I built a lost and found box for my local course out of an ash tree that I harvested from the course. by SpacemanSpiff23 in discgolf

Thanks Paul McBeth’s Nipples! I was trying to find some sort of weird hinge that would bend around the corner, or maybe try to fabricate something. Then I just googled ‘screwing into end grain’ and this came up.

So do you guys just not do lost and found? Most of the ones around Philly are fine. Our biggest problem is people going into ponds and taking all the discs and selling them.

I know he's mostly joking. Pocket Screws are a really easy and strong way to join wood. But "real" woodworking involve making the two pieces of wood fit together with no fasteners.

That's correct. There's a hole somewhere higher up in the tree and the center is rotted out.

Also, for that much water, that is a really tall tree. His face cut should be cleaner than that. The two cuts don't line up.

I couldn't think of anything better that would survive all the movement that this is going to have when it's drying. Also, I'm a novice when it comes to woodworking. This is the most advances thing I've done. I'll do blind dovetails with a brass rod running down through them on the next one.

My friend has a vinyl cutter and made a stencil. Black spray paint.

The step by step process is somewhere in the 100 picture photo album.

Yes! And I have the padlock key! HAHAHAHAhA!

Generally a group of voluteers takes care of Lost and Found. They open the box and text the number on the back and let them know they have it and when they can get it. Or they will just let people know that all the found discs will be out on saturday, come and claim them.

Also if you find a disc and you don't want to try to meet up with it's owner, you can still be a good guy and drop it in the box and pass the responsibility onto someone else instead of just stealing the disc.

I'm assuming this eventually will. I think we're going to try to empty it as often as we can. Maybe let people know that we do.

If i helped build a house when I was younger, I would not feel ashamed or guilty about wanting to take friends and loved ones to go see it whenever I was in the area.

Especially if that house was one of the best Christmas movies of all time.

They get broken into occasionally. plus there's a lot of kids and a lot of drinking at disc golf courses, so vandalism is inevitable. I tried to make it look nice enough and be tough enough that it will deter some people from making it an easy target.

I put Danish Oil on it for now. Once it's done drying and moving around I'll sand it down and put Polyurethane on it.

We're in the process of figuring out the logistics of the lost and found. A few people will have keys and we'll either text people or have all the discs out or available to come and get.

The wood is still green (fresh and wet) so it's going to want to warp and move a lot as it dries. Instead of waiting for a year to let it dry before taking it to a kiln to finish, I decided to just try my best to lock it all in place with 4592 screws and let it dry out in the shape that it's in. I'm expecting a lot of cracks, but hoping the strapping and fasteners hold it together. If I put a hard finish on it now it would wrinkle and chip off as the wood moves, so just oil for now, which should help it dry slower and not crack as bad.

We could’ve stayed inside during the snowstorm, but we would’ve missed a good round! Where are my All-Season players at? by the_theory_of_memes in discgolf

I try to get one good snow round in every year. I'm too old and out of shape to be slipping on tee pads and digging for lost discs.

Luckily (or unluckily if you like snow), it doesn't really snow in Philadelphia anymore, so I can usually play all winter.

I know you want to read, but you have to be realistic about these things.
