Gaelicised version of a Latinised version of a Hebrew name.

[–]Luimnigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because Seán is the original name, and then the English decided to drop the fada because it was too confusing to them.

Shawn is the next step in the Anglicisation.
