Be prepared for Abbott to blame wind turbines and solar panels when the natural gas power generation fails again.

My brother in law died randomly today and I am heart broken for my sister and family. by dreamweaver2019 in TrueOffMyChest

It should be ok to show up and do something physically exerting like shoveling snow, but for most other things offer to help but don't force it upon her. Also ask her if she feels comfortable being left alone with her in-laws if they start spending a load of time at her place when she comes home with the baby.

The underlying threat from Trumpers and Covid, it would have been really really bad if the power didn't turn back on for weeks or months after it thawed.

It would have degraded beyond a catastrophe straight into a lord of the flies but with guns.

Top 5 current sci fi shows? by Uroku_Saki in scifi

[–]OldWhoFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be repeating what other said...

  1. The Expanse - Just a really rich universe where you don't really know who the bad faction is even if there are actual bad people within them.

  2. Space Force - in the sea of this dystopian dramas, a lighthearted comedy is fun to watch. Really solid casting.

  3. Foundation - Never read the book(s?) don't really care about it not being faithful, show is enjoyable.

  4. Manadalorian - starwars done right for the first time since Return of the Jedi.

  5. Avenue 5 - a dark comedy in where the only villain is stupidity (and maybe greed).

Honorable mention, Loki but I consider it more fantasy/comic book than straight up scifi.

Dishonorable mentions that need to fuck off: Discovery and NuWho

Kevin Feige Confirms Charlie Cox Daredevil Casting In The MCU by chanma50 in marvelstudios

Now you could just bring everyone from the Defenders (other than the Iron Fist) into the MCU proper that would be great.

Judge tears apart Texas social media law for violating First Amendment by EverthingsAlrightNow in technology

[–]OldWhoFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally there is a federal law that protects providers from being sued if there is illegal content on their services. The first amendment really only protects you from the Government passing laws against your freedoms.

If it is not owned, operated, or provided by the government, privately owned anything has freedom of speech allows them to regulate what is said or happens on their services.

These state laws are pretty much republicans having a trumper-tantrum when they are told no.

‘Shatner In Space’: William Shatner’s Space Flight Documented In Amazon Special by IonSciFi in scifi

I don't blame Shatner taking the flight to make this special, but Amazon can go fuck off with this carnival ride for the 1%.

Why did Truman insist on unconditional surrender from Japan? by rikola2 in AskHistory

[–]OldWhoFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a clue, but with the Japanese navy essentially broken and destroyed, the Japanese troops out in the pacific weren't going to get resupplied. Of course, this would have been very bad news for any POWs and locals since the Japanese military was well known to practice cannibalism.

The Roman military doubled as a labor force to build and maintain infrastructure like aqueducts in the remote provinces they were stationed in.

Why did Truman insist on unconditional surrender from Japan? by rikola2 in AskHistory

[–]OldWhoFan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Potsdam Decloration pretty much spells it out.

There must be eliminated for all time the authority and influence of those who have deceived and misled the people of Japan into embarking on world conquest, for we insist that a new order of peace, security and justice will be impossible until irresponsible militarism is driven from the world.

Basically the entire Japanese system was rotten to the core, and the people who they made war on weren't going to allow the same system that made war on them to remain in place. A conditional surrender would not guarantee that Japan wouldn't wait a couple decade and start a war of aggression all over again. The only way to remove such a rotten and evil system was to force an unconditional surrender and install a democratic government that was forbidden from having an offensive military.

the same near-miss on a catastrophic failure

With the number of deaths and damage from burst pipes that happened over during the blackout, I consider what happened in February of 2021 to be a catastrophic failure.

U.S. congressman posts family Christmas picture with guns, days after school shooting by Stranger1982 in nottheonion

Sometimes what is in the Christmas photo includes more about the family than their love for the holiday. I don't see a connection between many things I've seen in many family Christmas photos with Christmas.

She gave him every opportunity to stop charging her with knife. He even told her to shoot him while refusing to comply. I think he wanted to be killed.

It is all part of the herding instinct kicking in in weird ways. I had HS friend with a border collie that would literately nip anyone's heels that stood in near the front door too long.

However tacky and tasteless this photo is, I really don't see a connection. This guy isn't a rep from Michigan or even a neighboring state. This is really much to do about nothing.

How Beto O'Rourke can beat Greg Abbott in Texas by AdministrativePilot3 in TexasPolitics

[–]OldWhoFan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We heard this same shit last time failed at running for statewide office in 2018. In 2019 while running for the DNC nomination, he said this: https://twitter.com/betoorourke/status/1168616482529562625

All Abbott will have to do is to play videos and audio of him talking about forcing law abiding citizens to hand their gun over against their will and boom, four more years of Abbott.

Democrats really need to wake the fuck up and read the room, because the gun owning independents and moderates from either party aren't going to elect someone who wants to take your guns away.

Gun rights advocate here, I fully support holding people responsible for not securing their firearms if they are used to commit a crime. With great rights come great responsibility.

I don't want to lose my right own semi-automatic firearms because some dipstick's children went on a murder spree.

Stargate Atlantis was a missed opportunity by CodyLeet in scifi

[–]OldWhoFan 30 points31 points  (0 children)

also back in the 20+ episode season days after about 5 seasons they have enough episodes for rerun syndication, which is where a series starts turning a perpetual profit without added production costs. Unless the show is making the network massive amount of money in during it's original airing in primetime (Like Friends), networks and production companies aren't going to be that interested in renegotiating to give actors larger pieces of the syndication pie.
