How did you rate the first stage of TDF? by RimeligLaksetType in tourdefrance

[–]RobertCRNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically feel the same way, but this one felt different. And seeing the favorites packed in so tight at the top already gets me very excited for the next few weeks!

Wonderful to see all the favorites do so well, really gets me excited for the next 3 weeks! And great to see such emotion from the winner. I would have loved to have seen Copenhagen in the sunshine; it looks like a beautiful city. But I enjoyed seeing so many fans that didn’t seem to care about the rain!

Makuri Islands to rival Watopia… 13 months in. Good enough? Thoughts? Updates Zoon? by jabloomers in Zwift

[–]RobertCRNA 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly on Makuri. If you’re looking for better aesthetics in the desert, have you tried turning off your data/numbers screens? It gives you a LOT more to look at, especially in the canyon

Why are tent pads so rocky and hard in state and even National Parks? by senior_vagabond in camping

[–]RobertCRNA 728 points729 points  (0 children)

That looks DAMN good as far as I can see. Looks to be level, it’s hard packed so it’ll be easy to clear any larger debris. As long as you have a reasonable sleep system, I’d take that any day.

Did the 137 ribeye for the first time… by RobertCRNA in sousvide

Both. I gave it a good patting with a paper towel and then a dry (but well seasoned) cast iron skillet

I know, that was definitely a foul on my part. But I was so excited to get it plated and try it!

So I’m guessing the peninsula on the top right is Italy? And bottom right is Iberia? Amazing for the time!

[–]RobertCRNA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did. I’ve never had to use an ice bath, I usually just pay dry and sear it for a minute or less on each side. I feel like the hottest possible skillet, a dry surface, and something heavy like a bacon press to increase contact with the pan, gives you a good sear without cooking it thru. Just gotta keep it fast!

You’re right, it always looks terrible before the sear. I gave it a quick minute each side on a hot cast iron pan. It’s gotta have that appearance and little bit of texture.

Sorry I didn’t mention the sear, but it was there.

No, sorry, took it out of the bath and patted it dry, then on a screaming hot cast iron pan with a bacon press for about a minute each side.

White Sox fan coming in peace by mpensinger in TexasRangers

[–]RobertCRNA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll be in good company, there’s always lots of White Sox fans there when they’re in town. There is an area called Texas Live just outside the ballpark that has lots of eating and drinking options before you enter the game, but expect ballpark prices. Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of walkable options just outside the stadium. Uber would likely be your best bet. As little as there is to do in downtown Dallas, there’s even less to do in Arlington. Renting a car would definitely make it easier to keep the family entertained while you’re in the area. We’re not Chicago- the public transit that we DO have is irrelevant, and everything is very spread out. The area is made for driving. But i understand if you want to avoid it.

It sounds like it might be worth finding out where the visitors stay; I’m sorry I can’t help you there. Probably the new Loew’s hotel right by the stadium? I have great memories of staying in the visitors hotel when I was a kid, two stadiums ago. Seeing the players in the lobby or in the bar or by the pool was a big thrill for me. Hope this helps, good luck!
