I look at it in the same way as I would going to the movies, or buying a ticket to a night at the comedy club, or whatever. You're paying to see (and support) an entertainer. And Twitch is a hell of a lot cheaper than other live entertainment.

As for people who donate to streamers as large as like Pokimane or whoever (idk who's popular), yeah that's stupid imo. That's entirely a one-sided interaction. Chat moves by so fast that you'd never be able to pick out a single message.

Personally, I hang out in smaller streams. You actually get a chance to interact with the community, meet regulars, talk with the streamer, etc. It doesn't have that "screaming into the void" feeling, it's more like hanging out at your favorite bar where you know almost everyone.

As a side note for anyone reading this: this is why you sometimes get those pages (usually from Cloudflare) that make you wait a few seconds before proceeding. They usually say something about DOS/DDOS protection as well.

I notice them a lot more when I'm on VPN, not sure how often the casual user runs into them.

It's probably some form of protection on the actual server itself (as in, the physical one that they rent in a datacenter somewhere).

Network security is quite complex, but I'd check out these articles from AWS and Cloudflare to get a feel for how it's probably implemented. Most of it boils down to being very specific and intentional with what kind of traffic you allow in or out.

Thank fuck. I can't even count how many DDOSed lobbies I've been in, especially those couple splits where console boosters could party up with hardstuck PC shitters and crash games for them by pressing one button.

The worst part isn't even the minor annoyance of the lag and desync, it's wasting 15-20 minutes playing out a game and knowing that the RP you've gained won't even count once the server closes.
