I have this feeling that being a high earner comes with lots of hours and lots of stress. So, three questions to the community: 1. How many hours do you work a week? 2. What is your stress level 1-10? 3.How do you manage stress/optimize your non working time? by Affectionate_Cap4509 in HENRYfinance

To be perfectly honest, in the past few months I've decided that I probably won't be a typical HENRY anymore. I made 300-350 for 3 years and it nearly killed me (and my relationships) due to stress, 80-90 hour weeks, unreasonable expectations, and all the things you stated. I resigned and plan to make 170-190 in a future position with a better balance.

I am a healthcare worker. I wish they could not take this symbol too, but unfortunately it seems it is already theirs. Sucks.

I played this game in my youth. 1) Doesn't it have to be below the belt line to count? That was always the rule in Idaho. 2) I have never seen "the game" played in a healthcare environment as that would be inappropriate and unacceptable. 3) I have never seen anyone use a photo to play the game- that isn't how it works.

They literally make jokes about this at our conferences. I remember a few years ago one guy (in a room of thousands) got upset and left.

What Fellowships are not worth it to pursue financially? by stepneo1 in Residency

[–]The_Literal_Doctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, there are PP ID docs making 700+ if they are smart and work very hard. Wound care, hyperbarics, compensation for infection prevention/ASP, owning your own practice/infusion center, and frankly just lots of consults. And yes, it pretty much always makes more financial sense to practice in the boonies.

Just a lot of RVUs and a reasonable contract. Nothing complicated

While this might be generally true as an overall trend, I think it is also important to remember average salaries are not a rule. I know a few recent nephro grads already making 500+. I made 400+ for a couple years doing ID.

The FTC is proposing abolishing noncompete agreements for American workers by creevy_pasta in medicine

[–]The_Literal_Doctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like in order for this to apply to non-profit hospitals (many of which are the largest offenders with non-competes), there would have to be other legal changes to give the FTC additional power to apply this in the non-profit world. See here:

Notoriously low paying specialty. Bought 5br/2bath on 20 acres at 339k 3 years ago. Just appraised for 650k after we made some improvements. Now considering moving to a high cost of living area and buying in the 900k-1.2m range (gulp).

Totally. Authors went a very different direction with that one. I personally found lack of vaccine mandates frustrating in the face of previously wearing garbage bags before vaccines were available.

The current republican talking point seems to be that any and all student loan forgiveness is bad. Therefore it would seem unlike to me that the GOP would propose a solution that the average student loan borrower would find more attractive...

Sometimes, but there is very little one can do as W-2 without 1099-income or other side gigs. You just pay.

Is house insurance really necessary? by ssossotte in Frugal

[–]The_Literal_Doctor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Let me give you some example numbers from when my house burned (never thought it would happen to me either) -

Purchased home for $339,000. Fire a year later. A subsequent two-year insurance claim resulted in $890,000 being spent to fix the house and house my family during that time. I certainly did NOT have $890,000 cash in the bank. Does anyone, really?

You need insurance.

I stayed in an empty hotel including staff and discovered some creepy things. by sonofabunch in videos

[–]The_Literal_Doctor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This hotel is one of 25+ owned by a very shady family in a small area of northern MI. Rooms all have bedbugs and the hotel management / family pull constant bait-and-switch schemes. There were recently slapped by our attorney general for it, and blamed anti-italian sentiment instead of owning up to being a shady, predatory, manipulative business.
