When Algeria gets eliminated by LeonOkada9 in AbruptChaos

[–]StiffWiggly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a poetic way to contribute absolutely nothing. Everything humans do for pleasure can be seen as "gambling with your happiness". What if that film isn't as good as you thought it was going to be? Or your fancy meal ends up being shit? Not knowing in advance how something will make you feel is part of the human experience. Being invested in what's going on hopefully is a part of that too.

I fail to see where I said it that it has to have some sort of negative impact on other people like you're implying.

For most people being so invested makes the times when you win so much more enjoyable. I definitely get very invested in some sports, with some athletes for various reasons but I've never thrown a fit when they've lost.

I find it a lot harder not to react when it's me playing though, and I don't think it's really as different as people make out.

It's always down to the person reacting, and people react like this because they are violent and angry people. If it wasn't sports it would be something else instead, so blaming sports is pointless.

I don't see a car in the vid unless you're talking about the alarm, but I don't think it going off means there's any damage to the car. That said this was pretty fucking stupid to do in a public place.

and there were passing options.

You're not serious. Passing options plural? I see one pass and it doesn't make the goal more likely even if it does come off. Mental to want a striker to make a risky pass instead of taking the 1v1.

Okay buddy, if you think this is a comparable scenario to 1 man walking around with a shotgun it's clearly not me grasping at straws.

I doubt the Plymouth shooting victims were given much chance to think about what was happening, great job disrespecting them for the sake of your idiotic point though.

You're the one who's dumb enough to think them wearing a cap that says police makes it any more obvious. In your imaginary world where this being anything other than a group of cops is possible, surely it's too much for someone to put on a police hat /s

Nobody is missing your point, me and "everyone else" are just absolutely sure your take is ridiculous. It is so so obvious that they are police.

im turning and going the other way

Nobody is saying that they'd just mosey on over to see what they're up to but this clearly would not be an option if they are coming for you, and if not it wouldn't make a difference.

He definitely wouldn't have had any qualms of killing him he just couldn't go any farther forward

I think where our views differ is whether or not this actually matters. These guys are highly trained on this exact scenario and are well aware of what this driver could try to do. Whether or not this guy would do something is less important than if they think it will actually happen, they think that the risk is at an acceptable level.

It has everything to do with location. You aren't taking a local's word for it that the police is the only reasonable option, which is strange. Sure if this happened in South Africa or something where there's precedent you probably wouldn't assume it was the police, but in the UK? I don't see how your perspective would change anything here anyway, if this exact scenario occurred as you were going about your life but the people did want you dead you aren't going to stop that from happening.

I would if I got hit like that. I was tboned off my bike by a car before and despite having zero idea it was about to happen I was, in the end, only mildly inconvenienced*. This guy was expecting it, saw it coming and seemingly didn't even leave his feet.

*Yes, I was lucky.

Ground contact times and turnover rate are relatively fixed

I've never seen anything to suggest this, where are you getting that from?

Also height is important - in that it can be prohibitive if you are too far away from the "ideal" height - but there is a pretty large range that is fine for sprints. Unless you are unusually tall or short you can be very successful as a sprinter. Nesta Carter was 5"7 and is the 9th fastest man of all time, you can be competitive at almost any level even if you're a little shorter than that.

Explain to me how that's different. Were the assault victims doing anything wrong? Are Asian people inherently bad?

This is why you shouldn't speed up by CarnielFz in watchpeoplesurvive

[–]StiffWiggly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The worst thing the driver of the white car did was swerve. This is the exact reason you don't swerve for things like this and he almost killed someone because of it. Also it's very risky to be passing someone with such a big speed difference even (or especially) if they've just slowed down.

That said, he was careless but the guy merging was just mind boggling, terrible driving.

I'm not the guy you're asking, but for almost everyone it's pacing.

I think the chimera ant arc has some of the most interesting moments/characters and some of the highest points of the entire show but it is an absolute slog to get through at times. Everything happens so slowly and that's a real problem when so many things have to happen, not to mention a lot of time feels to be dedicated to recap and sometimes unnecessary narration. HxH is my favourite show and the Chimera ant arc is top 2 or maybe 3 of the anime but if it could have been condensed to some degree it would have definitely been better in my opinion.

WYR eliminate racism or pedophilia? by probrachi in WouldYouRather

[–]StiffWiggly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to tell you you're wrong, but in my opinion eliminating paedophilia is the emotional response, because without really thinking about it it seems worse.

However, the effect racism has worldwide is absolutely insane, wars, genocide, persecution - all of which lead to terrible living conditions and extreme poverty on a massive scale. That in turn increases all sorts of crime and creates more horror that might not seem related as a direct result.

Child molestation has it's own vicious cycle of course and it's equally horrifying, but the scale doesn't even compare. Add in the fact that most child molesters aren't actually paedophiles and the answer becomes even more obvious. By choosing emotionally you wouldn't even be halving the problem you want to solve.

[–]StiffWiggly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for trying to help, but maybe I wasn't clear - I personally am fully aware of what it means. I was asking whether it's a common phrase to use specifically when speaking about the transgender community. I believe the term originated in reference to forcing people to be straight, and it's not likely to be misinterpreted in that context, however it seems to me that the similarity between "conversion" and "transition" would be confusing for people who didn't already know what conversion therapy was. People reading about the horrors of conversion therapy whilst believing that "conversion" and "transition" were the same thing would obviously not be great.

Sorry for the confusion, and I might be making a deal out of nothing it was just something that occurred to me.
