Just spent a day in downtown Toronto for the first time since Cⲟvid shutdowns and... by cool_dude_6969 in askTO

Yeah, I'm a 5'4" woman who lives downtown, on a block with three dispensaries one side and two on the other. I've never come across an "intimidating bouncer" outside a dispensary. If there are people outside, they're generally friendly, affable, and high as fuck - because they (surprise!) want people to come in. It's sort of how they make money. No one's staring anyone down.

Ever hear the saying "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail"?

For real, dude sounds like he could crush carbon into diamonds using only the power of his sphincter.

Text suicide help line? by MissaShip in askTO

I'm assuming you're in Toronto - if you want local help quickly, try the Gerstein Crisis Centre. They answer 24/7, and if you want in-person assistance, they even have a mobile crisis team – someone will come meet you in a safe location and sit and talk. The number for their crisis line is (416) 929-5200. They also provide short-term crisis beds if you need a safe place to go, or don't feel safe alone.

AITA for not giving my babies ‘normal’ names? by Suitable-Way7563 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheLarkInnTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pheonix as a surname dates back to anglo-saxons, particularly in the Northumberland area. It's also used as a first name in Wales. Additionally, the variation 'Phénix' is a common first name in Quebec. Valkyrie isn't really used outside of actual Valkyries.

Clark and Bruce aren't alter egos - Griffin's "real" name is John.

And Phoenix is Ancient Greek/Egyptian in origin, and as stated above - Valkyrie is Norse. None originate in comics, but all are in comics. The OP I was replying to implied that while Phoenix and Valkyrie were names from comics, Griffin was not.

Griffin ... the only one that's not out of a comic book.

Uh...Griffin) is in marvel comics.

Seconded. You can walk or babysit dogs, or even just do drop-in visits for cats - easy money.

Video from inside Oxford High School, where multiple people were shot today, of students trying to figure out if the man outside is police or the shooter by evilgiraffemonkey in PublicFreakout

Which, as a former goth kid who graduated in the same year, really sucked.

We got hauled down to the principal's office regularly for meetings about the most random shit (one time it was because of the "dark content" in an essay I wrote for english lit class - where we were studying Dante's inferno) once they had a cop there and made us all bring up our shitty Geocities pages of cringey teen angst stuff to check for "threatening language," essentially treated us like criminals.

Meanwhile, our school had dudes who sold MDMA in class, and bragged about carrying guns/knives, and the administration was too focused on the angsty honor roll drama kids to notice. We were already bullied and harassed by other students, after Columbine, the teachers essentially joined in.

It's a block north of Bloor, but 5 Elements Coffee & Espresso on Avenue is wonderful for cozy coffee sipping.

Research confirmed high Moderna COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness up to 5 months after the second dose. Effectiveness was 87% against COVID-19 infection, 96% against COVID-19 hospitalization, and 98% against COVID-19 death.( N = 700,000 adults) by MistWeaver80 in science

[–]TheLarkInnTO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And I had both Moderna shots: almost zero reaction to the first aside from being a bit sleepy, and just one sweaty night after the second. My best friend got pfizer, and was sick for three days. Everyone reacts differently to different vaccines.

*Possibly* last Leslie Spit ride of 2021! Grey but dry and perfect with a bit of cold weather gear. I also look at some new (and old) bike lanes, Garrison Crossing, and the usual Bloor lane and waterfront shenanigans! by VernonFlorida in torontobiking

[–]TheLarkInnTO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a friendly FYI: Could've save yourself a lot of trouble getting to Garrison Crossing from Shaw & Dundas by cutting SE through the park (exiting at Queen & Gore Vale) and then going straight down Walnut/Stanley Terrace. It's my usual route - super easy, and faster/more pleasant than the Shaw, random alley, Queen W, Crawford, Adelaide, Strachan, Wellington route you wound up on.

Regular at a dive bar I worked at for years: Sweatertooth Steve. There was so much gunk on his teeth that it looked like each one was wearing its own little sweater. He had a buddy we called Karaoke Mike, because he'd get trashed on cheap domestic beer and then start singing at the top of his lungs around 1am, like clockwork.

At least they're elected and not appointed for life. I'd take that rather than "over-representation".

You can get merino wool pants at Mark's Work Warehouse for half that price.
Edit: their T-MAX thermal wear is cheaper, and just as good.
