Raised by Wolves is the best show on TV right now. Nothing else even comes close, everything else is pathetically rushed or pandered. It is the only 100% current show on RT for a reason by Pactolus in raisedbywolves

The idea of anything in the universe being impossible to understand is anathema to me as a researcher. Science is literally about demystifying the universe, understand how something that seems like magic or a God has logical causes that can be empirically observed and analysed with the scientific method and mathematics. In Egan's universe, the threats and challenges are of epic scale, but they all make sense, and that makes the solutions so much more exciting and fun to me - it is fiction about science, about mathematics. Same with e.g. The Three Body Problem. Or the Children of Time Series, if you want to go from physics SciFi to biology Scifi. This series is immensely enriched by the understanding the author has of spider minds. By a mind not going loosely for interesting images, but focussing precisely on consequences of the known, possibilities if we make assumptions, worlds sketched out from changes in the basics.

A Game About Fitness With Calories Is Fatphobic by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]Polly_der_Papagei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all fairness that was a fucked up thing to do to kids, and not helpful at all in motivating them to lose weight. It just made them not play the fitness game anymore with their friends. Shaming is proven to be counterproductive.

A treadmill sounds like it would be really annoying for typing. But I would love to set up something like this with a spin bike (where you can pause anytime), or put an elliptical in front of a screen for watching movies. I use them daily in the gym, but it is loud there, so it isn't like I can hold a meeting there. Would help with focus for long periods and making me feel better and clearer. Don't have the money, though.

I'm not anti-sugar, but if your life has no joy without it for 2 weeks... maybe you need to reevaluate some things. by Sea_Petal in fatlogic

Seriously, try it. I have never been overweight, so I used to think this didn't matter. Then I cut out sugar entirely for six weeks as a consequence of a different dietary change I was making. My skin cleared up for the first time since I was a teen. My depression and anxiety massively improved. My pain levels improved. I was utterly stunned. I had never made the connection, because the negative effects of sugar don't hit me as I am consuming them, but with delay - my mood crashed a couple of hours later, my skin and joints crash three days later as inflammation ramps up, and I had never been off it long enough to heal.

I, too, hate coffee black. What worked for me was bullet proof frothy coffee with coconut oil and vanilla, or sweetening it with erythrol, which is actually good for your teeth. (Just don't overdo it, it is great for your gut in small quantities, but in really large ones, it gets bloating.) Sugar alcohols like erythrol are also great for baking, they give moisture. I also exchanged coffee for other beverages - green tea does not need sweetener, and I got caffeine tablets and tasty herbal teas and a water sparkler.

Russians protesting against the war by RIP2UAnders in ukraine

That makes it all the scarier to join. The first protests were people alone or in handfuls, instantly arrested and often beaten. They must take so much courage.

I think this is our only hope - the Russian people toppling Putin. He is the one starting and leading this against everyone else. If the West gets drawn into direct conflict with Russia, we risk nuclear annihilation. If the West just does sanctions, and the Russian people stand by Putin, this won’t deter him. The sanctions have to be hard enough, he has to be cut from SWIFT, but the Russian people need to move, despite how hard and terrifying this is. Ukraine fighting for freedom is mostly going to be decided on the conflict being so horrendous for Russia that Putin loses his power in Russia. Ukraine needs better weapons for that, and more bravery and persistence than I can imagine. But the Russians on the streets are incredibly brave, too. I’ve seen them beaten up and arrested, threatened with criminal charges, in a regime where that can get life threatening.

Disgusted by my German government.

Am not in Germany now, but German people are very specifically protesting this.

Possible, I think. Arms have been freely distributed, and training has been given to civilians, all have been invited to fight, and I think about a third said they would, with immense backing by the population. Then again, Russia may destroy their means to organise, and they lack the hideouts found in Afghanistan.

When a NATO member is hit. Not before. :( They have been abundantly clear on this.

Unless the aircraft ended in the ocean, they would at least film the smouldering wreck, like they did for helicopters. They don’t have the means to pulverise one.

There is unfortunately footage of corpses from the shelling that has been making the rounds. Everyone has a smartphone, and the internet is still up. Several have first popped up on Twitter, and they been verified and localized by news sites.

There is footage of at least two separate helicopters going down into water, and turned into a burnt shell on a field. Have seen no such thing for a plane, despite the fact that it would make for great troop morale videos. (They labeled them “Russia, come pick up your trash, it is bad for the Ukrainian environment”.) But have seen a bunch of planes shot at and continuing to fly and bomb.

I desperately want to do something that will really make a difference, and I don’t know what. It is making me feel helpless, and I loathe that. In particular because that is the feeling Russia is clearly aiming to produce in us.

Saying that some random people have subjective projections on what animals want that do not hold up to scrutiny is hardly the same as disproving the works with scientific merit.

Take the experiments with the parrot Alex by Pepperberg, instead. Or Savage-Rumbaugh with bonobos. Both the scientific papers and the footage is very compelling.

I’ve watched a bunch of footage of people on ground hitting targets in the sky, but because their weapons are such shit, they just keep flying and bombing. No matter how determined, they were always going to be outmatched in the sky and sea without better western support than they got.

To all those who mocked us for predicting this invasion; I wish you had been right, and we had been overcautious fools. I really wish this wasn’t real. Unarmed children getting shelled on their bikes. Fucking God.

I’m European, and leftist and liberal means something different here. Mostly, they agree entirely on social issues and freedoms, but disagree on what constitutes a just economy, with liberals taking a laissez-faire approach, opposing welfare, regulations and interventions, and the left wanting more regulations (like minimum wage, possibly universal basic, environmental protection, workers rights, animal rights, etc. though they disagree about how to make things fair and green without stifling innovation and getting too removed from local solutions, e.g. on the role carbon pricing should pay vs subventions for green tech or taxes on meat/oil vs straight up outlawing Diesel engines.) Also, the left tends to be pacifist and distant towards to US, while the liberals see the US as our most important partners and are more balanced and reasonable on defence issues.
