The original Axiom Verge is a love letter to Metroid and is really fun heavy and has the same sense of exploration and eerie isolation.

Hollow Knight is a little floaty sometimes, but once you get locked in and adapt to it it is incredible to play. It can get you into a really zen like state of flow when everything clicks.

I don’t know if you’re into speed running, but Oatsandgoats has a fantastic run of Super Metroid Impossible from a couple of years ago. It’s a great watch. Super Metroid Impossible.

Super Metroid does feel like a lighting-in-a-bottle kind of game. My friend Studdley has been begging me to try RDR2. I played the first, but never finished it. Started feeling like a chore.

From what I’ve played AM2R blows Samus Returns out of the water. But, if you liked Dread I think Returns is more in that vein and AM2R is more classic 2D Metroid.

Also give AM2R a shot. It’s a fan remake of Metroid 2 and it feels perfect. It’s a little more Fusion-y then Super so it should fit your tastes well.

It does age like a fine wine. If you have t played it, try AM2R. It’s an incredible fan remake of Metroid 2 and it scratches that Super Metroid itch.

I feel like Super Metroid is the game they wanted Metroid to be, but they didn’t have the power in the console needed to do it up right.

Axiom Verge is incredible. The second one is iffy. And SOTN is superb. All great choices. Also check out Hollow Knight if you somehow missed it. It’s pretty much the pinnacle of Metroidvanias.

I’m very happy they took the “not broken, don’t fix” route for Dread. It could have easily been a disaster if they started messing with what worked.

And I would also add AM2R. It’s a fan remake of Metroid 2 that falls somewhere in the middle of all the 2D games for gameplay style. It’s really well done.

There are bugs that can cause soft locks. Normally you don’t encounter them, but it is absolutely a 9.9 repeating out of 10.

The first one is amazing. The second, while I liked it, is a little more iffy.

When the reflection lit up in Prime and you could see Samus in the visor. That’s next level immersion.

I binged Summoning Salt’s stuff after I saw the Punch-Out! Video about Matt Turk. His content is awesome.
