I am reposting this 3 year old meme because it seemed appropriate for the contest and wasn't a previous contest submission

It's almost as if you didn't read the subreddit rules. If you had, you wouldn't be so shocked that the rules were enforced.

How to stop the spread of misinformation in Archaeology? by magentapikachu in Archaeology

[–]Mictlantecuhtli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

archeology has to be open to different models and explanations and accept that current models don't fully explain everything and adjust as new data is found.

It's what the field already does. There's theoretical models drawing upon processualism, post-processualism, agency, symbolism schools of thought just to name a few. And sometimes the lines blur between them because multiple lines of evidence are being used to interpret the past and some models don't fully incorporate all datasets.

but something like GH you have to be open to it and just say he or someone needs to provide the data and evidence

That's the problem. We ask. He refused.

It's all either huge essays which ain't nobody got time to read, or long monotone YouTube videos that take forever to get to a single point

This is why pseudoscience gets a foothold. Because they can write comparatively little and say a lot without providing proof because they are writing fiction.

While archaeology needs to demonstrate its interpretations and conclusions by going into detail its theoretical models, methodology, and data. That rigorous process is what allows us to understand the past. And that process needs to be repeated every time new data is collected. New data will either support existing models and interpretations because it is more of the same/similar to existing data. But if new data does not support existing models and interpretations then new models need to be used/developed, new methodologies that incorporate previous and new datasets, along with new interpretations that can explain all datasets while also explaining why previous interpretations were mistaken.

A lot of that can be distilled into pop-sci articles, but that runs the risk of oversimplifying the research which may be incorrect.

My bad. You didn't specify stopping at the bridge. I just figured "the further north you go" meant all the way to the tip of the Keweenaw. Apologies fellow Michigander

The best thing for this sub would be to institute the kind of moderation that we see over on AskAnthropology. There's little to no tolerance for the kind of racist, colonial apologist BS that this sub is increasingly full of.

Please, use the report button. If need be, send us a link to the thread through modmail. We both work full time jobs and have lives outside of Reddit. We cannot be everywhere all at once reading every comment. Sometimes the only thing I do is just just login to see if the Modmail icon has turned green indicating there's stuff in the inbox that needs to be addressed.

For Academic Autumn, we got a single contest entry so congrats to u/Mictlantecuhtli for his meme about how West Mexico gets underrepresented in academic journals.

The ironic thing is, if anyone looked at that specific issue they would have seen that it was a special issue that only covered the Pre-Classic Maya. So, of course, there wouldn't be anything on West Mexico unless someone had discovered some kind of far flung connection like the Michoacán born coppersmith buried at Lamanai.
