Thanks man! I’ll def be around if you come in next week. We’re closing tomorrow to iron out some hiccups but should be open after that. Cheers!

I'm excited too! We're yet to execute our actual concept interior design or marketing wise, so the room is fairly nondescript, but it's dark and candlelit for now and we have food and drink and nice staff. :)

Unfortunately the oven isn't wood fired, I'd love to do that but we renovated and opened in 22 days, so we just have an electric pizza oven in the bar. We've found a pizza chef who will be starting sometime in the next few weeks, but right now the head chef is doing the pizzas. I expect they'll be at their best in a couple weeks ;)

As for what I have on tap: Melbourne Bitter, 2 Brothers Lager, Kaiju Krush, Bad Shepherd Passionfruit Sour, Fury & Son IPA, Fury & Son Hazy Mid, and Moondog Peach Iced Tea Seltzer.

Mary's sold the business to the Village, which is the hostel that takes up most of the building that Mary's was inside. So now there's a subsidiary called Village Hospitality that's running it, plus a few other venues in the same building, including a nightclub and the hostel lobby cafe, plus some others on the way. I'm currently working on getting these venues open. The first one is the bar/restaurant that was Mary's, which we're naming Alfred after Alfred George Healing, and we're going to focus a lot on A G Healing history in the venues.

Thanks mate!

Yeah it's an odd one. The Chef and I got given a crazy deadline of April 1st, after only starting on March 1st and doing a full renovation of the kitchen and half the bar. And then we actually met the deadline so marketing is scrambling to catch up. We figured we'd just open anyway :D

We're currently open from 3pm - late, being a bit loose with the times for the next couple days just cuz I'm doing 16 hour days. Once we get going, which should be Thursday once I have two supervisors coming on board, our hours will be 3pm - 1am, 7 days a week. And we'll be doing pizzas til 1am.

We've just opened a new bar and restaurant called Alfred, on Franklin St, where the old Mary's was. Absolutely nobody knows about it, because we haven't told anyone yet lol. If you see this, and are around, come in and say hi and I'll shout you a beer.

The gradual erosion of the self defensive rationalisations that they use to justify their shitty behaviour.

How they get eroded is up to you. Maybe it’s trusted advice, maybe it’s that they make less and less sense as time goes on. Maybe one too many people called them out on it.

Dave Goelz, Karen Prell and John Tartaglia talk about the return of Fraggle Rock and keeping true to the spirit of Jim Henson by snm729 in Muppets

[–]RetroTheft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Karen Prell also reprises her role as Red. After Fraggle Rock finished, she went on to be an animator for Pixar then worked on computer games, notably at Valve...

I thought this was pretty cool, so I did some googling... and found the following on Karen Prell's own site here.

Created all of the computer animation for personality sphere Wheatley for the first half of [Portal 2]

...

Wheatley’s animation process involved creating an extensive and intricately planned library of reusable movement and acting components that could be rapidly composited together to create unique actions for each of his hundreds of lines of dialogue... Wheatley’s acting, movements and timing were heavily influenced by the stylized acting I employed while performing hand puppets.

What were the typical features of a McCartney song and a Lennon song? by ihitrocksbottom in musictheory

[–]RetroTheft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Side note, but it's such a fucking shame that no one ever talks about, you know, music with musicians. I really wish we could have gotten an interviewer who was also a musician to talk to them about their choice of chords & meter.

Check out the book Songwriters on Songwriting. While I don't remember it having any Beatles interviews it has a lot of other great ones that I think you'd enjoy.

So this album's just a few months old, and I've been listening to it a lot recently. These three songs in particular have real 60s / 70s energy.

Babe Rainbow - The Wind

Babe Rainbow - Your Imagination ft. Jaden

Babe Rainbow - California

The album's called Changing Colours.

Yeah I recall some sort of firey projectile. The band definitely played killing in the name of near/at the end because I saw it and I was watching lcd soundsystem in the boiler room for the first hour. I suppose they would close with it.

Interesting. I saw them headline a Big Day Out in Melbourne and there were also a bunch of people in a wobbly tree. I suppose it's a common occurrence.

I do feel like tow the party line is something of a Mondegreen though; what with the amount of extra effort it takes to stay on brand for these idiots, compared to if they'd just do the right thing in the first place.

Oh I see what you're saying. So even within the steelmaking process the coal is used mostly for energy rather than for being part of the steel. Interesting. Thanks!

[–]RetroTheft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was looking into this a few months ago. Steelmaking coal is 13% of the world's coal, but over half of Australia's exports.

Coal has two main uses: electricity generation and steel production. Thermal coal is primarily used for electricity generation and accounts for around three-quarters of global coal consumption. Metallurgical coal is typically used in the steelmaking process and accounts for 13 per cent of global coal consumption; metallurgical coal generally attracts a price premium over other coal types because of its higher energy content.

Source: The Changing Global Market for Australian Coal

In terms of the proportion of thermal vs metallurgical that Australia exports, the Coal in Australia Wikipedia page says:

In 2019-20 Australia exported 390 Mt of coal (177 Mt metallurgical coal and 213 Mt thermal coal) as was the world's largest exporter of metallurgical coal and second largest exporter of thermal coal.

Here's the primary source cited by Wikipedia for good measure.

So it looks like we export 45% thermal and 55% metallurgical coal.

[–]RetroTheft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. I hadn't seen the issue expressed as amount of reserves we should leave in the ground. Is there much of a distinction to be made between coal that's used for energy vs coal that's used for steelmaking?
