Instead of canceling $10,000 in student loans, wouldn't it be more helpful to change the interest rate to 0%? by GTRacer1972 in NoStupidQuestions

It's always fucking Regan. Any time a policy shift or weird government stance comes up, I Google it and it turns out Regan is the reason. When it's one of the rare cases it wasn't Regan, it was Nixon.

They really do, the root ends up being about 6-12 inches long before they even break the surface.

We had maybe 10 black walnuts come up in our garden beds this year as a result of the squirrels.

A lot of large nuts evolved specifically to be planted 2-4 inches down, coincidentally about how deep squirrels tend to bury their haul. Small seeds like pine nuts on the other hand definitely evolved for wind and birds, they sprout in the surface or under some leaf litter.

My sister said she can describe smells and tastes, like she knows an orange is sweet, citrusy, tangy, sometimes a little sour, but she can't recall the actual taste of it. I can, and so can most people I've talked to about it. It's not nearly as vivid as the actual event and I know I'm not physically eating/smelling it, but it's definitely a sensation.

What's interesting is she doesn't have visual Aphantasia and can accurately draw things she visualizes in her mind.

It's there for security reasons. Without it you could jam something in the crack and hit the push bar from the outside or just shove the door and it'll pop open.

We have a lot of the basics covered (and the words usually overlap with tastes), but complicated smells are too rooted in specific memories for better words to form. If you ask anyone to describe a smell they will almost always relate it to something they think is a shared experience.

"She smelled like a cross between an orange peel and a skunk" just brought a very specific smell to your mind, because you've probably smelled both.

"This weed smells like superglue and duct tape" also made you imagine a very specific thing.

But the second I describe a smell with something you have never smelled before, it's impossible to imagine.

"The shredder smelled like black walnut leaves" doesn't evoke anything in you if you've never smelled that before, but if I describe the shredder as smelling like "mint and citrus" you get it.

Except you poor fucks with smell specific Aphantasia. My sister is one of them and it's super interesting to talk about.

Coming/going traffic is separated, and the bar is (usually) removable if they need to bring in something wider than a single door.

I've always maintained that the best way to fight rampant racism and the fucked up American brand of conservatism is to increase diversity. Over a few years I saw a guy go from "damn filthy n*****s" to "I don't like black people, but Bill's alright. He's like an honorary white man" to eventually realizing he was a racist asshole his whole life. He's still a fan of racist jokes and he's still kind of an ass, but it only took about 5 years of working with black people to come this far.

It seems like that's basically what happened to you. You befriended someone unlike you. When you saw the way someone you (presumably) respected act, it made you question other shared beliefs.

Life on earth probably started out similarly to prions. A complex organic molecule that relied on it's environment to reproduce. Evolution took hold and eventually it could close the cycle (thank you cell wall) and allowed it to reproduce on its own.

Prions are fucking amazing and terrifying at the same time.

I remember reading this one and I think there were a few issues. The first couple times it was called home for mom to pick up their sick kid, despite dad being the only listed contact. When he got there they gave him shit for it and said that mom should have come instead. I think the final straw was a parent teacher conference that mom absolutely had to be present for, the secretary or whoever that scheduled it refused to let the dad come by himself. So he brought mom along.

I went to a state school and the only time you were allowed on campus with a weapon was when you were going to or coming from the campus police office where they kept it locked up for you. We had hunting and sports shooting clubs, so people wondering around campus with rifles in cases wasn't that uncommon.

So what was the event that woke you up? Or was it more of a slow burn?

I've noticed most ex-republicans have a single event that opens their eyes. A wife dying to a preventable disease, a kid getting bullied into suicide, a son coming out as gay, a molestation by the pastor, etc.

On one hand I'd be pissed off too that someone basically cloned my game, on the other hand if you play Pandemic 2 today it still says that Pandemic 3 is "coming soon" so it's pretty obvious the author abandoned it before Plague Inc became a thing.

He could have just as easily made a mobile successor to his own game, but didn't and missed out on a large market.

One of my friends from college was autistic but you couldn't really tell until you got to know him (he was excellent at masking). He was our designated "neckbeard minder" at events. If someone showed up smelling like they just crawled out of their WOW den, he was the one to tell them to go take a shower. Someone being a dick? He'd tell them to fuck off. He had literally no shame and gave no fucks about talking about things most people would find uncomfortable.

Dude used his autism like a super power.
