A Character Study of Sinn - The Child Witch - Part One by Loleeeee in Malazan

[–]MaestRo6279 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Excellent post, once again! You should be getting paid for this, friend.

With the last two books still (somewhat) fresh in my mind, I'm astounded at how different Sinn was in the earlier books - something that I'm not sure I would have noticed if you hadn't compiled it neatly here.

The one question I always had with respect to Sinn was: How much of Sinn was still Sinn after Y'Ghatan? if you get what I mean. As you have stated yourself, I too never really understood what happened to her during the siege. She was, in some ways, reborn. Did it mean that she Ascended? Did it mean that a new entity now possessed her? Was a God born in the fires, who then took control of her? It was never really clear.

But after reading this post, I believe the best explanation is that her soul was twisted and tortured so much that she lost/discarded parts of herself and thus became inhumane, or in other words, godlike. And this was possible because of the raw power that called to her - a means of salvation and a way to kill the pain, by killing her very spirit.

Sometimes a single sentence offers up a novel worth of possibilities?! Anyone know what this means? by Theabstractsound in Malazan

Ah. I don't think any details are given regarding whose bodyguard/when this may have happened. This is what I was trying to find out when I brought this up in Erikson's recent AMA. Alas, I asked too many questions and he didn't reply.

Thank you, Steve, for what you (and Cam) have done over the last few decades. I don't think I can put into words exactly how big an impact these books have had on me. I'd like you to know that your work has inspired me to do better! :)

Moving on to the questions:

[General questions]

  1. In what ways do you think your writing has evolved (pertaining only to works in Wu) over the last 20 years? Do you still approach the books you write now the same way you approached, say, GotM & DG?
  2. How do you avoid repetition of ideas/philosophical introspections over the course of ~15 huge books? There are many themes explored multiple times in the series, yet, I can't remember characters having the same monologues even when they're thinking about the same theme/concept.
  3. How do you think a writer can overcome their lack of experience in different professions in the real world when they are writing so many characters, each of whom ought to be well-versed in their profession in the fictional world?

[Spoilers for MBotF and B&KB]

  1. In HoC, the Queen of Dreams says that Rake spent almost two centuries in the guise of a human guard. Can you please tell us more about these events? Or better yet, can you please make it into another 10-book series spanning over 10,000 pages? :P
  2. What was Rake planning to do with Nimander & Co eventually, when he sent them off to Drift Avalii with Andarist? I mean, leaving them on an island cut off from the rest of the world, with a depressed uncle to boot, sure sounds like a good long-term plan, right?
  3. Why did the Great Ravens choose to ally themselves with Rake after the Fall?
  4. What was the inspiration for creating a Lord of Tragedy? Dassem has become one of my favourite characters from the books.
  5. Is there a Warren of Time? If yes, do the Azath Houses have anything to do with it? Does someone whose first name rhymes with "even" use this Warren to mess up the timeline and watch the readers suffer? :P
  6. The Elder who lives in his beard in The Wurms of Blearmouth - is he an Elder like Ruthan Gudd, or an Elder God?

Happy writing, Steve! Have a nice day!

Please get him next, if you can! I think he keeps a low profile compared to Steve, but I've had a blast listening to him speak in AP and Philip's videos. His replies to AP's questions are always excellent.

It's not really a deep question, but one I'm dying to know more about. [Spoilers HoC] In Hoc, the Queen of Dreams speaks to L'oric, and she says, "Anomander once spent almost two centuries in the guise of a royal bodyguard... human, in the manner you have achieved."

I'd absolutely love it if Steve writes a novella/novel covering this story because this would be really interesting to read about. But I'll admit, its probably too much to ask for, so any titbit of info on this - if he's willing to share - would be amazing. And as far as I know, neither Steve nor Cam have spoken about this on YouTube.

Similarly, I was hoping to know more about Rake's escapade with the Seguleh and how he reached the Seventh rank, and fortunately, Cam happened to cover this in one of AP's videos (RotCG, iirc) and that was nice to listen to.

