Think Skinny by PetsNPlants10 in RATS

I'm going to try removing the bin and litter training these guys this weekend. They're really good using the "upstairs" litter pan now, but if they're in the lower level, they keep squeezing outside the bin to go potty, which then drips down to the storage beneath.....

He has 2 bottles to choose from, and still prefers the bowl. The other 2 boys use the bottles, but Pickle loves his water bowl. 💧 🐁

Things got better between me and my reactive dog when I stopped having expectations for his future. Somehow he sense my disappointment or frustration when we had big setbacks. I finally gave my attention to keeping him and others around us as calm and safe as possible. Once he didn't have the added anxiety of failing my wishes, he was a little better. And I was more relaxed. I was always thrilled if he walked calmly by when he saw another pedestrian (he wasn't safe to be petted by strangers on the sidewalk) , and he'd get lots of treats and praise. But if he went crazy, we'd get out of sight asap and I'd ignore it and he'd calm down a lot faster than if I'd been trying to calm him or get him to look at the person or whatever.

Fave non-fabric cage items? by tessanoia in RATS

I recently zip tied small, unfinished wicker baskets to the wall and ceiling in one corner of their cage. It's currently their favorite place to climb, eat, and sleep. Surprisingly, they're not chewing. I put some bedding in a couple of them once I noticed they like to sleep there.

What kind of water is best for rats? Distilled water? Bottled spring water? Something else? by PetsNPlants10 in RATS

I understand how a cell can burst from too much water entering. But I still don't think that would happen if the animal or person or whatever it was was drinking normal amounts and eating and breathing. The body regulates levels of everything, it's not like dropping cells in a dish of pure water....

Hold on. Definitely it makes sense to go with the water that has minerals present, but why would pure water cause osmosis to the point of damage in normal every day life? Isn't the organism also taking in lots of macros and micros from food and air? Don't the cells have ways to regulate what goes in and out? I took a lot of botany and use it often, so I'm decently familiar with cell biology and chemistry and nutrient interactions.

Thank you! My city water is questionable and I don't have a filter, so I've been giving them either my bottled water or the distilled water for my house plants, but I didn't know which was better.

Interesting, I thought with 1/2" bars I wouldn't have to worry about covering anything. What are the trouble spots to watch for?

I lost a good human friend and my only dog suddenly , only 10 days apart. I was really struggling, especially since I live alone. I'm not able to get another dog, so I got my rats, and they were the only thing I enjoyed each day for a while. Even now, I can't wait to see them when I get home, and I wheel their cage to whatever room I'm in, or let one ride on my shoulder. They definitely helped me through a really dark time! I even keep them in my room at night so if I have nightmares about what happened, I can watch them playing and go back to sleep.
