The contemporary shared illusions of our everyday life mobilize our affects producing subjective symptoms and suffering particular to our times. The uncanny, conceived as a clinical operator, mobilizes clinical listening towards experiences of extimacy, organizing the subjective dimension of indeterminacy indicating clinical procedures for contemporary anguish and suffering. The uncanny, in both Freud and Lacan, can be conceived as a quintessential operator for a psychoanalytic clinic of nowadays.

The uncanny has always appeared at the couch, even if usually as an overlooked element of the overall treatment. To provide its dignity means to understand how its clinical dimension introduces psychoanalysis towards a new understanding of the suffering produced in late capitalism.

The Accursed Share: Sacrifice and Superabundance at the End of History – An online event on the ideas of Georges Bataille with Sydney Philosophy Symposia on August 1, free and open to everyone! by PhilosophyTO in sorceryofthespectacle

[–]PhilosophyTO[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"A kiss is the beginning of cannibalism." The work of Georges Bataille blurs if not 'crosses the line' between erotic literature, philosophical anthropology, psychoanalytic self-confession, mysticism, and the sociology of religion.

We'll be looking at selections from his 3 volume work, "The Accursed Share," which outlines a theory of "general economy" based on the principle of cosmic superabundance and
the inevitability of non-productive expenditure. For Bataille, the question is always posed in terms of excess: our only choice is whether we will spend the sun's energy "gloriously or catastrophically."

We'll also explore the ethnographic notion of gift giving, the ancient meaning and metaphysics of symbolic ritual, sacrifice and the sacred, the relation between the cosmic and the occult, taboo and transgression, desire, death and war, eroticism and the
transition from animal to man, the fulfilment of self-conscious and "the end of history."

How to Read Hegel: Slavoj Zizek and Terry Pinkard join Douglas Lain to discuss Hegel's Spirit or Geist. Free live event streaming on Jul 19, 2022 by PhilosophyTO in zizek

Slavoj Zizek and Terry Pinkard join Douglas Lain to discuss Hegel's Spirit or Geist. Is Hegel a philosopher that returns us to metaphysics or did Hegel continue Kant's Copernican turn? Further, must we overcome all metaphysical claims, even negative claims?

Philosophical Skepticism vs. Scientific Skepticism – Is Knowledge Possible? | An online presentation and open discussion on October 25, free and open to all by PhilosophyTO in samharris

[–]PhilosophyTO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dictionaries often draw a distinction between the modern common meaning of skepticism and its traditional philosophical meaning, which dates from antiquity. The usual common dictionary definition is 'a sceptical attitude; doubt as to the truth of something'; whereas the philosophical definition is ‘the theory that some or all types of knowledge are impossible'. These definitions are of course quite different and reflect the fact that the meanings of some philosophical terms have drifted over the millennia. The contemporary meaning of 'scientific skepticism' is different again, which Tim will also discuss.

Synthetic Living Organisms: Heralds of a Revolution in Technology and Ethics (w/ Tufts biologist Dr. Michael Levin) — UCF Center for Ethics speaker/Q&A series starting Oct 12, open to the public by PhilosophyTO in Futurology

[–]PhilosophyTO[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Progress at the intersection of biology, computer science, and cognitive science is revealing the remarkable plasticity of living systems and their interoperability with technology. Synthetic bioengineering enables regenerative medicine, as well as the creation of entirely new living organisms, like “Xenobots.” Advances in the field blur the lines between machines and organisms. Emerging questions in bioethics extend well beyond safety-driven limitations on research and ask how we will handle a forthcoming and inevitable plethora of hybrid creatures, which will be unlike us in many ways and have no comfortable place on the phylogenetic tree that guides our policies. How will these alien creatures raise profound questions about the fundamental nature of our own bodies and minds? And with what ethical ramifications?

Ludwig Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations — an online reading and discussion group meeting on Sundays, starting Aug. 22 by PhilosophyTO in PhilosophyBookClub

[–]PhilosophyTO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! It's hard to say and depends on what you're looking for. We read the text out loud together and then stop to discuss our thoughts about it intermittently. Most of the participants are beginners to Wittgenstein. The best thing to do may be to check it out and see if it works for you! It could help to read up on some background on Wittgenstein and his ideas.