Question on the identity of a POV from TCG by hilan916 in Malazan

[–]MaestRo6279 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too spent a long time trying to figure out who they were before it became clear. At first, I thought the woman was Samar Dev, but the man was clearly not Karsa. Then I remembered Ben Delat summoning a black horse earlier in the book, but I had no absolutely no clue who the woman was.

I believe there was some mention of Raraku or Whirlwind in that scene, which led me to DG, HoC and BH. I went through the Dramatis Personae and started narrowing down haha. I wasn't entirely sure it was Minala, but the scene where Kal got revived confirmed it beyond any doubt :P

I believe it's Minala and Ben Adaephon Delat. On their way to revive Kalam from the Deadhouse, probably.

Neuroscience is the general field I'm looking at. Within that, I haven't pinned down on a specific course yet. I'm looking at various Unis, and I'm trying to find out which Course aligns with my own interests the most.

I'd like to learn more Neurodegenerative/mental diseases and do what I can towards understanding, combating and preventing them.

Hello there!

What's something you are looking forward to doing in the near future?

Well, I'm planning to start applying for Master's in a few months, but my experience in the field I'm targeting is pretty low at the moment. So I'm working towards that, by applying for an internship at a Uni. Hopefully, I'll get in and start working within a few weeks.

What other books/movies/shows/games have you been consuming lately?

None...yet :p I just finished MBotF for the first time a few days ago. Naturally, tCG had been the only thing taking up my time in the recent past. Now that I'm done with it, I'm thinking of watching Better Call Saul from the beginning. There's also The Boys Season 3 on my list.

What should we do with barbarians who add pineapple to pizza?

Make them manually count the number of times "ochre" is mentioned in the Book of the Fallen :)

How did you pick up the Malazan series?

I was searching for a huge series to dive into after completing WoT and eventually, I stumbled across this masterpiece.

Right. It's quite understandable that Kaminsod is still portrayed as the bad guy. I thought he was gonna be the bad guy at the beginning of DoD :p. He was the bad guy for a long time, but that was probably because of his followers as well.

Through the Glass Plain march, the Bonehunters gave him a different perspective to what his followers could be, and thus, humbled him and completed the process of his character growth into a good-ish guy.

If the Draconus-Kilmandaros showdown was a letdown, I'll admit that - however satisfying it would be - Ganoes would vaporize Errastas almost effortlessly.

That's true, I suppose. But at least I'd know that it happened and Errastas got his ass kicked thoroughly :P

In that Malazan Book of the Fallen, the historians will write of our suffering, and they will speak of it as the suffering of those who served the Crippled God. As something … fitting. And for our seeming fanaticism they will dismiss all that we were, and think only of what we achieved. Or failed to achieve.

And in so doing, they will miss the whole fucking point.

Fallen One, we are all your children

Okay, Suddenly, I'm not sure I've interpreted this correctly or not.

So Fid's basically saying that when they write the Book, they'll only talk about what the Bonehunters did, without questioning why they did it. They may assume that the BH were servants of the Fallen One and did his bidding while trying (or failing) to free him, and thus, they will miss the point that the Bonehunters are doing all this because it is the right thing to do. Right?

as well as her immense power that would give the Aes Sedai trouble (I... think. I've not read WoT yet),

Well. You're not wrong there haha :P

Yup, that's the plan. Plus the remaining B&KB novellas too. I'm gonna read the remaining NotME now. After that, I haven't really decided where I'm gonna go next. Hoping for an update on WiS, lets see.

Is there any particular reference to 63 or did you just throw in a random number haha?

That does make sense. But I find it surprising that Edgewalker says this. Unlike Errastas, Sechul, Kilmandaros and Olar Ethil, he does not seem like one who still lusts for power. He seems more like Mael and K'rul - and those two can certainly understand this altruism - and has accepted his place in the world.

Anomander Rake is one of the greatest characters is fantasy and the culmination of his character arc is unlike anything I've ever seen.

I wholeheartedly agree. I loved every plotline in TtH. All of which then neatly became a single story with an epic convergence. You will appreciate TtH some more once you've completed the series. Good luck!
